The Lexington Farmers' Market

April 25, 2012

Saturday you'll find your favorite farmers set up with tables full of fresh, spring products at Cheapside Park from 7am-3pm.  Follow us to Southland Drive on Sunday from 10am-2pm!  Every weekend you can visit our wonderful market members while you shop for your favorite vegetables, eggs, meats, cheeses, flowers, bedding and garden plants, honey, wine, baked goods, prepared foods, body care products, specialty items and more! We'll also have LFM gift certificates and merchandise like tote bags, hats, shirts and aprons.  Also remember that parking is FREE on Saturdays in the Financial Center garage across Main Street or anywhere on the streets in a designated spot.

It is with a heavy heart that I announce this is one of my last e-newsletters and my last few weeks with the LFM.  I have accepted a position with the Community Farm Alliance, an organization based in Frankfort, KY dedicated to building positive relationships between farmers, consumers, legislators and communities by organizing leadership and bringing a critical public voice to policy makers.  I am excited to take the next step on my career path while still working with small Kentucky farmers, but it has been difficult to say my goodbyes to my friends at the LFM.  Over the year that I've worked at the market I have made countless acquaintances, professional relationships and, of course, dear friends. It has been such a pleasure and an honor to work with each of the 70+ LFM market members, their families and employees, Jeff and Whitney, and with the thousands of customers and community members that I've gotten to know so well. Few jobs can offer such a unique way to interact with so many people and I consider myself lucky to have had such an opportunity.  This all being said, I will still be living in Lexington's East End and will be a frequent customer at the LFM and hope to see and visit with many familiar faces from the other side of the table.

In closing, I'd like to thank you all for your words of encouragement, suggestions and overall support of the LFM.  We are so blessed as Kentuckians to have access to such a vibrant (and delicious) agricultural community.

Here's an article published in the NY Times yesterday, entitled Wendell Berry, American Hero, which struggles with two main questions about America's current food landscape: "How are we going to change this?" and "What can city people do?". Wendell's answers are inspiring and can remind us that we all eat and all have a place in the food system. As "city people" of Lexington, we can play a critical role in changing all of this by shopping at the Lexington Farmers' Market and helping the "country people" earn a living wage, preserve farmland and keep the growing of local foods alive.

HERE'S A BIT OF WHAT YOU'LL FIND AT THE MARKET THIS WEEK...

Henkle's Herbs and Heirlooms

Jessamine County

If knowing the origin of what you consume is important to you, as it should be, then we are the folks to shop with. EVERYTHING we offer is started from seed and grown by us just 15 miles away at our farm in Nicholasville. We opt to use biological controls and to release beneficial insects like lacewings and lady beetles instead of spraying with pesticides that kill honey bees and other beneficial predators to create a pest management system that is friendly to the food we bring to market as well as the environment.

Look for us and our big box truck at the corner of Short and Upper on Saturday and at Southland Drive on Sunday.  All of our offerings are sustainably grown, Kentucky Proud, 100% homegrown, and pesticide free. We will have the following:

-Heirloom and hybrid tomato transplants, multiple varieties

-Baby lettuce mix

-Large basil pots

-Fresh cut mint

We look forward to seeing you at the market!

Hillside Heritage Farm

Garrard County

Hillside Heritage Farm once again thanks all of our customers who came out on this past weekend.  The weather was terrible - it took a dedicated customer to appear in such weather.

The truck will be re-stocked with all of our delicious cuts of pork and sausages.  And yes, even though we sold out Saturday, we still had bacon at home to put on the truck for this weekend!   Remember, all of our pork is raised by our family on our family farm in Garrard County.

This is an exciting time around the farm.  The ground is ready for planting corn and the rains we are getting were much needed - so once it drays we will be getting the corn in the ground.  The turnips, rape and clover that we planted about a month ago on their winter lots is up and already showing signs of growth after last weekends rain.  This past week, Hannah and I were greeted with two more new litters.  Now there are 32 new baby piglets running all around and climbing all over mom every time she lays down.  Several more litters will be arriving in the next few weeks.

Well, the grand baby finally got here last Wednesday evening.  Seven pounds and nine ounces of little girl - momma and baby are doing well.   Clay is planning on being at the Saturday market.  Most of his college work is done except for final exams next week.  He graduates May 6 with his bachelor's degree in Agriculture.  I suppose now he will come home and tell his Old Man all the things I have been doing wrong over the years.  Actually, we have made many changes while he was in school, adopting things he had learned.  We are very proud of him - not many graduate in 4 years anymore.

We hope to see you all this coming weekend.  We'll probably even have pictures of the grand baby to share!

Proper Plants

Russ and Lyn Madison

We have lots to do in the greenhouses, so our trip to Farmer's Market on Saturday will be dependent on the weather.    We have herb plants, vegetable plants, annuals in several sizes and 5 sizes of hanging baskets.  We also have wonderful material to make up your own pots.  Remember, during this "iffy" weather, portable containers, (pots, hanging baskets, etc.) are a great way to get early color!  We have a huge selection of plants at the greenhouses on Military Pike in Lexington.  Check out our website
for directions, pricing, etc.  Come by and shop the greenhouses out of the weather.  "Like" us on Facebook for weekly specials to be used at Proper Plants.  Happy Spring and hope to see you either at Farmer's Market or at Proper Plants.

Boone Creek Creamery

Handmade Artisan Cheese

Fayette County

Wow, are we excited about the opening of the Market and we're looking forward to seeing all of our old and new customers. We'll be downtown on Saturday and on Southland Drive on Sunday.

This week we will be introducing some new cheeses like our American Oak, a cheddar infused with oak barrel aged white wine and our Blackberry Serenade, an alpine Gruyere infused with blackberry wine. Delicious. You'll love our new Finnish Bread Cheese. When served warm, this Scandinavian delicacy is absolutely amazing.

And check out three of our cheeses that were recently in the World Cheese Championships.

-Kentucky Derby - A cheddar infused with Woodford Reserve to give this cheese a nice oaky finish.

-Sassy Redhead - An American style cheddar with whole peppercorns and red pepper flakes, then dusted with red paprika on the top to give it a distinctive "red head". Spicy, but not flaming hot, it leaves a nice glow in your mouth.

-Tuscan Sun - A taste of Italy with organic sun dried tomatoes and basil.

We also offer cheese making classes, supplies, and equipment. For details, call or visit our website. See you at the Market.

ABIGAIL'S
Fayette County

I will be at the LFM on Saturday.  On Sunday, I will be at Morris Book Shop to sign my new book, Death By Bridle, from 1pm to 3pm.  After you shop at the Southland Market on Sunday, come by Morris's  in Chevy Chase and see me.  Just a note - Death By A HoneyBee was on Kindle's top 100 books for Women Literature and Women Sleuths in March.  Now let's talk about good things to purchase at the Market.

HONEY  - Have a mild Wildflower Honey.  It's a pretty yellow honey and mild to the palate.  I have it in  1 lb, 8 oz, and baby bears which are so cute.

BALMS - Lavender, Honeysuckle and Honey Natural Hand Balms plus Peppermint Foot Balm and Lavender in cute tins.

LIP BALMS - Yummy lip balms - Peppermint, Honey Natural, Mango Bango and Orange Dream

POST CARDS - My husband says he is going to have new post cards ready for Saturday but I am keeping my fingers crossed.  He still has a lot of yard work to do first, but stop by and see.  He might surprise me.

I love it when the Lexington Farmers' Market opens and all the fresh vegetables are on the tables alongside the breads, cheeses, and flowers.  I can't wait for the strawberries which  I put on ice cream and then pour honey over it.  Great dessert.

I spent two hours on Thursday getting a bee swarm down from a tree.  It must have had 30,000 bees.  I put them in a new hive body with food.  The next morning I go back to check on them and they have flown the coup, so to speak.  I thought that was downright rude of them after all the trouble I went to on their behalf.

QUARLES DAYLILLIES AND FARM

Shelby County

Spring garden is coming right along.  The lettuce, onions, beets, carrots and peas are growing and the potatoes got planted this past weekend,.  Swiss chard and spinach is coming up and the greenhouse is full of pepper and tomato transplants. New babies are being born in the fields and Momma cows are keeping watch over newborns slumbering in the warm spring sun.

It's not long until we'll be back outside at the pavillion.  April 14th to be exact.  It'll be a big weekend with the Sunday Southland market starting along with the the Lexington Home and Garden Show which will run from Thurday through Sunday of the same weekend.  We'll be at all three places.  Come see us.  Until then we'll have one more weekend at Victorian Square.  Hopefully we'll have a little more kale.  It's trying real hard to bolt and doing a fine job.  Yellow flowers are popping out from the kale and turnips and it'll soon be mowed off and plowed under.

We'll have our coolers full of beef this weekend.  If you find that ham isn't high on your list for the Easter meal, consider a choice ribeye or New York strip steak.  This year it's been warm enough you could actually consider a cook out for Easter and have a great family time with weiners, hamburgers and brats.  We'll have all those and other cuts with us Saturday along with our tasty cakes and breads.  A carrot apple cake with creamy buttercream icing is a perfect end to any meal.  Many of our breads make a fine beginning for an Easter breakfast or brunch.  We'll also have our salsas, relishes, chutneys, jams and jellies.

We certainly appreciate all of our loyal customers that have continued to visit us this winter at Victorian  Square.  You are wonderful folks and we are enjoying the opportunity to get to know you better.  We encourage other market customers to visit the market next winter.  You may be surprised at the variety of products that are available!

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crpe emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon apptit!

GLEANING with Faith Feeds...

In 2011, Faith Feeds collected approximately 10,800 pounds of fresh food from our LFM members.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry. In total, the volunteers of Faith Feeds have collected over 68,000 pounds of food in 2011. Add to this total the 37,500 pounds collected in 2010 and you have a grand total of 105,000 pounds of food!

Over forty volunteers give of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.  Look for Faith Feeds at any of our given markets as they are hard at work harvesting for the hungry this summer!

If you are interested in participating in this unique ministry or you have a truck that you can make available from time to time, please contact Alexa at [email protected].

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
