The Lexington Farmers' Market
December 22,  2010

...The market was nestled all snug in its bed,
Returning in two weeks and knowing spring is ahead.

Sorry, given the season that just jumped onto the page and I knew better than to keep going.  However, I hope you'll note that we will be closed the next two Saturdays (preceding newsletters too) and will return to business in Victorian Square on January 8, 2011.

While there are more thanks than I can take time to offer, I'll take a moment to briefly thank our now former Assistant Manager, Sarah Buzogany, for a job tremendously well done.  Thanks also to our many members, sponsors and loyal customers, we have had a great year and could not have done it without ALL of you.  Please enjoy the holiday season and know that we look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Warm wishes,

Jeff Dabbelt

Lexington Farmers' Market Manager

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

If you want a better quality of life for all of us, please join The Fayette Alliance today for free.  Visit www.fayettealliance.com for more information.

INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

NEWS FLASH AND SPECIAL EVENTS

NEWS FLASH...

USDA Highlights Nearly 900 Operating Winter Farmers Markets; Many Markets Located in Cold-Weather States

WASHINGTON, Dec. 8, 2010 - With winter on its way, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced today that its National Farmers Market Directory lists 898 winter farmers markets across the country, accounting for more than 14 percent of the nation's 6,132 operating farmers markets and extending opportunities for consumers to access locally grown food.

"Fresh, local, and healthful food isn't just a good weather offering," said David Shipman, Acting Administrator of USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service. "Clearly in many places, winter markets are hot despite the cold weather. Even in states where the traditional growing season is short, the market season is long. This allows more small and local farmers to continue bringing in income for their families and their businesses, while also providing great, nutritious food to communities year round."

Farmers markets are considered winter farmers markets if they operate between November and March. The top 11 states for these markets are: New York (153), California (140), North Carolina (53), Florida (45), Pennsylvania (42), Ohio (34), Massachusetts (32), Kentucky (30), New Jersey (24), Connecticut (20), and Michigan (20).

The last time USDA released a count of winter farmers markets was in 2009 as part of the agency's National Farmers Market Manager Survey. Since then, winter markets have grown 17 percent. Results from that same survey indicate that farmers markets operating more than seven months per year have higher monthly sales than their strictly seasonal counterparts.

In August 2010 USDA's National Farmers Market Directory listed 6,132 operating farmers markets overall, a 16 percent rise from 2009. The National Farmers Market Directory has been collecting self-reported information about farmers markets since 1994.

OF NOTE...

Between June 17 and November 20, Faith Feeds collected approximately 37,500 pounds of fresh food.  The food was donated to 14 emergency food agencies, faith ministries and others that feed the poor and hungry.  Forty (40) volunteers gave of their time and energy to make all this possible. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Faith Feed organizers.

BLUE MOON FARM ***Sustainably Grown***

Madison County

Wow!   What a winter so far....and it isn't even winter yet!!   Garlic planting has been shut down by frigid temperatures, but we are thankful for the snow cover insulating the already planted cloves!  We are spending our days doing mid-winter chores, like looking through seed catalogs and planning next year's garden.  Nothing like looking at the gorgeous photos of all the different vegetables and flowers to brighten a dreary Arctic day!  Christmas shopping and shipping to far-flung family is done, and the next few days will find us braving the cold to hunt for a Christmas tree somewhere on the hills of our farm.

It has been lovely to get long awaited rest!  We've almost forgotten the weariness of September and October at this point.   We're feeling a little like hibernating bears!

We miss seeing you all, and send our very best wishes for Chanukah, Solstice, Christmas, Kwanza, and New Years!  We hope you are warm, happy and healthy.

Drop us a line!  We can still do special orders for you.  Join us on Facebook www.facebook.com/bluemoongarlic or visit our website www.bluemoongarlic.com to stay in touch
