The Lexington Farmers' Market

May 9, 2012

Mother's day always brings a time communal family gatherings and reiterates the appreciation I have for those special women in my life.  However if you are anything like me Mother's day seems to sneak up every year and I'm left scrambling for a quick gift for mother dearest.

Don't let Mother's Day sneak up on you this year!  Bring Mom, Grandma, or any special lady in your life for a nice stroll through the market this weekend.  Don't forget to show her your appreciation with some fresh produce, cheese, homemade bread, a nice bouquet of flowers, or her favorite Farmers' Market merchandise.  If you still can't decided our gift certificates are a great solution.

Besides Mother's Day there will be a lot to offer downtown this weekend. BikeLex will be at market promoting bike month so grab your bicycle and get downtown!  Also don't forget to swing by Gratz Park for Mayfest and the Lexington History Museum for special lecture: "Lafayette in Lexington."

If the weekend proves to be too hectic don't forget about our newly open Tuesday/Thursday market up and running from 7am-4pm.

Saturday you'll find your favorite farmers set up with tables full of fresh, spring products at Cheapside Park from 7am-3pm. Follow us to Southland Drive on Sunday from 10am-2pm. Also remember that parking is FREE on Saturdays in the Financial Center garage across Main Street or anywhere on the streets in a designated spot.

Hope to see you at Market!

Here is a great recipe to bring to your favorite lady this Sunday!  Make it while you can before the fresh local Asparagus is all gone.

ASPARAGUS & RADISH SALAD

 Ingredients:

Directions:
  • 1. Fill a medium bowl with ice water and place by the stove. Bring 1 inch of water to a boil in a large saucepan fitted with a steamer basket.
  • 2. Thinly slice asparagus stalks on the diagonal, leaving the tips whole. Place in the steamer basket and steam until tender-crisp, about 1 minute. Transfer the asparagus to the ice water. Drain.
  • 3. Combine vinegar, soy sauce, canola oil, sesame oil, ginger and chile sauce (if using) in a large bowl. Add the asparagus, radishes and scallion; toss to combine. Serve warm or room temperature

HERE'S A BIT OF WHAT YOU'LL FIND AT THE MARKET THIS WEEK...

QUARLES DAYLILLIES AND FARM

Shelby County

Summer is rapidly approaching and the vegetables are progressing nicely.  Though we had some hail a few weeks ago it looks like everything is growing out of the damage.  We should have a nice selection of beets, asparagus, and buttercrunch Bibb lettuce this weekend.  The sugar snap peas are in full bloom and we're looking good for a bountiful crop.  Stay tuned for when they'll be ready.

This is Mother's Day weekend and it's a good time to let the Mom's in your life take it easy.  Fix her a nice meal and let her kick back for the day.  We'll have a selection of T-bones, ribeyes, New York strips, and top sirloins that can make the centerpiece of a elegant meal or a laid back backyard occasion.   There'll also be many other great cuts.  Come check out our white board at the market to see what's in our coolers.  We'll also have a good selection of cakes and breads to finish a meal or start a brunch.  There'll be jams, salsas, relishes, chutneys and pickles, including pickled beets and green tomato relish

Check out our website at quarlesfarm.com or visit our Facebook page at  http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/Quarlesfarm. We post some of our favorite recipes from time to time and you'll find a few pictures of what's going on during the season.

BLUE MOON FARM***Sustainably Grown***
Madison County

Don't you just love the first fresh SALADS of the spring?  Our MIXED LETTUCES and SPRING MIX (with spinach & kale) have been big sellers the past few weeks, and we'll have some more of that beautiful Nicholas County ARUGULA for you to mix in too.  GARLIC SCAPES to chop on your salad, or steam in with some yummy ASPARAGUS from Colcord farm in Bourbon County.  Top with garlicky CHAMPAGNE DRESSING made famous by the old Coach House Restaurant on South Broadway, and now made using our GARLIC!
GARLIC SCAPES are the flower stems of the garlic plants.  We should have enough for everybody this weekend!  We remove them to encourage bigger growth in the bulbs, and to eat!  They have a great garlicky taste and are super in a stir fry, sauteed in with some OYSTER or SHIITAKE MUSHROOMS from Bracken County, or grilled!  We use them to make our GARLIC SCAPE PESTO, which you can use as a quick and easy pasta topping, sandwich spread, vegetable dressing and much more.
We'll have lots of POTTED HERBS for your kitchen garden, and FRESH CUT CILANTRO for salsa or pesto right now!!  It will be a good week to buy your cilantro in bulk to make pesto.  Special price on pounds!  This week we'll bring some GROUND AJI AMARILLO, that golden fruity/hot pepper powder to heat up your sauces and soups, or to use in a rub with our GARLIC POWDER for beef, chicken or fish.  The Colcord Farm STEAK SALE continues!  30% OFF FILETS, RIBEYES, SIRLOINS and NY STRIPS.  It's grilling time!!  We'll also have GROUND BEEF and GROUND ROUND for you to make burgers, as well as pre-formed PATTIES.  For meatloaf lovers, we have GROUND PORK from Stone Cross Farm, and GROUND KY LAMB too, so try a combination for a really flavorful loaf.  Stone Cross supplies some of the finest Lexington restaurants, and they fill our freezer with the same quality PORK.....CHOPS, ROASTS, BACON, and not only BREAKFAST SAUSAGE, but EUROPEAN SAUSAGES too....ITALIAN, POLISH, CHORIZO, BRATS, HOTDOGS and ENGLISH BANGERS...all nitrate-free!
We have a great selection of KENNY's CHEESE from Barren County, and the perfect ARTISAN BREADS to make gourmet grilled cheese!  How about a thick slice of SOURDOUGH, topped with a couple of slices of Roland's red, ripe KY tomatoes and some BLEU GOUDA?
We'll help you with an uncomplicated Sunday brunch.......GARLIC BAGELS with some of Bleugrass Chevre's soft herbed goat cheese, or some beautiful PASTRIES (Cinnamon Buns, Croissants, Muffins) from Sunrise Bakery.
The weather for the weekend looks perfect for market!  Why not ask a friend who's not familiar with us to join you for the market experience?
Saturday, you'll find us behind the Lexington History Museum (the old courthouse) 7AM-2:30PM, and Sunday in the Goodyear parking lot on Southland Drive, 10AM-2PM.

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

Hillside Heritage Farm once again thanks all of our customers who came out on this past weekend.  The weather got better as the day went on and it turned out to be a pretty day.

The truck will be re-stocked with all of our delicious cuts of pork and sausages.  And yes,we have bacon!   Remember, all of our pork is raised by our family on our family farm in Garrard County.

The grand baby came to visit last weekend to see her uncle graduate from Berea College.  So it was an exciting time to hold such a little critter and then see that tall skinny boy walk across the stage to receive his diploma.  We are very proud of both of them.  Now Clay is dealing with what he will do with his life next.  He wants to teach agriculture, so any of you out there who can help him, please let us know.  Right now our emphasis is getting caught up on some of the work around here that I have been letting slide.

We will be at both the Saturday and Sunday markets this week, so look for our old Orange Box Truck to find some of the world's best pork.

We hope to see you all this coming weekend.

BLEUGRASS CHEVRE
FAYETTE/CLARK COUNTY

Come by for a taste of our newest creation, rounds of chvre covered with sweet-hot jalapeo pepper jelly.  These have been selling out quickly, but we'll double our supply this weekend.  Since so many of you mention using chvre for salads, we will have some already crumbled and ready to add.

If the weather stays warm and we don't have to don hats and mittens Saturday morning, we will launch our sorbet - dairy free strawberry rhubarb for sure, probably chocolate chvre and maybe a surprise or two.  We are still working on flavors, and you might say we have gone over the edge with ideas!  Look for the charming new logo that Cricket Press created for our  "Sorbet Cafe."  We guarantee it will make you smile.

Cheers,

Susan and the [email protected]

HENKLE'S HERBS AND HEIRLOOMS

Jessamine County

If knowing the origin of what you consume is important to you, as it should be, then we are the folks to shop with. EVERYTHING we offer is started from seed and grown by us just 15 miles away at our farm in Nicholasville. We opt to use biological controls and to release beneficial insects like lacewings and lady beetles instead of spraying with pesticides that kill honey bees and other beneficial predators to create a pest management system that is friendly to the food we bring to market as well as the environment.

Look for us and our big box truck at the corner of Short and Upper on Saturday and at Southland Drive on Sunday.  All of our offerings are sustainably grown, Kentucky Proud, 100% homegrown, and pesticide free. We will have the following:

-Heirloom and hybrid tomato transplants, multiple varieties

-Baby lettuce mix

-Large basil pots

-Fresh cut mint

We look forward to seeing you at the market!

PROPER PLANTS

Russ and Lyn Madison

We have lots to do in the greenhouses, so our trip to Farmer's Market on Saturday will be dependent on the weather.    We have herb plants, vegetable plants, annuals in several sizes and 5 sizes of hanging baskets.  We also have wonderful material to make up your own pots.  Remember, during this "iffy" weather, portable containers, (pots, hanging baskets, etc.) are a great way to get early color!  We have a huge selection of plants at the greenhouses on Military Pike in Lexington.  Check out our website
for directions, pricing, etc.  Come by and shop the greenhouses out of the weather.  "Like" us on Facebook for weekly specials to be used at Proper Plants.  Happy Spring and hope to see you either at Farmer's Market or at Proper Plants.

BOONE CREEK CREAMERY

HANDMADE ARTISAN CHEESE

Fayette County

Wow, are we excited about the opening of the Market and we're looking forward to seeing all of our old and new customers. We'll be downtown on Saturday and on Southland Drive on Sunday.

This week we will be introducing some new cheeses like our American Oak, a cheddar infused with oak barrel aged white wine and our Blackberry Serenade, an alpine Gruyere infused with blackberry wine. Delicious. You'll love our new Finnish Bread Cheese. When served warm, this Scandinavian delicacy is absolutely amazing.

And check out three of our cheeses that were recently in the World Cheese Championships.

-Kentucky Derby - A cheddar infused with Woodford Reserve to give this cheese a nice oaky finish.

-Sassy Redhead - An American style cheddar with whole peppercorns and red pepper flakes, then dusted with red paprika on the top to give it a distinctive "red head". Spicy, but not flaming hot, it leaves a nice glow in your mouth.

-Tuscan Sun - A taste of Italy with organic sun dried tomatoes and basil.

We also offer cheese making classes, supplies, and equipment. For details, call or visit our website. See you at the Market.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crpe emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon apptit!

GLEANING with Faith Feeds...

In 2011, Faith Feeds collected approximately 10,800 pounds of fresh food from our LFM members.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry. In total, the volunteers of Faith Feeds have collected over 68,000 pounds of food in 2011. Add to this total the 37,500 pounds collected in 2010 and you have a grand total of 105,000 pounds of food!

Over forty volunteers give of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.  Look for Faith Feeds at any of our given markets as they are hard at work harvesting for the hungry this summer!

If you are interested in participating in this unique ministry or you have a truck that you can make available from time to time, please contact Alexa at [email protected].

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
