The Lexington Farmers' Market  April 13, 2011

What an incredible opening weekend of market! Despite Saturday's rainstorm, there was such a great turnout. A special thanks to everyone who was able to come by on Saturday or Sunday, and to those who couldn't make it-come see what's in store this weekend! It was wonderful to catch up with familiar faces and meet many new ones as well. Our members brought such a beautiful variety of lettuce, spinach, kale, collards, and green garlic as well as hydroponic tomatoes AND cucumbers, fresh local eggs, delicious breads, cheese, honey, spring lamb, beef, pork and seafood. And not to mention, there were enough herb transplants to keep a garden happy all summer long! What's even more exciting is all of the new produce that is coming into season every week, bringing more and more of our vendors to the market.

Lexington's annual Earthdays in the Bluegrass Celebration is hitting the ground running all throughout the month of April.  The LFM is absolutely thrilled to be apart of the festivities, because what better way is there to celebrate the land we're living on than to eat local food?  You can check out all of their events here to find out how you can get involved!

PS: Today's sunny weather has put picnics on my mind! This week's recipe is a little twist on your ordinary potato salad-it's wonderfully simple AND you can find every single ingredient at the market!

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

Community Supported Agriculture offers farm-fresh food for Kentucky consumers

Thursday, March 31, 2011

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Even as spring is struggling to take hold in Kentucky, time is running out for Kentuckians to sign up for a steady supply of local food in the 2011 growing season through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).

"A CSA gives consumers a chance to participate directly in the food production process," Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer said. "Consumers get fresh fruits, vegetables and other products right off the farm. They also get to get to know the people who produce the food they serve to their families."

In a typical CSA, members pay the farmer in advance for a weekly share of the farm's harvest. Members get farm-fresh foods directly from the producer but also share the risk that the crop could suffer because of weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Along with spreading some of the risk of farming, the producer is relieved of much of the burden of marketing and gets a better price for his or her products.

Most CSAs offer a variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs in season. Some provide shares in eggs, meat, milk, baked goods, and even firewood. CSAs vary according to the level of financial commitment, active participation by the shareholders, and details of payment plans and distribution systems.

The number of CSAs in Kentucky and in the United States has grown dramatically in recent years. The U.S. Department of Agriculture found in 2007 that 12,549 farms throughout the country reported marketing products through a CSA arrangement. Fifty-two Kentucky CSAs are registered with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, up from 10 in 2009.

A list of CSAs in Kentucky with available foods and contact information can be found on the Department website at www.kyagr.com/marketing/plantmktg/csa.htm.

HERE'S A BIT OF WHAT YOU'LL FIND AT THE MARKET THIS WEEK...

Boone Creek Creamery
Handmade Artisan Cheese

Boy are we glad that Spring is finally here, and we're excited to introduce our handmade cheeses to the Lexington Farmer's Market. This week we will have several cheeses available but be sure you check out our traditional Amish Cup Cheeses and our bourbon infused Kentucky Derby.

Boone Creek Creamery specializes in Old World cheeses that are often difficult to find - wonderful cheeses like Lancashire, Stilton, Cheshire, Wensleydale, Pyrenees, Cantal, or Beaufort. Of course we've added our own touch to create some new classics like our Ginger Stilton, Tuscan Sun, Abbey Road, and our exclusive Coffee Gouda.

You won't see hydraulic presses and fancy modern equipment in our micro-creamery. Instead, we make our cheeses by hand using traditional European techniques to protect the delicate curds. This is a lot more work and very time consuming, but we believe it creates better cheeses with rich complex flavors. We hope you agree.

Our cheese is made from all natural JD Country Milk, a family owned Mennonite dairy farm in Logan County. The cows are pasture grazed and never given any antibiotics or hormones. Instead they are fed a vitamin enriched diet and all the grass they can eat. The milk is not homogenized and is pasteurized at just 145 degrees, then quickly cooled to preserve the natural flavor and enzymes that Mother Nature intended. We think the milk tastes better because the cows are happy.

We also offer cheese making classes, supplies, and equipment. For details, call or visit our website.

BLUE MOON FARM***Sustainably Grown***

Madison County

What an interesting start to the 2011 market season!  Last Saturday morning was perfect but before we got all packed up and out of there around 2 we were drenched!  That was quite a storm!!  It really cleared things out for a beautiful Sunday, though, so all in all a pretty good beginning!  The rain this week was scary, but we just checked the river a few minutes ago (Wed. AM) and it looks like it has gone down some already, so our river bottom gardens are safe for the moment!  Phew!

This Saturday find us again, between 7:30 AM and 2:30PM on Short Street behind the Lexington History Museum.  Sunday in front of Goodyear on Southland Drive, 10AM til 2PM.   BABY GREEN GARLIC....... remember how yummy it is??  We'll have our recipe sheet to give you ideas of how to use it, but you don't need a recipe!  Just chop into any place you would use onion or garlic....salads, soups, stews, sauces.  Saute some in olive oil to top your burger or steak, or your cheese sandwich!!

Horseshoe Bend Mushrooms in Bracken Co. will stock us up with their beautiful fresh OYSTER MUSHROOMS which would be great in the green garlic saute!

Personally, I am very much looking forward to getting my hands on a GARLIC BAGEL, warm from the ovens at Sunrise Bakery.....the stash in our freezer has been gone a long time!

We'll also be bringing GARLIC SCAPE PESTO, our own "knock-your-socks-off" GARLIC POWDER, regular and SMOKED (by LFM's own Chef Jacob of Cookin' Up KY).  Stone Cross Farm's terrific PORK in all shapes and sizes, Colcord Farm's Grass Finished BEEF, Kenny's Farmhouse CHEESES (a couple of new ones, too!), Sunrise Bakery's ARTISAN BREADS and PASTRIES (Mmmmm..CINNAMON BUNS), Bourbon Barrel Foods  SOY, WORCESTERSHIRE and KENTUCKYAKI sauces,  Bourbon Smoked Salt, Pepper and Paprika, and more!  And don't forget the lovely handmade SOAPS from Stone Cross Farm.

We'll start bringing HERB SETS as the weather allows....if there's anything you're especially looking for and would like to reserve, please drop us a line and we'll be glad to put an order together for you!

We heard a lot of different stories last week about your winter, and the consensus is that it was WAY too long!!  :-)

We've been delighted with the growth in Facebook friends over the winter,  Check it out, and "like" us to get updates when we post!  www.facebook.com/bluemoongarlic

See you this weekend!!

BLEUGRASS CHEVRE

Fayette/Clark County

We'll be at the Saturday market for sure, and the Sunday market unless the weather is severe.  Derby Day is just around the corner, and we have been thinking about how Kentucky absolutely struts during this beautiful season.  All of our old traditional recipes are celebrated, and that means it's time to make a big batch of olive nut chevre.  Our bourbon smoked pepper chevre is gaining on garlic-chive as a favorite, and we'll be making our sundried tomato tortas this week, as well. Come by and sample all three.

We get so many good recipe ideas from our customers, and this week's suggestion is simple yet sumptuous.  Spread foccaccia or a baguette sliced horizontally with our fresh chevre, then cover with a layer of Blue Moon's garlic-scape pesto, and top with chopped sundried tomatoes.  Bake in a 400 degree oven until slightly bubbly or put under the broiler for several minutes.  You can also throw on a handful of arugula or any spring salad greens just before serving.

Cheers,

Susan and the gourmetgoats@msn.com

The 2011 season for the outdoor Lexington Farmer's Market is in full operation. On Saturday April 16th we will be downtown at Cheapside Park and on Sunday April 17 we will be on Southland Drive.  We will be at both markets unless it rains, so come on out and replenish your local honey and pollen supplies.

You may also call to make an appointment to look at Bev's candle selection.

Out home is located one block north (toward downtown) of the intersection of Southland Drive and Nicholasville Road. Turn on Goodrich Avenue and take the first driveway on your right, and you will be in our back yard. There will be a silver travel trailer (Airstream) under an awning directly in front of you. Your honey will be on the back porch. If we are not home, just leave the money on the counter.  There is change in a small jar on the counter if you need some.

Abigail's Honey

Here we are again, enjoying the opening of the Lexington Farmers' Market which heralds in the Kentucky Spring.  I will be having lots of surprises for you this summer.

HONEY - The bees are very busy now.  We only lost one hive so far.  A beekeeper usually loses 30% of their hives per year, but so far all the girls are strong and healthy.  They are busy pollinating pear, plum, apple, cherry trees as well as dandelions, henbit and wild violets.  My yard is covered with violets and the purple is beautiful against the green.  I am just patiently waiting for the Black Locust Trees to have their blossoms so we can have more of that wonderful honey.

I do have some CLOVER AND WILDFLOWER honey.  Come get while it lasts.

SOAPS - I have lots of Lavender and other varieties waiting for you as well as my moisturizing balms.

MY NEW MYSTERY - "DEATH BY DROWNING" will make its official signing at Morris Book Shop (408 Southland Dr) on Sunday from noon to 2pm.  So if you are at the Southland  Farmers' Market location on Sunday, stop by my booth (some friends will be watching it for me) and then come visit me at the Morris Book Shop from noon to 2pm.  I will be signing my new Josiah Reynolds mystery novel and reading at 1pm.  See reviews of the book in the Chevy Chaser, South Sider and Business Lexington.
