THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

If you want a better quality of life for all of us, please join The Fayette Alliance today for free.  Visit www.fayettealliance.com for more information.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

Keep your eyes peeled throughout the month of July for extra-special lemonade stands around the market!  The Salvation Army of Central Kentucky sponsors LemonAid Days, a month long event aimed to empower young people to make a positive difference in their community by operating a lemonade stand and donating the proceeds to help homeless children residing in The Salvation Army's Emergency Homeless Shelter.

KID'S ACTIVITIES AT THE LFM...

The Lexington Learning Cooperative kid's booth will return this week!

GLEANING with Faith Feeds...

Between June 17 and November 20, 2010, Faith Feeds collected approximately 37,500 pounds of fresh food.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry.

Over forty volunteers give of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.  Look for Faith Feeds at any of our given markets as they are hard at work harvesting for the hungry this summer!

If you are interested in participating in this unique ministry or you have a truck that you can make available from time to time, please contact Alexa at [email protected].

VOLUNTEER WITH THE LFM!

Looking for a way to contribute to the local food movement in Lexington?  We are always in need of volunteers at our markets! Send an email to [email protected] if you're interested!

PARKING is always FREE at all of our markets if you know where to look!

On Saturday it's as easy as parking in the Financial Center Garage across the street from Cheapside Park and next to the blue 5/3 building. This lot is generously provided to us by Central Parking and for this we are extremely grateful.  Beyond that garage, all street parking is free on Saturdays and there are also several pay lots in the area.

Saturday Parking Map

A friendly reminder: When shopping at our Tuesday and Thursday markets on South Broadway and Maxwell, please remember to park first and then come check out what our wonderful vendors have brought with them. The market is not a drive-thru and in order to ensure every ones safety we need to keep the aisles free of cars!

Finally, if you have ever lost items at any of our markets and they have not been returned, please check with Jeff, the executive director, during market hours or by phone at (859) 608-2655.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crpe emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon apptit!

on grass pasture each market.  Both whole dozen and half-dozens available.

outside, enjoying the green growing grass & clover and rewarding us with

beautiful big brown eggs packed full of flavor, orangey color, and

healthful omega-3-fatty acids.

OLIVA BELLA EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OILS FROM ITALY

Ciao Lexington.... "WE'RE BAAACCCKKK" at the Saturday Farmers Market!

You will find our booth at the entrance of the market near Main Street.

Come taste our Olio Rustico from Sicily, our 8 year old Balsamico from Modena, our Pomodori and Cipollini sauces that we make in house.

We will also have our European breads and Benedetto Cavalieri pasta from Italy.

Remember we have moved our store location to 400 Old Vine Street, suite #104, right next to Wines on Vine.  Call 859 983 3567 if you get lost or need directions.

ABIGAIL'S HONEY

HONEY - I will have lots of CLOVER HONEY this weekend.  Something special for the mead maker.  I will start having a few 12 lbs jugs of honey.  This will be for a short time as the honey flow season will end very soon.  Remember - if your honey starts to crystallize - just put the jar in the dashboard of your car on a sunny day for an hour.  Will reliquidfy again.  And think before you cut down a blooming plant.  A honeybee needs two million blossoms to make only one pound of honey.  Less plants.  Less honey.

SOAP - APPLE CINNAMON will be ready for your pleasure.  A fresh crisp smelling green soap.

Check out what is going on with me at www.abigailshoneyblog.blogspot.com for News From The River.

SUPERLATIVE COFFEE ROASTERS

Fayette County

We wanted to say thank you and best wishes to our fellow market participants.  We have decided to close Superlative Coffee Roasters so you won't see our booth or smell our fresh roasted coffee on Saturdays ... at least for a little while.  It's all good, though.  Jenny will be working for another company and traveling quite a bit and as a result it makes sense to close the roastery and put the little red roaster into storage.  We have enjoyed our time at the market, in the rain, in the snow, in the dark, and in the intense heat!  We've met so many great people and were very proud to be part of a unique group of farmers and producers who make the Lexington Farmers Market such a special place.  It really is the greatest little market in Kentucky.

Thank you all for making it a wonderful and rewarding experience for us and we hope to see you soon ... as customers!

The 2011 season for the outdoor Lexington Farmer's Market is in full operation. On Saturday July 16th we will be downtown at Cheapside Park and on Sunday July 17th we will be on Southland Drive.  We will be at both markets unless it rains, so come on out and replenish your local honey and pollen supplies.

You may still purchase honey, pollen, and/or beeswax candles from us anytime from our home at 1909 Nicholasville Road. Call us first at 859 276-0258, and we will put what you want on our back porch for you to pick up. You may also call to make an appointment to look at Bev's candle selection.

Out home is located one block north (toward downtown) of the intersection of Southland Drive and Nicholasville Road. Turn on Goodrich Avenue and take the first driveway on your right, and you will be in our back yard. There will be a silver travel trailer (Airstream) under an awning directly in front of you. Your honey will be on the back porch. If we are not home, just leave the money on the counter.  There is change in a small jar on the counter if you need some.

The market is really rocking these days, with sweet corn and tomatoes in season.  We've seen a substantial increase of new faces, and hope that they find something great to keep them coming back even when corn's not available!!  The Sunday market at Southland last Sunday was as busy as we've ever seen!
It has been such a strange growing season this spring that we'll have FRESH SNOW PEAS again this week!  They are SO great in a stir fry, soup, or salad!  We love them in our pasta sauce too!  For your stir fry we'll also have BABY LEEKS, RED CIPPOLINI ONIONS, FRESH GARLIC, maybe a few PEA SHOOTS (another absurdity for mid-July!), your choice of FRESH CUT BASIL or CILANTRO to season.  OYSTER MUSHROOMS from Bracken County.  For the meat eaters we'll have PASTURED PORK of all kinds from Stone Cross Farm in Spencer County or GRASS FINISHED BEEF from Colcord Farm in Bourbon County.  Great for stir fry or grilling!  Have you ever done a "mixed grill" of sausages?  It's great for a party...something to please every taste!

We'll have lots of beautiful FRESH CUT BASIL in big bunches.  Add some to your salads, use like lettuce on a sandwich, use in pasta sauce or for pesto.  Pesto freezes beautifully.....just imagine a dinner on a cold and blustery January night....pasta with your homemade pesto......YUM!!  And did you know that you can make pesto from CILANTRO instead?  It is fantastic with fish or chicken, on pasta, or in a burrito.
Sunrise Bakery will supply us with  fresh ARTISAN BREADS, PASTRIES, GARLIC BAGELS and MUFFINS, Stone Cross Farm and Kenny's supply us with KY farm fresh CHEESES, and Bourbon Barrel Foods makes the sauces....SOY, WORCESTERSHIRE, & KENTUCKYAKI, and SMOKED SALT, PEPPER and PAPRIKA, and BOURBON VANILLA EXTRACT..
Our own "knock-your-socks-off" GARLIC POWDERS and PEPPER POWDERS, GARLIC SCAPE PESTO and CHAMPAGNE DRESSING (another great topper for your BLT!).
Did I forget to mention FRESHLY HARVESTED GARLIC???  It is SO good at this time of year!  Crunchy and juicy like a good apple, with a great shelf life!  This week we'll have the first bagged garlic in addition to big Music bulbs.
Stop by and have a look, Saturday back behind the History Museum on Short Street 7:30-2:30 or Sunday in front of Goodyear on Southland Drive 10-2.
If you're planning a night out on the town, consider Dudley's on Short, Table 310, Saul Good Restaurants, Good Foods Cafe or Stella's KY Deli who do a great job in supporting local farms!!  And check out Shorty's Market for local produce and meats when the farmers' market is not open!

QUARLES FARM
Shelby County

Our daylilies are still showing some great color and we're enjoying them to no end.    We're having open gardens Friday-Sunday at 9548 Waddy Rd, Waddy, KY.  Stop at the Saturday or Sunday market and then take a nice drive down I-64 to come see some great later blooming daylilies.

We got some lovely rain last Friday; the pastures and gardens have responded beautifully.  Winter squash vines are growing like crazy and summer squash and tomato vines are bearing heavy loads.  I picked the first gallon of blackberries this weekend.  We're canning pickled beets and squash pickles as fast as we can and soon will be making some zucchini relish to restock the larder.  If you haven't tried the relish on our brats then you're missing a great treat! Don't  forget, we can recycle any of the jars and rings from any of our canned goods that you purchase.  If you don't use them for canning , let us recycle them!

We'll be at Saturday and Sunday markets with full freezers of beef , baked goods, canned goods and some vegetables.  Stop by to see us, visit for a while and pick out a fine steak for a special occasion or some ground beef for a good meatloaf.  Our ground chuck or ground round is also great in any recipe that calls for hamburger.  We also have beef sausage in links or in bulk that makes a different alternative to pork sausage.  Give it a try and see what you think.

Check us out at quarlesfarm.com or look at our daylily photos at quarlesdaylilies.com.  Friend us on Facebook and we'll keep you up to date with what's going on "down on the farm!"

BLUEGRASS CHEVRE

Boone Creek Creamery

Handmade Artisan Cheese

Boy are we glad that Spring is finally here, and we're excited to introduce our handmade cheeses to the Lexington Farmer's Market. This week we will have several cheeses available but be sure you check out our traditional Amish Cup Cheeses and our bourbon infused Kentucky Derby.

Boone Creek Creamery specializes in Old World cheeses that are often difficult to find - wonderful cheeses like Lancashire, Stilton, Cheshire, Wensleydale, Pyrenees, Cantal, or Beaufort. Of course we've added our own touch to create some new classics like our Ginger Stilton, Tuscan Sun, Abbey Road, and our exclusive Coffee Gouda.

You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment in our micro-creamery. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree.

Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite dairy farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy.

We also offer cheese making classes, supplies, and equipment. For details, call or visit our website.

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

Hillside Heritage will be offering our complete line of pork cuts this weekend!  Our specialty sausages, now sold in 1 lb. bulk packages, as well as in links, have been a bit hit with our customers.  A recent addition is smoked pork sandwiches and smoked bratwurst available for purchase on Saturdays and Sundays. You won't be able to resist the wonderful aroma coming from our tent.  Try a sandwich and you'll find out that Clay is quite an excellent cook!  See you this weekend!

COOKIN' UP KENTUCKY

Fayette County

Hey folks,

Cookin' Up Kentucky has another busy weekend and unfortunately, we will be unable to offer the breakfast burrito and any other grill items this Saturday.
We will have our famous omelette and fried green tomato sandwich along with local BBQ to take-home or to enjoy for lunch. Be on the look out for our fresh squeezed lemonade with local blackberries!

Thanks,

Chef Jacob
