The Lexington Farmers' Market

July 6, 2011

I hope that everyone had an enjoyable holiday full of delicious food, great friends and at least a couple of fireworks. July is one of our busiest months at the Lexington Farmers' Market. Our farmers have been working non-stop as we are nearing the peak of the season, which means that all of your favorite summer produce will soon be a consistent item on all of your cookout menus.

We're also gearing up for several LFM events this month. Veggin' Out at the Pool is THIS FRIDAY! Purchase your tickets at the LFM on Thursday, Good Foods Market and Cafe or the Southland Aquatic Center for a tasty and refreshing evening in celebration of local food.

Our annual, self-guided Farm Tour will take place on Saturday, July 23rd and all of the farm destinations should be confirmed by this weekend.  Much is also coming together for our second annual farm dinner: A Taste of the Farm in the City, which will take place on Saturday, July 30th at Cheapside Park.  We've added several new special features to the event, including reserved sponsor tables that guarantee a private table filled with fruits, breads, cheeses, wine, desserts and more for you and yours.

See below in our Special Events section for more information on any of these fun and delicious events.

As always, thank you to our loyal customers for helping our market thrive.  We couldn't do it without you all!

I realize that I've yet to include some carnivore-friendly recipes in the newsletter so, in honor of breaking six years of vegetarianism over the holiday weekend, I bring to you a recipe that I can't wait to cook up!

Chicken Breasts Stuffed with Garlic and Herbed Goat Cheese

  • 1 whole garlic head
  • 1/3 cup (3 ounces) goat cheese with herbs, softened
  • 6 (6-ounce) skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • Preheat oven to 350°.
  • Remove white papery skin from garlic head (do not peel or separate the cloves). Wrap head in foil. Bake at 350° for 1 hour; cool 10 minutes. Separate cloves; squeeze to extract garlic pulp. Discard skins. Combine garlic pulp and cheese, stirring well; set aside.
  • Cut a horizontal slit through thickest portion of each chicken breast half to form a pocket. Stuff about 4 teaspoons cheese mixture into each pocket. Sprinkle chicken evenly on both sides with salt and pepper.
  • Heat oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken to pan; cook 3 minutes or until lightly browned. Turn chicken over. Bake at 350° for 20 minutes or until a thermometer registers 165°; let stand 5 minutes.

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

GLEANING with Faith Feeds...

Between June 17 and November 20, 2010, Faith Feeds collected approximately 37,500 pounds of fresh food.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry.

Over forty volunteers give of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.  Look for Faith Feeds at any of our given markets as they are hard at work harvesting for the hungry this summer!

If you are interested in participating in this unique ministry or you have a truck that you can make available from time to time, please contact Alexa at alexa@lexingtonfarmersmarket.com.

VOLUNTEER WITH THE LFM!

Looking for a way to contribute to the local food movement in Lexington?  We are always in need of volunteers at our markets! Send an email to alexa@lexingtonfarmersmarket.com if you're interested!

PARKING is always FREE at all of our markets if you know where to look!

On Saturday it's as easy as parking in the Financial Center Garage across the street from Cheapside Park and next to the blue 5/3 building. This lot is generously provided to us by Central Parking and for this we are extremely grateful.  Beyond that garage, all street parking is free on Saturdays and there are also several pay lots in the area.

Saturday Parking Map

A friendly reminder: When shopping at our Tuesday and Thursday markets on South Broadway and Maxwell, please remember to park first and then come check out what our wonderful vendors have brought with them. The market is not a drive-thru and in order to ensure every ones safety we need to keep the aisles free of cars!

Finally, if you have ever lost items at any of our markets and they have not been returned, please check with Jeff, the executive director, during market hours or by phone at (859) 608-2655.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass.

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!

Many thanks and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Bob and Charlie

HOME PICKINS

other items each week through the year.

Certified Organic PRODUCE we are harvesting this month starts off a little

behind schedule, but seems to be catching up fast!

Our current harvest includes Kale Greens (red Russian, green curly,

and Lacinato), Collard Greens, Turnip and Mustard Greens; Kohlrabi; Sugar

Snap Peas and Shell out Peas; Spinach; Purple Top White Globe Turnips; Red

Beets; a variety of fresh Culinary Herbs and Edible Flowers.

We expect to start harvesting soon: Broccoli, Summer Squash and Zucchini,

Baby Squash Mix, and Cucumbers.

MEATS and POULTRY our inventory of grass-fed Angus organic beef has been

restocked, along with a full selection of certified organic hens and packs

of whole cut-up chickens.  We have Cornish hens, chicken liver, and ground

turkey. Feel free to order ahead for quantity amounts or a particular cut

for that special meal, and we'll have it ready for pickup at any of the

farmers markets.

EGGS we offer our certified organic eggs from free-ranging hens outdoors

on grass pasture each market.  Both whole dozen and half-dozens available.

 Our hens are always

outside, enjoying the green growing grass & clover and rewarding us with

beautiful big brown eggs packed full of flavor, orangey color, and

healthful omega-3-fatty acids.

These days, more than ever, it's important to know the source of your

family's food and you can look to a local organic farm to meet your body's

nutritional needs resulting in good health.  Visit our website to learn

OLIVA BELLA EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OILS FROM ITALY

Ciao Lexington.... "WE'RE BAAACCCKKK" at the Saturday Farmers Market!

You will find our booth at the entrance of the market near Main Street.

Come taste our Olio Rustico from Sicily, our 8 year old Balsamico from Modena, our Pomodori and Cipollini sauces that we make in house.

We will also have our European breads and Benedetto Cavalieri pasta from Italy.

Remember we have moved our store location to 400 Old Vine Street, suite #104, right next to Wines on Vine.  Call 859 983 3567 if you get lost or need directions.

ABIGAIL'S HONEY

HONEY - I will have lots of CLOVER HONEY this weekend.  Something special for the mead maker.  I will start having a few 12 lbs jugs of honey.  This will be for a short time as the honey flow season will end very soon.  Remember - if your honey starts to crystallize - just put the jar in the dashboard of your car on a sunny day for an hour.  Will reliquidfy again.  And think before you cut down a blooming plant.  A honeybee needs two million blossoms to make only one pound of honey.  Less plants.  Less honey.

SOAP - APPLE CINNAMON will be ready for your pleasure.  A fresh crisp smelling green soap.

HOMEGROWN AUTHORS - From 10am to noon, I will be at the HOMEGROWN AUTHORS table signing my two books, "Death By A Honeybee" and "Death By Drowning".  There will be a friend tending my regular booth who still will give you great service - so stop by and say hello.

Check out what is going on with me at www.abigailshoneyblog.blogspot.com for News From The River.

The 2011 season for the outdoor Lexington Farmer's Market is in full operation. On Saturday July 9th we will be downtown at Cheapside Park and on Sunday July 10th we will be on Southland Drive.  We will be at both markets unless it rains, so come on out and replenish your local honey and pollen supplies.

Out home is located one block north (toward downtown) of the intersection of Southland Drive and Nicholasville Road. Turn on Goodrich Avenue and take the first driveway on your right, and you will be in our back yard. There will be a silver travel trailer (Airstream) under an awning directly in front of you. Your honey will be on the back porch. If we are not home, just leave the money on the counter.  There is change in a small jar on the counter if you need some.

BLUE MOON FARM***Sustainably Grown***

Madison County

We are deep into summer here, wishing for rain.  As I climbed our back hill last night (a "shortcut" from our river bottom gardens up to our ridge-top house, shown  to us years ago by Rosamond, our 1st and last Malamute,) I saw numerous baby toads.  The hill is steep, putting my face and line of vision much closer to the ground than if I were on flat ground and the little toads were no bigger than a nickel.  I like it that creatures like the toads, and numerous and varied birds share this spot with us.  Orioles and indigo buntings are some of our working companions.
It was great to see all the smiling faces last week, our first dry holiday weekend of the season.  We're gearing up for another rocking market this week, with the advent of Sam Livesay's Pulaski County sweet corn and early heirloom tomatoes.  We are thrilled that our garlic harvest is all housed in our old tobacco barn, ready to compliment your culinary efforts.
We will this week, have our fresh GARLIC by the bulb,  GARLIC POWDER and SMOKED GARLIC POWDER, as well as our famous GARLIC SCAPE PESTO.  Pair it with some of Lexington Pasta's fresh pasta and dazzle your family.
Our candy onions are about played out, but we'll have RED CIPPOLINI ONIONS and BABY LEEKS to round out our allium offerings.  We'll hope to scare up a few more SNOW PEAS and some OYSTER MUSHROOMS from Bracken County, and we'll be bringing some fresh cut BASIL and CILANTRO.
We'll also have KY LAMB....SPARE RIBS (see link which follows, to article with recipes), SHOULDER ROASTS, GROUND for burgers, cubed STEW MEAT for shish kabobs or burgoo!  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/26/magazine/aye-theres-the-rib.html?scp=2&sq=Lamb%20spare%20rib%20recipe&st=cse
PORK from Stone Cross Farm.....How about a mixed SAUSAGE barbeque... ITALIAN, BRATWURST, POLISH, CHORIZO, HOT DOGS....all nitrate-free!  or PORK CHOPS, COUNTRY STYLE RIBS or TENDERLOIN.
GRASS FINISHED BEEF from Colcord Farm.....RIBEYE, SIRLOIN, NY STRIP STEAKS OR FILETS, or out-of-this-world BURGER.  Top the burgers with our GARLIC SCAPE PESTO, or customize with different CHEESES for each diner!  We have KY CHEESE from Kenny's in Barren Co, and Stone Cross Farm in Spencer Co.   This week we'll be sampling KENTUCKY  ROSE and SUNDRIED TOMATO BASIL CHEDDAR from Kenny's, and a yet to be revealed cheese from Stone Cross Farm.  ARTISAN BREADS from Sunrise Bakery to accompany any meal (great, for dipping in olive oil and balsamic), plus delicious PASTRIES,  MUFFINS and GARLIC BAGELS for breakfasts.  For a quick and easy pizza, start with our Garlic-Topped FOCACCIA and add your favorite toppings, then heat in the oven or on the grill!
Last week we are introducing our first TEA.  We call it Blue Moon Farm Sunday Tea, as it's a tradition here every Sunday.  It's a blend of herbs and tea, and is as delicious and relaxing as it's aroma suggests!
Our own knock-your-socks-off GARLIC POWDER and SMOKED GARLIC POWDER, PEPPER POWDERS, CHAMPAGNE DRESSING and sauces and spices from Bourbon Barrel Foods....Soy Sauce, Worcestershire Sauce and perfect for grilling....Kentuckyaki Sauce.  Vanilla aged in bourbon barrels, and Salt, pepper and paprika smoked over the staves of bourbon barrels!

TRIPLE J FARM

Triple J Farm will be selling our pasture raised, grain finished beef this Saturday at the market, with a large selection of cuts available, feel free to pre order!!! Also, we will be selling our farm fresh, free range eggs. In addition, we will have a wide variety of culinary potted herb plants available to start those herb gardens.

We will also be selling our farms compost to help get those gardens and flowers looking fabulous!

We hope to see you all on Saturday!!!

QUARLES FARM
Shelby County

Another week of harvesting hay has passed and there's still acres of hay yet to roll and bring to the house. We're pickling beets and yellow squash and should be making zucchini relish in the next week or so. Pickling cucumbers are about 2 inches long and will soon be picked and put in the jar. Summer is in full swing at Quarles Farm and it waits for none of us.

We hope your Fourth of July celebrations were fantastic and we sincerely thank those of you who served our beef and other items to your family and friends. Without you there would be no need for us to be at a market with our goods. With the Fourth, we usually think of grilled foods and cold salads but

there are also ways to eat comfort foods in hot weather without having to heat up the kitchen. Take one of our chuck roasts and crank up the crock pot. You can have roast, potatoes and carrots when you get home from work without loosing your cool. And the next day you can cut up pieces of the left over roast for a nice salad with roast cubes in it. Or maybe a nice roast beef sandwich with a cool fresh vine ripened tomato, a nice bit of cheese and come crisp lettuce. You can get all of that, plus a nice loaf of sourdough bread at the market.

Daylilies are still in full bloom at the farm. The field is ablaze with color and the late bloomers are starting to pop open. Come on out to 9548 Waddy Road, Waddy, KY and see what we've got. We can guarantee that we have a better selection than any garden center in the area. Visit us at quarlesfarm.com or quarlesdaylilies.com to see some of the pictures or friend us on Facebook to see what we're doing on a weekly basis.

We'll be at Cheapside on Saturday and Southland on Sunday with a freezer full of beef and a table full of breads, canned goods and vegetables. Come by and try us out. Remember, we're eating the same food at our dinner table that we select to take to market. If it doesn't taste good we don't want it and we don't want to sell it to you!

BLUEGRASS CHEVRE

Fayette/Clark County

We'll have lots of cheeses this week, and have been getting requests and recipe ideas for pimento cheese with fresh chevre. So, we're going to give it a try.  Come by for a taste and tell us what you think.

The blackberry sorbetto was a big hit last week, so we'll definitely have it again.  Look for our big blackboard which finally came yesterday, after a week-long delay in shipping.

Don't forget to get your Farm Tour tickets ... We'll be on it and we have more goats than ever, more fabulous "white goats" coming this month from a farm dispersal sale, plus some really adorable bottle babies.  You might say we've gone wild with goats!

Cheers!

Boone Creek Creamery

Handmade Artisan Cheese

Boy are we glad that Spring is finally here, and we're excited to introduce our handmade cheeses to the Lexington Farmer's Market. This week we will have several cheeses available but be sure you check out our traditional Amish Cup Cheeses and our bourbon infused Kentucky Derby.

Boone Creek Creamery specializes in Old World cheeses that are often difficult to find - wonderful cheeses like Lancashire, Stilton, Cheshire, Wensleydale, Pyrenees, Cantal, or Beaufort. Of course we've added our own touch to create some new classics like our Ginger Stilton, Tuscan Sun, Abbey Road, and our exclusive Coffee Gouda.

You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment in our micro-creamery. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree.

Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite dairy farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy.

We also offer cheese making classes, supplies, and equipment. For details, call or visit our website.
