The Lexington Farmers' Market

April 18, 2012

Thanks to everyone who helped make our 2012 opening weekend the best ever! We were delighted to hear that many of our vendors had record sales over the weekend.

This Saturday you'll find your favorite farmers set up with tables full of fresh, spring products at Cheapside Park from 7am-3pm.  Follow us to Southland Drive on Sunday from 10am-2pm!  Every weekend you can visit our wonderful market members and catch up with all that's happened over the winter while you shop for your favorite vegetables, eggs, meats, cheeses, flowers, bedding and garden plants, honey, wine, body care products, baked goods, prepared foods, specialty items and more!

Also this weekend, students in the UK College of Arts & Sciences will be recording oral histories and scanning photos, posters, and any other memorabilia from Lexington Farmers Market supporters. Drop by the mar
ket on either day to share your memories or your memorabilia with student oral historians. Help preserve the community's memories of the Lexington Farmers Market.

This oral history project was launched in February, when the first round of oral histories were held at the Victorian Square Saturday market. The interviews and some scanned images can be found on the Digital Distillery, which is an online public humanities project from Arts & Science faculty. You can see the full list of interviews from February here: https://digitaldistillery.as.uky.edu/distillery-project-podcasts/2757

Lexington's annual Earthdays in the Bluegrass Celebration is hitting the ground running all throughout the month of April.  Earth Week is officially next week and what better way is there to celebrate the land we're living on than to eat local food?  You can check out all of their events here to find out how you can get involved--or better yet, vote with your fork and try to eat local all week long!

Here's a delicious recipe from a local Kentucky food blogger and looks similar to what Chef Alex from Good Foods Market and Cafe was cooking up at market on Sunday!  You can find almost all ingredients at the LFM!

Herbed Quinoa and White Beans

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups quinoa
  • 2 cups water or vegetable stock
  • ¼ cup olive oil + 1 tbsp
  • juice 2 lemons + zest of 1
  • ¾ cup chopped basil
  • ¼ cup chopped parsley
  • 1 tbsp fresh thyme
  • 1 bunch asparagus
  • 1 small red onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 large can white beans
  • celtic sea salt
  • pepper
  • white balsamic

Directions:

Bring water to a boil and add quinoa, reduce heat and simmer 10-15 minutes until water has been absorbed. In the meantime sauté red onion in 1 tbsp olive oil and a pinch of salt, about 2 minutes until they begin to tenderize. Add in asparagus, and garlic and cook another 5-6 minutes until softened, stir in drained and rinsed beans and cook until heated through. Check on quinoa after about 10 minutes and if water is mostly evaporated turn off heat and let sit about 5-8 more minutes. To prepare dressing whisk together lemon juice, olive oil, and lemon zest, stir in fresh herbs and salt to taste. Add fluffed quinoa and bean mixture, toss to combine and top with a drizzle of white balsamic, black pepper, and celtic salt. Serve room temperature, warm, or chilled!

BLUE MOON FARM***Sustainably Grown***
Madison County

Thanks, everybody, for making our opening weekend such a success!  We had a blast seeing you all after so long, and catching up on all the news from your winter!  Your enthusiasm for the market was inspiring and gratifying!
It sounds like a lot of you are already planting your herb gardens, and while it's still a little risky for basil to go in, many of our other HERB SET offerings will tolerate the cooler temperatures just fine.  We have a nice selection of varieties including thyme, sage, oregano, 3 mints (spearmint, orange , and chocolate) stevia, tarragon, rosemary, lavender and more.  Come on down and browse and sniff!
We are hoping for a good batch of ASPARAGUS this week from Colcord Farm in Bourbon County, which is wonderful with some of our GARLIC SCAPE PESTO drizzled on top!   We'll have some more of the lovely MIXED LETTUCES from Carlisle.  Chop some of our own BABY GREEN GARLIC into your salads, maybe some fresh OYSTER MUSHROOMS from Bracken Co., and top with the local favorite, CHAMPAGNE DRESSING from the Stanley Demos' recipe developed for the Coach House Restaurant many years ago.
Did you know we're having a STEAK SALE?  Colcord Farm's GRASS FINISHED BEEF is loaded with Omega 3 fatty acids and even more good taste!  We'll have SIRLOIN, RIBEYE, NY STRIP and FILETS on sale for 30% off.  Time to stock your freezer!  We have local KY LAMB too!  GROUND (makes yummy meatballs!)  and STEW MEAT, which is great for shish kabob
So many of you were thrilled to find our LEEKS last week, and we'll have more this week!  Saute them up with some BABY GREEN GARLIC and SHIITAKE MUSHROOMS to top your steak or BURGER!
Stone Cross Farm provides us with all kinds of wonderful PORK products, from CHOPS, to BACON, ROASTS, SAUSAGES of all kinds, and even nitrite-free HOT DOGS!
The "Cup O Joe"  CHEESE from Kenny's Farmhouse Cheese was a hit, and a surprise to many!  A cheese soaked in coffee?  It doesn't really taste like coffee, but just has a little something extra, and is really good!!  We'll have more of it and many other varieties this week.
Homemade SOAPS from Stone Cross Farm, Bourbon Barrel Foods terrific SOY, WORCESTERSHIRE, and KENTUCKYAKI  SAUCES, and Bourbon Smoked CRACKED PEPPER, and PAPRIKA to season your meals.
BLACKBERRY MUFFINS, huge CINNAMON ROLLS, CROISSANTS, and PAIN AU CHOCOLAT from Sunrise Bakery for your Sunday brunch, and GARLIC BAGELS to smear with goat cheese or cream cheese!  All kinds of ARTISAN BREADS, including FOCACCIA topped with our GARLIC, 8-GRAIN BREAD with our HERBS, SOURDOUGH, and more.
Remember, the market goes on rain or shine, so bring a friend and come on down!  We'll see you there!

Hillside Heritage Farm

Garrard County

Hillside Heritage Farm thanks all of our customers who came out on this past weekend.  We had our most successful Saturday ever.  Dorthy and I made over 100 trips in and out of the old orange box truck gathering pork.

This week we will be getting back reports from those who were brave enough to try our new "Polish Sausage."  Of course, it's made with our heritage breeds, pasture raised, ASH Free pork - so it's bound to be good!  The truck will be re-stocked with all of our delicious cuts of pork and sausages.  And yes, even though we sold out Saturday, we still had bacon at home to put on the truck for this weekend!   Remember, all of our pork is raised by our family on our family farm in Garrard County.

This is an exciting time around the farm.  We are about ready to plant corn to hog down this fall.  There's nothing more exciting than to turn a bunch of hungry hogs into a corn patch!  It's a lot like the mall on "Black Friday" - a lot of squealing, pushing and racing about to get to all the goodies.  The turnips, rape and clover that we planted about a month ago on their winter lots is up and would benefit from a rain.  Yesterday, Hannah and I were greeted with two new litters.  Fifteen new baby piglets running all around and climbing all over mom every time she lays down.

Dorthy and I are about to become grandparents for the first time - hopefully this week.  Maria's daughter was due last Tuesday - so surely the little booger will get here this week.  Clay hasn't been at the Saturday market yet because he is finishing up at Berea College.  He graduates May 6 with his bachelor's degree in Agriculture.  I suppose now he will come home and tell his Old Man all the things I have been doing wrong over the years.  Actually, we have made many changes while he was in school, adopting things he had learned.  We are very proud of him - not many graduate in 4 years anymore.

We hope to see you all this coming weekend.  We'll probably even have pictures of the grand baby to share!

Proper Plants

Russ and Lyn Madison

We have lots to do in the greenhouses, so our trip to Farmer's Market on Saturday will be dependent on the weather.    We have herb plants, vegetable plants, annuals in several sizes and 5 sizes of hanging baskets.  We also have wonderful material to make up your own pots.  Remember, during this "iffy" weather, portable containers, (pots, hanging baskets, etc.) are a great way to get early color!  We have a huge selection of plants at the greenhouses on Military Pike in Lexington.  Check out our website
for directions, pricing, etc.  Come by and shop the greenhouses out of the weather.  "Like" us on Facebook for weekly specials to be used at Proper Plants.  Happy Spring and hope to see you either at Farmer's Market or at Proper Plants.

Boone Creek Creamery

Handmade Artisan Cheese

Fayette County

Wow, are we excited about the opening of the Market and we're looking forward to seeing all of our old and new customers. We'll be downtown on Saturday and on Southland Drive on Sunday.

This week we will be introducing some new cheeses like our American Oak, a cheddar infused with oak barrel aged white wine and our Blackberry Serenade, an alpine Gruyere infused with blackberry wine. Delicious. You'll love our new Finnish Bread Cheese. When served warm, this Scandinavian delicacy is absolutely amazing.

And check out three of our cheeses that were recently in the World Cheese Championships.

-Kentucky Derby - A cheddar infused with Woodford Reserve to give this cheese a nice oaky finish.

-Sassy Redhead - An American style cheddar with whole peppercorns and red pepper flakes, then dusted with red paprika on the top to give it a distinctive "red head". Spicy, but not flaming hot, it leaves a nice glow in your mouth.

-Tuscan Sun - A taste of Italy with organic sun dried tomatoes and basil.

We also offer cheese making classes, supplies, and equipment. For details, call or visit our website. See you at the Market.

QUARLES DAYLILLIES AND FARM

Shelby County

Spring garden is coming right along.  The lettuce, onions, beets, carrots and peas are growing and the potatoes got planted this past weekend,.  Swiss chard and spinach is coming up and the greenhouse is full of pepper and tomato transplants. New babies are being born in the fields and Momma cows are keeping watch over newborns slumbering in the warm spring sun.

It's not long until we'll be back outside at the pavillion.  April 14th to be exact.  It'll be a big weekend with the Sunday Southland market starting along with the the Lexington Home and Garden Show which will run from Thurday through Sunday of the same weekend.  We'll be at all three places.  Come see us.  Until then we'll have one more weekend at Victorian Square.  Hopefully we'll have a little more kale.  It's trying real hard to bolt and doing a fine job.  Yellow flowers are popping out from the kale and turnips and it'll soon be mowed off and plowed under.

We'll have our coolers full of beef this weekend.  If you find that ham isn't high on your list for the Easter meal, consider a choice ribeye or New York strip steak.  This year it's been warm enough you could actually consider a cook out for Easter and have a great family time with weiners, hamburgers and brats.  We'll have all those and other cuts with us Saturday along with our tasty cakes and breads.  A carrot apple cake with creamy buttercream icing is a perfect end to any meal.  Many of our breads make a fine beginning for an Easter breakfast or brunch.  We'll also have our salsas, relishes, chutneys, jams and jellies.

We certainly appreciate all of our loyal customers that have continued to visit us this winter at Victorian  Square.  You are wonderful folks and we are enjoying the opportunity to get to know you better.  We encourage other market customers to visit the market next winter.  You may be surprised at the variety of products that are available!

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!

GLEANING with Faith Feeds...

In 2011, Faith Feeds collected approximately 10,800 pounds of fresh food from our LFM members.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry. In total, the volunteers of Faith Feeds have collected over 68,000 pounds of food in 2011. Add to this total the 37,500 pounds collected in 2010 and you have a grand total of 105,000 pounds of food!

Over forty volunteers give of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.  Look for Faith Feeds at any of our given markets as they are hard at work harvesting for the hungry this summer!

If you are interested in participating in this unique ministry or you have a truck that you can make available from time to time, please contact Alexa at alexa@lexingtonfarmersmarket.com.

We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
