The Lexington Farmers' Market  March 17, 2011
From the perspective of a warm afternoon, it is hard to believe this is that last full week of winter.  The fields are green, the bugs are buzzing and the true warmth of summer is fully on the way.  I spent some time last evening clearing out the debris from last year's garden, pulling newly growing weeds and planting a few lettuce, spinach and carrot seeds.  Not much ground is required for such a venture and I would encourage everyone to roll up your sleeves, if you are even wearing any, and get a little dirt under your nails.  I admit that the work and the anticipation of a harvest are rewarding in and of themselves, but will be magnified if food items really do grow and make it to my table.

All the best and please continue to join us at our winter market this Saturday and please continue to look forward to our return outdoors on Saturday, April 9th and Sunday, April 10th.

Thank you.

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

If you want a better quality of life for all of us, please join The Fayette Alliance today for free.  Visit www.fayettealliance.com for more information.

INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

2011 NEWS FLASH AND SPECIAL EVENTS

NEWS FLASH...

USDA Highlights Nearly 900 Operating Winter Farmers Markets; Many Markets Located in Cold-Weather States

WASHINGTON, Dec. 8, 2010 - With winter on its way, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced today that its National Farmers Market Directory lists 898 winter farmers markets across the country, accounting for more than 14 percent of the nation's 6,132 operating farmers markets and extending opportunities for consumers to access locally grown food.

"Fresh, local, and healthful food isn't just a good weather offering," said David Shipman, Acting Administrator of USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service. "Clearly in many places, winter markets are hot despite the cold weather. Even in states where the traditional growing season is short, the market season is long. This allows more small and local farmers to continue bringing in income for their families and their businesses, while also providing great, nutritious food to communities year round."

Farmers markets are considered winter farmers markets if they operate between November and March. The top 11 states for these markets are: New York (153), California (140), North Carolina (53), Florida (45), Pennsylvania (42), Ohio (34), Massachusetts (32), Kentucky (30), New Jersey (24), Connecticut (20), and Michigan (20).

The last time USDA released a count of winter farmers markets was in 2009 as part of the agency's National Farmers Market Manager Survey. Since then, winter markets have grown 17 percent. Results from that same survey indicate that farmers markets operating more than seven months per year have higher monthly sales than their strictly seasonal counterparts.

In August 2010 USDA's National Farmers Market Directory listed 6,132 operating farmers markets overall, a 16 percent rise from 2009. The National Farmers Market Directory has been collecting self-reported information about farmers markets since 1994.

OF NOTE...

Between June 17 and November 20, 2010, Faith Feeds collected approximately 37,500 pounds of fresh food.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry.  Forty (40) volunteers gave of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.

PARKING is always FREE at all of our markets if you know where to look!

On Saturday it's as easy as parking in the Victorian Square Garage across Broadway from Victorian Square Plaza and asking one of the vendors to validate your ticket. Beyond that garage, all street parking is free on Saturdays and there are also several pay lots in the area.

Finally, if you have ever lost items at any of our markets and they have not been returned, please check with Jeff, the market manager, during market hours or by phone at (859) 608-2655.

HERE'S A BIT OF WHAT YOU'LL FIND AT THE MARKET THIS WEEK...

BLUE MOON FARM*** Sustainably Grown***

Madison County

Elvis sang..."Kentucky rain keeps pouring down"......boy, it was a frog choker here for a while on Tuesday!  A few minutes after it stopped, the sun was out brilliantly and the sky towards Lexington and Winchester were dark as night!  A little heat, and the grass in the yard is going to go crazy!

The baby lettuces, kale, cilantro, fennel, and pea shoots (not to mention the garlic!) are just waiting for the 70 degree day they're promising us at the end of the week!   I hope they were holding on through the downpour today, otherwise they could be on their way to the Mississippi!

The first market of the year is coming at us like a freight train at this point....3 weeks from Saturday and Sunday....April 9th and 10th.  We can't wait to see you all again, and see how you fared through the long winter!

We're seeing lots of tiny calves in the fields on Poosey Ridge these days.  Some born so recently their legs are still wobbly!  Cute!  Lots of other animals have started moving around too, and we came home to find a possum on the front porch the other day.  Apparently the dogs (in the house) heard, smelled or sensed that he was there, because we walked in to find destruction!  A beautiful big Christmas cactus which has been in Jean's life for almost 40 years was pushed off the plant bench in the front window and smashed on the floor, and the enormous jade plant beside it had been trampled!  No point in yelling at the dogs by then, so we just cleaned it up and tried to salvage what we could.  Leo says the cactus has needed re-potting for a long time anyway.....that's putting the best face on it!

We hope you all are enjoying daffodils and crocuses in your yards (or the yards of others!) as spring begins to show itself to us.

Our Garlic Scape Pesto will soon be on the menu at the Boone Tavern in Berea to season a side in a lamb special.  It will also be featured in an aioli at a new Richmond restaurant called "The Grind", on Main St.  They will be grinding Stone Cross Farm beef to make their burgers too!  We hope you'll stop by and try them out if you're ever in Richmond!

That's all for now....the countdown begins!

See you soon!
