The Lexington Farmers' Market

October 19, 2011

"Food is a common language and a universal right.  All people should be able to eat food that is good for them, good for the people who grow it and good for the planet"  --Slow Food USA

The Lexington Farmers' Market is so much more than just a place to pick up your weekly groceries.  In many ways, the market serves to bridge the gap between farmer and consumer.  There is no better way to learn about where your food comes from and how it is grown and harvested than by talking with the grower, which is something that you're able to do when you shop local at our market.  Likewise, the grower can provide insightful tips on how to prepare and preserve your food, how to tend to your own personal garden and how to save money while eating locally-grown, healthy food.

Speaking of eating healthy food while saving money, why not join in the slow food festivities out on Bleugrass Chevre's farm this Sunday?  All ingredients needed to prepare a healthy meal using real, local, whole foods will come from the Lexington Farmers' Market with costs the same or less per person than a fast-food meal.  For more information about this dinner, email Bleugrass Chevre at [email protected] for reservations, directions or more information.

To plan a $5 Local Food Meal of your own, visit Slow Food USA for great recipe ideas and pick up your ingredients at the Lexington Farmers' Market!  Healthy, local, sustainably raised food should not have to cost more than fast-food.  Vote with your fork, plan a dinner and talk with your friends about how shopping at the Lexington Farmers' Market can help stretch your dollar while investing in Kentucky agriculture.

October is National Apple Month! Whether bobbing for apples, biting into a juicy caramel apple or baking a comforting apple pie, celebrate all things apple this month by supporting of Kentucky's many apple orchards.  To find an orchard near you, visit Kentucky Proud and experience the unbridled spirit of Kentucky's farms.

PS: Edible Louisville Magazine is expanding to Lexington and the rest of the great state of Kentucky!  You can ALWAYS find your magazine for free at the Lexington Farmers' Market!

PSS: If you're not familiar with Kentucky Food Bloggers check out this list from their Facebook page.  So many Kentuckians are doing incredible things in the local food world and many of them keep us posted on their blogs.  Most blogs also feature great seasonal recipes which always come in handy when you spontaneously purchase zucchini blossoms without a clue how to prepare them (or that you could even eat them in the first place)!

Sausage Pizza, Topped with Crispy Kale
makes one large (12- to 14-inch) pizza

  • 15 ounces diced tomatoes with Italian seasoning
  • 5 large curly kale leaves
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/3 pound sweet Italian sausage
  • 1 store-bought pizza dough, at room temperature
  • 1/2 pound fresh mozzarella, cut into thin slices

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Pour the Italian seasoned tomatoes into a mesh strainer and let them sit, squishing and stirring with a spoon a few times, until they are quite dry.
  • Strip the kale leaves from their stems, rip into 1-inch pieces. Wash and spin dry in a salad spinner or pat very thoroughly with a kitchen towel. In a large bowl, toss them with enough olive oil to lightly coat the leaves (you don't want them to be dripping, just slick). Spread onto a baking sheet, sprinkle with salt, and cook for 12 to 15 minutes, until crispy.
  • Raise the oven temperature to 500 degrees.
  • While the oven is preheating, cook and crumble the sausage in a pan until no longer pink. Set aside. Take the dough out of its packaging (you'll need a dash of flour to keep it from sticking to your hands) and slowly stretch it. I like to drape the dough over the backs of my hands and stretch it from the middle out. You can also pat it out on a cutting board or baking sheet. Either way, you'll need to stop every once in a while and let the dough sit for a second, so it gets used to its new shape.
  • Place the dough on a baking sheet and scatter the tomatoes, then sausage, then mozzarella slices over it. Bake for 12 minutes, or until the crust is brown and the cheese is bubbly. Remove from the oven, pile on the crispy kale, then slice.

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

GLEANING with Faith Feeds...

Between June 17 and November 20, 2010, Faith Feeds collected approximately 37,500 pounds of fresh food.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry.  So far this summer Faith Feeds has collected and delivered more than 16,250 pounds of food!

Over forty volunteers give of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.  Look for Faith Feeds at any of our given markets as they are hard at work harvesting for the hungry this summer!

If you are interested in participating in this unique ministry or you have a truck that you can make available from time to time, please contact Alexa at [email protected].

PARKING is always FREE at all of our markets if you know where to look!

On Saturday it's as easy as parking in the Financial Center Garage across the street from Cheapside Park and next to the blue 5/3 building. This lot is generously provided to us by Central Parking and for this we are extremely grateful.  Beyond that garage, all street parking is free on Saturdays and there are also several pay lots in the area.

Saturday Parking Map

A friendly reminder: When shopping at our Tuesday and Thursday markets on South Broadway and Maxwell, please remember to park first and then come check out what our wonderful vendors have brought with them. The market is not a drive-thru and in order to ensure every ones safety we need to keep the aisles free of cars!

Finally, if you have ever lost items at any of our markets and they have not been returned, please check with Jeff, the executive director, during market hours or by phone at (859) 608-2655.

GOING MORE GREEN - We are doing everything we can to go green - so we are reusing clean plastic bags for our customers. Another way we can help our honeybee friends.

ELMWOOD STOCK FARM

Georgetown, KY

We will be attending each weekend farmers market this fall and hope to see
you there too!

At both the Saturday morning downtown market (year-round) and the Sunday
markets on Southland Drive (through October), we will have a selection of
Certified Organic produce, organic chicken, organic beef, organic farm
eggs, jarred products, dried pantry staples, and much more!

TALKIN' TURKEY?  At the farm, our Heritage breed and broad-breasted breed
Certified Organic turkeys are sizing up nicely.  Elmwood is one of just a
few farms in the US that grow heritage breed turkeys that are also
Certified Organic, making these holiday turkeys a very special item.

We keep the breeding stock hens and toms here year-round.  The American
Livestock Breeds Conservancy recognizes some of our breeds as in danger of
extinction.  In order for farms to afford the costs and upkeep of keeping
heritage breed animals without a supporting source of income to offset the
expenses, Slow Food USA is helping to spread the word and promote heritage
breed products as a food source.  By creating demand for heritage foods,
then farms can work to produce and maintain heritage breeds such as
Bourbon Red and Narragansett turkeys.

We take pre-orders for Elmwood turkeys either in person at the market or
though email.  They are processed at a USDA inspected facility and will be
ready for pickup the weekend prior to Thanksgiving or for December
holidays.  Just contact the farm and we'll share more details with you on
expected available sizes, the differences in taste and appearance
dependent on heritage or broad-breasted breeds, and pricing.

Certified Organic PRODUCE we are harvesting this month includes the last
of summer Tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplant, Raspberries, and Okra.  Seasonal
fall items include Potatoes, Onions, Garlic, Beets, Savoy Cabbage, Swiss
Chard, Celery, Leeks, Daikon and other Radishes, Kale, Collard and Mustard
Greens, and Fall Squashes of Acorn, Sweet Dumpling, Butternut, Stripetti,
Buttercup, and Spaghetti.

MEAT and POULTRY  We have restocked our inventory of grass-fed Angus
organic beef, along with a full selection of certified organic hens and
cut-up chicken pieces.  In addition, we have chicken liver and ground
chicken.  Feel free to order ahead for quantity amounts or a particular
cut for that special meal, and we'll have it ready for pickup at any of
the farmers markets.  View our website for special Beef & Chicken Bundles,
popular this time of year going into cold-weather baking and stew season.

EGGS We offer each market our certified organic eggs from free-ranging
hens who live outdoors on grass pasture.  Both whole dozen and half-dozens
available. Our hens are always outside, enjoying the green growing grass &
clover and rewarding us with beautiful big brown eggs packed full of
flavor, orangey color, and healthful omega-3-fatty acids.

These days, more than ever, it's important to know the source of your
family's food and you can look to our local organic farm to meet your
body's nutritional needs resulting in good health.  Visit our website to
learn more, review our price lists, pre-order your special items, or to
contact Elmwood for more information.

QUARLES DAYLILLIES AND FARM

Shelby County

We've gotten our first taste of fall weather with the little dusting of frost that most of us in outlaying areas saw on Sunday morning so we've decided that fall is here.   In order to help our customers stay warm and fortified, we're offering hot chocolate and bowls of steaming chili for sale made with Quarles beef as a way to keep warm while doing your weekly shopping at the market.  If you have your own favorite chili recipe, we have a good supply of ground beef, ground round and ground chuck to help you turn out your creation to rave reviews.  Some of our round steak as well as our kabob and fajita meat make excellent stews and vegetable soups.  Give it a try and you'll see!

We've got pumpkin and apple breads just made for tailgating and our salsa is great for those crisp days during football season.  We also continue to have a good supply of produce including potatoes and six types of winter squash.

Visit us on Facebook to keep up with the farm or check our website at quarlesfarm.com for placing an order for quick pick up.  Hope to see you at market on Saturday or Sunday!

CAFFEMARCO

Bourbon County

"Fair Trade, organic, hand-crafted, and utterly delicious."

 -The Lexington Herald-Leader

I pulled over and cut the engine. Slumped beside me in the passenger seat, the famous mystery writer, lecturer and bee expert. I needed to gather my wits. Some evil was afoot and the Lexington Farmers Market will never be the same if we can't solve this one. Something had happened to the famous LFM street musicians. Those artists and free spirits who make our commercial arena such a joyful, musical place. Something, perhaps sinister,  was
plucking them from amongst us making the marketplace less gay. I needed most urgently to consult one of the keener minds around town when it concerned anything murky or criminal, but, oh, here she is, awakening somewhat from her honey-induced stupor. " it's the cold weather " she said and fell back asleep.
Oh.

Boone Creek Creamery

Handmade Artisan Cheese

We were recently featured in the Lexington Herald-Leader.  To read the article follow this link: http://www.kentucky.com/2011/09/29/1901107/lexington-cheese-maker-becomes.html

Boone Creek Creamery specializes in Old World cheeses that are often difficult to find - wonderful cheeses like Lancashire, Rhapsody En Bleu, Cheshire, Wensleydale, Pyrenees, Cantal, or Beaufort. Of course we've added our own touch to create some new classics like our Ginger Rhapsody, Tuscan Sun, Abbey Road, Wildcat Blue, and our exclusive Coffee Gouda.

You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment in our micro-creamery. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree.

Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite dairy farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy.

We also offer cheese making classes, supplies, and equipment. For details, call or visit our website.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crpe emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon apptit!
