The Lexington Farmers' Market

January 26, 2011

Beyond the challenges provided by the weather routine, the end of this week looks to be a busy one for the Lexington Farmers' Market.  Please find information below about tomorrow's open house event in support of the Chrysalis House and come out and lend your support for their efforts.  Then, start planning your Friday appearance at WUKY's annual Heard it Through the Grapevine where you will find me talking about the market and offering samples of Shepherd's Pie featuring our members' ingredients, exquisitely prepared by chefs and students of Sullivan University.  Then, as always, Saturday will feature our indoor, winter market.

Please join us for any and all of these events and help us support those that do so much in the Lexington community.

Sincerely,

Jeff Dabbelt

Lexington Farmers' Market Manager

In the fall of 2010, the Midway SIFE team applied for and received a $1000 grant from Sam's Club, a SIFE USA partner. David Vancleeck, general manager for Sam's Club Lexington Store #8188 feels that the project dovetails nicely with his company's mission, "It goes well with our concept at Wal-Mart in trying to be green in our goal of zero waste. Sustainability is still a growing thing amongst us."  In addition to the $1000 grant provided by Sam's Club, they have provided a staff manager to act as project mentor as well - Membership Assistant Manager, Sherry Hampton.  Vancleeck supported Hampton's participation with reinforcement of the importance of sustainability in moving forward "so that we can all continue to grow together and have a better life amongst us all."

Lisa Minton, Chrysalis House Executive Director was on-hand to offer her gratitude for the Midway SIFE team and Sam's Club partnership. "Chrysalis House is delighted to have been chosen for this project.  It will benefit the Chrysalis House facilities, as well as our women and children as they move into their own homes.  On behalf of the Chrysalis House Board of Directors, staff, and clients, thank you."

As I am coming off of a bout with the flu, I thought I'd search for what might have helped me and this recipe sounds about right.

The Soup Cure:  Onion & Garlic Soup

Ingredients

ˇ         3 large onions

ˇ         3 cloves of garlic

ˇ         1 sprig of fresh parsley finely chopped

ˇ         4 cups of filtered water

Method

Chop the onions and garlic into small pieces. Or alternatively liquidize them.

Bring a stainless steel saucepan with 4 cups of filtered water to the boil and then add the chopped onions and garlic and the parsley to the saucepan and bring to the boil.

Reduce the heat to a simmer, cover the saucepan and then let it simmer for 15 minutes. Until the onions have cooked until they are very soft.

Serve it either as is or liquidize with a thickening agent for a creamy soup.

Thickening Agent

Add 1 tablespoon of chick pea flour and whisk it up in 2 tablespoons of filtered water.

Add to the soup and stir, until the desired thickness is obtained, then simmer for 5 minutes.

Serving Instructions for Getting the full Healing Process of this Soup

Climb into bed and keep well covered, drink the soup while hot, keep the remainder of the soup warm until later.

The soup will cause your body temperature to rise, so expect some sweating, remain well covered and rest.

Try and have another serving about 15 minutes after finishing your 1st serving.

Here is to your health.

A final note

This Onion Soup with the thickening is also a good starter for a normal winter family meal - try it.

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

If you want a better quality of life for all of us, please join The Fayette Alliance today for free.  Visit www.fayettealliance.com for more information.

INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

NEWS FLASH AND SPECIAL EVENTS

NEWS FLASH...

USDA Highlights Nearly 900 Operating Winter Farmers Markets; Many Markets Located in Cold-Weather States

WASHINGTON, Dec. 8, 2010 - With winter on its way, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced today that its National Farmers Market Directory lists 898 winter farmers markets across the country, accounting for more than 14 percent of the nation's 6,132 operating farmers markets and extending opportunities for consumers to access locally grown food.

"Fresh, local, and healthful food isn't just a good weather offering," said David Shipman, Acting Administrator of USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service. "Clearly in many places, winter markets are hot despite the cold weather. Even in states where the traditional growing season is short, the market season is long. This allows more small and local farmers to continue bringing in income for their families and their businesses, while also providing great, nutritious food to communities year round."

Farmers markets are considered winter farmers markets if they operate between November and March. The top 11 states for these markets are: New York (153), California (140), North Carolina (53), Florida (45), Pennsylvania (42), Ohio (34), Massachusetts (32), Kentucky (30), New Jersey (24), Connecticut (20), and Michigan (20).

The last time USDA released a count of winter farmers markets was in 2009 as part of the agency's National Farmers Market Manager Survey. Since then, winter markets have grown 17 percent. Results from that same survey indicate that farmers markets operating more than seven months per year have higher monthly sales than their strictly seasonal counterparts.

In August 2010 USDA's National Farmers Market Directory listed 6,132 operating farmers markets overall, a 16 percent rise from 2009. The National Farmers Market Directory has been collecting self-reported information about farmers markets since 1994.

OF NOTE...

Between June 17 and November 20, Faith Feeds collected approximately 37,500 pounds of fresh food.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry.  Forty (40) volunteers gave of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.

PARKING is always FREE at all of our markets if you know where to look!

On Saturday it's as easy as parking in the Victorian Square Garage across Broadway from Victorian Square Plaza and asking one of the vendors to validate your ticket. Beyond that garage, all street parking is free on Saturdays and there are also several pay lots in the area.

Finally, if you have ever lost items at any of our markets and they have not been returned, please check with Jeff, the market manager, during market hours or by phone at (859) 608-2655.
