The Lexington Farmers' Market

April 11, 2012

Visit us outdoors this OPENING WEEKEND!  Saturday you'll find your favorite farmers set up with tables full of fresh, spring products at Cheapside Park from 7am-3pm.  Follow us to Southland Drive on Sunday from 10am-2pm!  Every weekend you can visit our wonderful market members and catch up with all that's happened over the winter while you shop for your favorite vegetables, eggs, meats, cheeses, flowers, bedding and garden plants, honey, wine, body care products, baked goods, prepared foods, specialty items and more!

We'll also be featuring several guest chefs who will be whipping up something special on site using Lexington Farmers' Market products to be sampled by market customers. Saturday, Sullivan University chefs and students--the talented chefs behind the delicious food at our annual market dinner, "A Taste of the Farm in the City" will be at market! Sullivan also prepared Cochinita Pibil with Potato and Black Beans featuring all LFM ingredients that we served at this year's "WUKY Heard it Through the Grapevine".  Needless to say, you don't want to miss the amazing things they've got planned for market this Saturday!  Sunday, Chef Alex from Good Foods Market and Cafe will be joining us to kick off our Southland Drive market!  Chef Alex and the great folks at Good Foods partnered with us for last summers' pool party, "Veggin' Out at the Pool".  Chef Alex always provides our market customers with unique and creative dishes that inspire great recipe ideas for at-home meals!  Last but certainly not least, The Wholesome Chef, Chef Carolyn, will be joining us on both Saturday and Sunday with delicious and nutritious samples using Lexington Farmers' Market products.

The Central Kentucky Home, Garden and Flower Show is in the works once again on April 12th through 15th at the Lexington Center Heritage Hall and Rupp Arena.  This year's show will feature the best of the best and the pick of the crop from LFM members to create a fun addition to the show.  Select items featured at the show range from fresh spring greens, fresh herb and bedding plants, natural meats, local honey and handmade body care products!

Lexington's annual Earthdays in the Bluegrass Celebration is hitting the ground running all throughout the month of April.  Earth Week is officially next week and what better way is there to celebrate the land we're living on than to eat local food?  You can check out all of their events here to find out how you can get involved--or better yet, vote with your fork and try to eat local all week long!

We also want to thank all of our loyal customers who followed us indoors to Victorian Square this winter.  You helped us make this the best winter market season yet!

See you all at market!

Hello Spring Salad with Sweet Cashews and Cranberries
Serves six
  • 2 cups raw cashews
  • Olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon sweet paprika (or to taste)
  • Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1 cup dried sweetened cranberries
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 3 tablespoons brandy or rum (optional)
  • 1 head romaine lettuce
  • 1 head red leaf lettuce
  • 1 bunch scallions, green tops only, sliced very thin
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 6 ounces very soft blue cheese, crumbled

Heat the oven to 350°F. Toss the cashews in a bowl with a drizzle of olive oil, the paprika and some salt and pepper. Spread out on a large baking sheet and roast for about 15 minutes, stirring frequently, until well toasted. Let cool.

In a small saucepan, heat the orange juice and brandy or rum until boiling, then stir in the cranberries and take off the heat. Let sit while the cashews cool.

Wash the lettuce and pat very dry, then tear into small pieces. Toss with the scallions.

Whisk the red wine vinegar and olive oil into the cranberry mixture. Taste and adjust, adding more sugar, oil, or vinegar as needed to balance it. Add the cashews and cheese to the salad, then pour in the cranberry mixture, stirring until well-dressed.

BLUE MOON FARM***Sustainably Grown***

Well, clear heads prevailed, and the basil is still safely in the greenhouse!  It was so tempting to put it out in the nice warm temperatures, but we definitely made the right choice!!  Our locust trees on the hillsides are in full bloom right now and they are beautiful!  The pear tree in the yard has already set tiny little pears!  Everything is so confused with this crazy weather!
As promised, we will give you a heads up on all the great things you'll find at the Blue Moon Farm booths this weekend, as the Lexington Farmers' Market opens outdoors for 2012!

SHIITAKE and OYSTER MUSHROOMS from Bracken County.
We will also have some of the beautiful SPRING LETTUCE MIX from our friends in Nicholas County this week, as our own is not quite to cutting size yet.  Again the cooler temperatures slowed things down just enough to throw the schedule off!
The "old gang" gets back together again this Saturday!  Leo, Jean, Elizabeth, Geraldine and Michael.  Come on down and welcome the market back to Cheapside!  It's a great time to introduce a non-market friend to the joys of strolling through the booths to hunt for special, healthy foods for their family.

Boone Creek Creamery

Handmade Artisan Cheese

Fayette County

Wow, are we excited about the opening of the Market and we're looking forward to seeing all of our old and new customers. We'll be downtown on Saturday and on Southland Drive on Sunday.

This week we will be introducing some new cheeses like our American Oak, a cheddar infused with oak barrel aged white wine and our Blackberry Serenade, an alpine Gruyere infused with blackberry wine. Delicious. You'll love our new Finnish Bread Cheese. When served warm, this Scandinavian delicacy is absolutely amazing.

And check out three of our cheeses that were recently in the World Cheese Championships.

-Kentucky Derby - A cheddar infused with Woodford Reserve to give this cheese a nice oaky finish.

-Sassy Redhead - An American style cheddar with whole peppercorns and red pepper flakes, then dusted with red paprika on the top to give it a distinctive "red head". Spicy, but not flaming hot, it leaves a nice glow in your mouth.

-Tuscan Sun - A taste of Italy with organic sun dried tomatoes and basil.

We also offer cheese making classes, supplies, and equipment. For details, call or visit our website. See you at the Market.

QUARLES DAYLILLIES AND FARM

Shelby County

Spring garden is coming right along.  The lettuce, onions, beets, carrots and peas are growing and the potatoes got planted this past weekend,.  Swiss chard and spinach is coming up and the greenhouse is full of pepper and tomato transplants. New babies are being born in the fields and Momma cows are keeping watch over newborns slumbering in the warm spring sun.

It's not long until we'll be back outside at the pavillion.  April 14th to be exact.  It'll be a big weekend with the Sunday Southland market starting along with the the Lexington Home and Garden Show which will run from Thurday through Sunday of the same weekend.  We'll be at all three places.  Come see us.  Until then we'll have one more weekend at Victorian Square.  Hopefully we'll have a little more kale.  It's trying real hard to bolt and doing a fine job.  Yellow flowers are popping out from the kale and turnips and it'll soon be mowed off and plowed under.

We'll have our coolers full of beef this weekend.  If you find that ham isn't high on your list for the Easter meal, consider a choice ribeye or New York strip steak.  This year it's been warm enough you could actually consider a cook out for Easter and have a great family time with weiners, hamburgers and brats.  We'll have all those and other cuts with us Saturday along with our tasty cakes and breads.  A carrot apple cake with creamy buttercream icing is a perfect end to any meal.  Many of our breads make a fine beginning for an Easter breakfast or brunch.  We'll also have our salsas, relishes, chutneys, jams and jellies.

We certainly appreciate all of our loyal customers that have continued to visit us this winter at Victorian  Square.  You are wonderful folks and we are enjoying the opportunity to get to know you better.  We encourage other market customers to visit the market next winter.  You may be surprised at the variety of products that are available!

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!

GLEANING with Faith Feeds...

In 2011, Faith Feeds collected approximately 10,800 pounds of fresh food from our LFM members.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry. In total, the volunteers of Faith Feeds have collected over 68,000 pounds of food in 2011. Add to this total the 37,500 pounds collected in 2010 and you have a grand total of 105,000 pounds of food!

Over forty volunteers give of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.  Look for Faith Feeds at any of our given markets as they are hard at work harvesting for the hungry this summer!

If you are interested in participating in this unique ministry or you have a truck that you can make available from time to time, please contact Alexa at alexa@lexingtonfarmersmarket.com.

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.
