The Lexington Farmers' Market  February 9, 2011

This time of year marks the return of many seed and gardening catalogues and their often unrequested delivery to our doorsteps.  And, while there are plenty of cold winter weeks for amateur gardeners to ponder what we might plant this year, and even more weeks to have the seeds delivered, our farmers have ordered and received the bulk of their seeds and are busily deciding how to best use them this year.  Whether they are good planners, whether they want a competitive edge over their competition, or whether they experienced a shortage or absence of desired seeds last year, they are always adapting, looking to improve and looking forward to another opportunity to bring forth food from the soil in the coming season.

 

So, as we wrap up the last month of winter, please know that our market is currently going strong every Saturday from 8am to 1pm and that we are making daily preparations to slowly build toward April 9th, when we return outdoors.

Ham and Potato Soup

Serves:  8

 

Ingredients

    

ˇ         3 1/2 cups peeled and diced potatoes

ˇ         1/3 cup diced celery

ˇ         1/3 cup finely chopped onion

ˇ         3/4 cup diced cooked ham

ˇ         3 1/4 cups water

ˇ         2 tablespoons chicken bouillon granules

ˇ         1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste

ˇ         1 teaspoon ground white or black pepper, or to taste

ˇ         5 tablespoons butter

ˇ         5 tablespoons all-purpose flour

ˇ         2 cups milk

 

Directions

1.     Combine the potatoes, celery, onion, ham and water in a stockpot. Bring to a boil, then cook over medium heat until potatoes are tender, about 10 to 15 minutes. Stir in the chicken bouillon, salt and pepper.

2.     In a separate saucepan, melt butter over medium-low heat. Whisk in flour with a fork, and cook, stirring constantly until thick, about 1 minute. Slowly stir in milk as not to allow lumps to form until all of the milk has been added. Continue stirring over medium-low heat until thick, 4 to 5 minutes.

3.     Stir the milk mixture into the stockpot, and cook soup until heated through. Serve immediately.

USDA Highlights Nearly 900 Operating Winter Farmers Markets; Many Markets Located in Cold-Weather States    

WASHINGTON, Dec. 8, 2010 - With winter on its way, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced today that its National Farmers Market Directory lists 898 winter farmers markets across the country, accounting for more than 14 percent of the nation's 6,132 operating farmers markets and extending opportunities for consumers to access locally grown food.   

"Fresh, local, and healthful food isn't just a good weather offering," said David Shipman, Acting Administrator of USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service. "Clearly in many places, winter markets are hot despite the cold weather. Even in states where the traditional growing season is short, the market season is long. This allows more small and local farmers to continue bringing in income for their families and their businesses, while also providing great, nutritious food to communities year round."

 

Farmers markets are considered winter farmers markets if they operate between November and March. The top 11 states for these markets are: New York (153), California (140), North Carolina (53), Florida (45), Pennsylvania (42), Ohio (34), Massachusetts (32), Kentucky (30), New Jersey (24), Connecticut (20), and Michigan (20).

 

The last time USDA released a count of winter farmers markets was in 2009 as part of the agency's National Farmers Market Manager Survey. Since then, winter markets have grown 17 percent. Results from that same survey indicate that farmers markets operating more than seven months per year have higher monthly sales than their strictly seasonal counterparts.

 

In August 2010 USDA's National Farmers Market Directory listed 6,132 operating farmers markets overall, a 16 percent rise from 2009. The National Farmers Market Directory has been collecting self-reported information about farmers markets since 1994.

OF NOTE...

Between June 17 and November 20, 2010, Faith Feeds collected approximately 37,500 pounds of fresh food.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry.  Forty (40) volunteers gave of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.

 

 

PARKING is always FREE at all of our markets if you know where to look! 

On Saturday it's as easy as parking in the Victorian Square Garage across Broadway from Victorian Square Plaza and asking one of the vendors to validate your ticket. Beyond that garage, all street parking is free on Saturdays and there are also several pay lots in the area.
