Follow us as we move indoors to the atrium in Victorian Square this Saturday!  We're located directly across from the newly renovated Triangle Park, where you can celebrate winter by zipping around the new ice rink and then come inside to warm up with the Lexington Farmers' Market.  This weekend you can find delicious homemade breads and artisan cheeses, local meats and eggs, raw local honey, truffles and desserts, dog treats, decorative greens and a wide variety of winter crops, such as winter greens, squash and other root vegetables.

Among our unique edible products you can also do some of your holiday shopping at the Lexington Farmers' Market!  Through the month of December we'll be featuring special deals on LFM merchandise.  Our NEW sweatshirts, long sleeve tees, coffee mugs, tote bags, hats and market gift certificates make fantastic gifts.

Broccoli-Basil Mac and Cheese
  • 1 small butternut, acorn, or other winter squash, peeled, seeded and cut into tiny chunks
  • olive oil
  • 1 bunch of basil, stems removed
  • 2 slices good brown bread, stale or dried out in the oven
  • 1/2 a small head of broccoli (100 g / 3.5 oz), roughly chopped
  • 4 tablespoons creme fraiche or sour cream
  • 1 3/4 cups / 3.5 oz / 100 g grated white cheddar cheese
  • 1 3/4 cups / 3.5 oz / 100 g grated gruyere cheese
  • a large handful of (yellow) cherry tomatoes
  • 3 cups / 300 g dried (whole wheat) macaroni elbows
  • Preheat your oven to 400F / 200C with a rack in the middle. Put a large pot of water on to boil.
  • Place the squash on a large baking sheet, drizzle with a bit of olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until golden.
  • In the meantime, pulse half the basil, all of the bread, the broccoli and a lug of olive oil in a food processor until you've got a fine crumb. It'll be a bit damp - that's o.k. Transfer to a small bowl and give the processor a rinse.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the creme fraiche and grated cheeses.
  • Place the cherry tomatoes in the food processor with the remaining basil. Pulse a couple times to break things up, then add to the creme fraiche mixture and stir well.
  • Boil the pasta in well-salted water for a bit less time than the package suggests - you want it ever so slightly undercooked. Drain, reserving a big cup of the hot pasta water for later use. Return the hot pasta to the pan and add the cheese mixture to it. Add the squash and give it a good stir. Add pasta water to thin the sauce to the consistency of cream. It can be a bit runny as the pasta will soak it up in the oven.
  • Transfer everything to a large baking dish or casserole. Sprinkle the green breadcrumbs evenly across the top and bake for 20 -25 minutes or until the topping is crunchy. Remove from the oven, and wait 10 minutes before serving.
  • Serves 8 - 10.

Winter's not quite here yet but we're starting our winter market this Saturday.  We'll be in Victorian Square in our usual place along with all the hardy folk of the market.  We've still got some apples but they won't last much longer.  In the produce line we'll have turnips, mustard and kale greens, and potatoes as well as acorn, butternut, spagetti and delicata squashes.

We'll have all our breads on Saturday, which by the way, make great stocking stuffers and really thoughtful home made gifts for those folks that you want to remember at Christmas.  I personally give all the folks I work with a small loaf of bread every Christmas.  They never fail to bring a smile to the face of the receiver and you never find it regifted a week or a year later!  Relishes, salsas, jams and jellies are likewise gratefully received and enjoyed by all!

Come by and visit us this week at the Lexington Farmers Market.  We are excited about moving indoors at Victorian Square.

 

Need something special for your Office Christmas Party?  We will have a few 1 pound wedges of our Good Shepherd Cheese available this week, the perfect size for an office or family get together.  If you have never tried our gourmet sheep milk cheese, Good Shepherd Cheese is a great addition to your cheese tray or as a stand alone cheese served with your fresh fruit or nuts.  Speaking of nuts,  we will have fresh Black Walnuts from our farm that are gourmet size quarters for holiday baking or add them to your cheese tray.

 

Our daughter Jennifer will be offering her wonderful Sheep Milk Soap for those that prefer milk soaps that are all natural and unscented.  She will also introduce her Felted Sheep Milk Soap which has an outer layer of our felted sheep's wool, a natural way to exfoliate your skin.

 

Also, ask us about our Gift Certificates for 1 pound of our Good Shepherd Cheese.  These make great stocking stuffers or corporate gifts.  Our inventory of cheese from the 2011 season won't last long, but our Gift Certificates will reserve 1 Pound of Good Shepherd Cheese from our first 2012 batches available in April 2012.  As an add bonus, we will ship your Gift cheese anywhere in the lower 48 states and we will pay the shipping.  (Our way of saying Thank You for patiently waiting for our next round of cheese making.  As you may know, sheep dairying is seasonal with our ewes being very busy right now preparing to become mommas.  But come February, lambs will be coming, sheep milk will be flowing and Good Shepherd Cheese will begin aging in our "Cheese Cave" ready for delivery in April.

The Lexington Farmers Market will now move inside for the next three months at Victorian Square across from Rupp Arena in downtown Lexington, so come out and stock up for the winter.We will be  there this Saturday, December 3rd. Come on out and replenish your local honey, pollen supplies, and beeswax candles.

You may also purchase honey, pollen, and/or beeswax candles from us anytime from our home at 1909 Nicholasville Road in Lexington. Out home is located one block north (toward downtown) of the intersection of Southland Drive and Nicholasville Road. Turn on Goodrich Avenue and take the first driveway on your right, and you will be in our back yard. There will be a silver travel trailer (Airstream) under an awning directly in front of you. Your honey will be on the back porch. If we are not home, just leave the money on the counter.  There is change in a small jar on the counter if you need some.

On the cheese front, we are still waiting for enough milk to make cheese.  We need at least 10 gallons every three days to make a batch that will meet regulations, and we just don't have that much yet.  The does are waddling around making "Om" sounds which means babies are close.  They have had ultrasounds just to make sure those round bellies weren't from too much alfalfa, and sure enough, plenty of kids are on the way. We are guessing they will all arrive at once, and it will be crazy fun, plenty of milk and cheese for the winter, and very little sleep for me!  Fortunately, the whole process is very energizing.

I pulled over and cut the engine. Slumped beside me in the passenger seat, the famous mystery writer, lecturer and bee expert. I needed to gather my wits. Some evil was afoot and the Lexington Farmers Market will never be the same if we can't solve this one. Something had happened to the famous LFM street musicians. Those artists and free spirits who make our commercial arena such a joyful, musical place. Something, perhaps sinister,  was 
plucking them from amongst us making the marketplace less gay. I needed most urgently to consult one of the keener minds around town when it concerned anything murky or criminal, but, oh, here she is, awakening somewhat from her honey-induced stupor. " it's the cold weather " she said and fell back asleep.

Garlic planting season is here, so you will no longer find us at the market on Saturdays.  The first of the 2012 crop is in the ground!  Our BABY GREEN GARLIC has been planted for the first markets of the year, and a few of the early softneck varieties are in the ground too.  Now it looks like a couple of days of rain are setting in....just in time, in my opinion!  This Tuesday is my (Jean's) birthday, and we are planning a day off!  Hard to imagine!  Almost like normal folks! 
We're hoping for a reasonable amount of rain, but not too much, as it takes forever to dry out in the cooler temperatures, and we'll need to get back to the garlic fields soon.
With Thanksgiving coming up next week, we thought we should run our  "Not Your Average Cranberry Sauce" recipe again.  It is SO good!  We encourage you to try it this year....your family and friends will love you for it!

  

"Not Your Average" Cranberry Sauce

Into a medium saucepan put: 
 1 Bag Fresh Cranberries, washed and drained 
 1 Cup Water 
 1/2 Cup Honey 
 1 Large Apple or Pear, peeled, cored and cut into cubes 
 1 Medium Jalapeno Pepper (Optional) finely minced 
           (remove seeds first for a little less heat!!) 
 1-2 Cloves Blue Moon Farm Garlic, minced 
 1/2 to 3/4 inch Freshly Grated Ginger Root

Bring to a boil, then simmer until cranberries pop. 
 Serve warm or cold.

Enjoy!

Boone Creek Creamery specializes in Old World cheeses that are often difficult to find - wonderful cheeses like Lancashire, Rhapsody En Bleu, Cheshire, Wensleydale, Pyrenees, Cantal, or Beaufort. Of course we've added our own touch to create some new classics like our Ginger Rhapsody, Tuscan Sun, Abbey Road, Wildcat Blue, and our exclusive Coffee Gouda.

You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment in our micro-creamery. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree.

Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite dairy farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.  You can find us through the winter at Triangle Park where you can warm up with a crepe while you stroll through the Lexington Farmers' Market inside Victorian Square.  

 

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

 

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination. 

 

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

The Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning and the Morris Bookshop are cosponsoring the Homegrown Authors Series this summer at the Lexington Farmers' Market. On select Saturdays you can meet a local author and buy a signed copy of his or her book at market. The series will return next summer with a vibrant new crop of Kentucky authors!    

 

 

SPECIAL GUESTS AT THE LFM...     

 

Central Baptist Hospital will continue selling their cookbook, Beyond the Fence, at the Friends of the Farmers' Market table. Recipes from their cookbook were featured at our farm dinner, A Taste of the Farm in the City!

KID'S ACTIVITIES AT THE LFM...

 

LFM kids' activities will return next year!  Thank you to all of the local organizations who helped get kids excited about local, healthy food. 

 

 

GLEANING with Faith Feeds...

 

So far this year, Faith Feeds collected approximately 10,800 pounds of fresh food from our LFM members.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry.  So far this year Faith Feeds has collected and delivered more than 49,800 pounds of food!

 

Over forty volunteers give of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.  Look for Faith Feeds at any of our given markets as they are hard at work harvesting for the hungry this summer!

PARKING is always FREE at all of our markets if you know where to look!  

 

On Saturday it's as easy as parking in the Financial Center Garage across the street from Cheapside Park and next to the blue 5/3 building. This lot is generously provided to us by Central Parking and for this we are extremely grateful.  Beyond that garage, all street parking is free on Saturdays and there are also several pay lots in the area.

A friendly reminder: When shopping at our Tuesday and Thursday markets on South Broadway and Maxwell, please remember to park first and then come check out what our wonderful vendors have brought with them. The market is not a drive-thru and in order to ensure every ones safety we need to keep the aisles free of cars!
