The Lexington Farmers' Market

May 2, 2012

It is with great pleasure that I announce my first official e-newsletter with the Lexington Farmers' Market.  First I suppose I should start with a proper introduction of myself.  I am Whitney Fields and have been employed with the Market since September, however, I will be taking on the new responsibility of composing the weekly e-news.  Born and raised in Clark County with roots in Eastern Kentucky, small town farmers have always been at the forefront of my life. It was with great enthusiasm when I took a job with the market in September as I knew it was a great way to continue to support local farmers. Now I will continue to provide that enthusiasm with all of you by encouraging weekly visits to the market. With that being said Let's Talk Derby!

Everyone knows that the upcoming Derby day this Saturday is one of the iconic events our great state of Kentucky has to offer.  However, don't let all that Derby excitement get in the way of picking up all your wonderful local goodies.  In fact, what a great time to prepare an all local spread for those horse enthused friends. With Tuesday/Thursday market opening this week it is a perfect time to stock up and be prepared for the weekend. Tuesday/Thursday market is located at the corner of North Broadway and Maxwell and is up and running between the hours of 7am-4pm.

If you can't visit us on the weekdays, Saturday you'll find your favorite farmers set up with tables full of fresh, spring products at Cheapside Park from 7am-3pm.  Follow us to Southland Drive on Sunday from 10am-2pm and NOW OPEN: Tuesday and Thursday 7am-4pm at Broadway and Maxwell.  Every weekend you can visit our wonderful market members while you shop for your favorite vegetables, eggs, meats, cheeses, flowers, bedding and garden plants, honey, wine, baked goods, prepared foods, body care products, specialty items and more!
We'll also have LFM gift certificates and merchandise like tote bags, hats, shirts and aprons.  Also remember that parking is FREE on Saturdays in the Financial Center garage across Main Street or anywhere on the streets in a designated spot.

Here's a great recipe to bring to a Derby Party this Saturday. There is nothing better than fresh strawberries!

Strawberries with Rebecca Sauce

· 2 quarts fresh strawberries
· 1 pint sour cream
· ½ cup brown sugar
· 1 tablespoon vanilla
· 1 tablespoon dark rum, brandy or bourbon (bourbon makes a more Kentucky-tasting sauce)

Wash berries. Drain on paper towels. Place in a decorative bowl or basket. Combine sour cream, brown sugar, vanilla and rum or bourbon. Stir to mix well. Use as a dipping sauce for strawberries, or spoon it over any kind of fruit. Refrigerate until ready to use.

Makes about 3 cups sauce.

BLUE MOON FARM***Sustainably Grown***
Madison County

Our GARLIC SCAPES were our hottest seller last Saturday, while they lasted!  There will be more this week, Siberian and Belarus.  Get some of each and do a taste test!  You could be the only Derby party in town serving Garlic Scapes!!  :-)  They are so great steamed in with ASPARAGUS, and there should be lots of that this weekend too, from our friends at Colcord Farm in Paris.
We also sold out of our MIXED LETTUCES and SPRING MIX last weekend, but with this nice warm weather and some much, much needed rain this week, we'll have lots more for your Derby parties and dinner salads.  There will be ARUGULA from Nicholas Co. to eat alone or mix in, and our BABY GREEN GARLIC to chop on top.  We'll have some FRESH LEEKS too.
Colcord Farm has put some pre-formed GROUND BEEF PATTIES in our freezer.  They're great for singles, as you don't need to thaw the whole pound of ground beef to make one burger!  I can just taste one with sauteed BABY GREEN GARLIC and SHIITAKE or OYSTER MUSHROOMS on top, and maybe a little cheese melted over...we'll have all kinds of Kenny's KY MADE CHEESES...JACK, SWISS, CHEDDAR, GOUDA, BLEU and many more.
FRESH CUT CILANTRO!!!  Baby leaves so tender you can use them stem and all.  If you usually buy your cilantro at a supermarket, you owe it to yourself to try some that's really fresh.  The smell and flavor are far superior!  You'll never go back!  We make a cilantro pesto to use on pasta, chicken or fish.....outstanding!
The STEAK SALE continues!  We sell Colcord Farm GRASS FINISHED BEEF.  These animals have never eaten grain, only grass, as nature intended!  The steaks are RIBEYE, NY STRIP, SIRLOIN and FILET, and they are all 30% off the regular price.  In addition we'll have GROUND BEEF, GROUND ROUND, CHUCK and RUMP ROASTS, and the previously mentioned PATTIES.  We've got Bourbon Barrel Foods Worcestershire Sauce, Kentuckyaki or Bourbon Smoked PEPPER and PAPRIKA to season your beef when you're broiling or grilling.  Our market neighbor Roland will be back this week with the first Kentucky TOMATOES....hydroponics from Lee Co.  They're delicious and go great with steak and burgers, and make great salsa with the cilantro!
Stone Cross Farm makes wonderful HANDMADE SOAPS in 9 different varieties, as well as producing great PORK products.  We carry CHOPS, SAUSAGES of many kinds including nitrate-free hot dogs, BACON, ROASTS and more.
Have you tried one of our GARLIC BAGELS yet?  They come to us from Sunrise Bakery around 9AM, warm from the ovens.  Stop down in the pavilion and see Susan at Bluegrass Chevre for some soft goat cheese to spread on your bagel for a can't-be-beat breakfast!  There will be lots of other ARTISAN BREADS including HERB & CHEESE and GARLIC -TOPPED FOCACCIA.  For your sweet tooth, ARTISAN PASTRIES including CHOCOLATE CROISSANTS, CINNAMON ROLLS and yummy MUFFINS.
Are you planting an herb garden this year?  We have lots of HERB SETS to fill it up!  The smells are wonderful!  Stop by to pinch and sniff!
You can find us behind the old courthouse/Lexington History Museum on Short Street from 7 until around 2:30, and on Sunday we're on Southland Drive in front of Goodyear from 10-2.

Hillside Heritage Farm

Garrard County

Hillside Heritage Farm once again thanks all of our customers who came out on this past weekend.

The truck will be re-stocked with all of our delicious cuts of pork and sausages.  We had bacon at Boone's which I will be picking up later this week - so don't despair there should be plenty of bacon!  Remember, all of our pork is raised by our family on our family farm in Garrard County.

This is an exciting time around the farm.  The turnips, rape and clover that we planted about a 6 weeks ago is up and growing with the recent rain.  The piglets are everywhere, getting in to everything.  There is no way on a pasture based hog farm to keep baby pigs in.

We will be at the Saturday market and hope tom see you all there.  This weekwe will not be at the Sunday market!  Clay is garduating from Berea College on Sunday and we cannot not miss this historic day.

We hope to see you all this coming weekend.

Proper Plants

Russ and Lyn Madison

We have lots to do in the greenhouses, so our trip to Farmer's Market on Saturday will be dependent on the weather.    We have herb plants, vegetable plants, annuals in several sizes and 5 sizes of hanging baskets.  We also have wonderful material to make up your own pots.  Remember, during this "iffy" weather, portable containers, (pots, hanging baskets, etc.) are a great way to get early color!  We have a huge selection of plants at the greenhouses on Military Pike in Lexington.  Check out our website
for directions, pricing, etc.  Come by and shop the greenhouses out of the weather.  "Like" us on Facebook for weekly specials to be used at Proper Plants.  Happy Spring and hope to see you either at Farmer's Market or at Proper Plants.

Boone Creek Creamery

Handmade Artisan Cheese

Fayette County

Wow, are we excited about the opening of the Market and we're looking forward to seeing all of our old and new customers. We'll be downtown on Saturday and on Southland Drive on Sunday.

This week we will be introducing some new cheeses like our American Oak, a cheddar infused with oak barrel aged white wine and our Blackberry Serenade, an alpine Gruyere infused with blackberry wine. Delicious. You'll love our new Finnish Bread Cheese. When served warm, this Scandinavian delicacy is absolutely amazing.

And check out three of our cheeses that were recently in the World Cheese Championships.

-Kentucky Derby - A cheddar infused with Woodford Reserve to give this cheese a nice oaky finish.

-Sassy Redhead - An American style cheddar with whole peppercorns and red pepper flakes, then dusted with red paprika on the top to give it a distinctive "red head". Spicy, but not flaming hot, it leaves a nice glow in your mouth.

-Tuscan Sun - A taste of Italy with organic sun dried tomatoes and basil.

We also offer cheese making classes, supplies, and equipment. For details, call or visit our website. See you at the Market.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!

GLEANING with Faith Feeds...

In 2011, Faith Feeds collected approximately 10,800 pounds of fresh food from our LFM members.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry. In total, the volunteers of Faith Feeds have collected over 68,000 pounds of food in 2011. Add to this total the 37,500 pounds collected in 2010 and you have a grand total of 105,000 pounds of food!

Over forty volunteers give of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.  Look for Faith Feeds at any of our given markets as they are hard at work harvesting for the hungry this summer!

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
