As our outdoor season draws to a close, we at the Lexington Farmers' Market can reflect on all the things we have to be thankful for. While dry at times, the weather this year produced a very unique overlap of seasonality and most produce was abundant. The new pavilion at Cheapside has brought a new dimension to the Saturday markets, and Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays created opportunities to shop all through the week and all across town. We've had a really spectacular showing of customer commitment with lots of returning customers and many new faces. Thank you for your continued support and we hope you have a safe, bountiful, delicious Thanksgiving!

 

Don't forget- this Saturday our LAST OUTDOOR MARKET! There will be a handful of vendors present with a nice range of products offered. Next week we will move indoors to Victorian Square Plaza on December 4th and remain there every Saturday, December 4th-April 2nd (excluding Christmas and New Years Day).

WEEKLY RECIPE

Earthy Mashed Potatoes

yield: Makes 4 servings

active time: 15 min

total time: 1 1/2 hr

Ingredients

  • 2 lb large potatoes (any kind)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 stick (1/4 cup) unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper

 

  • Special equipment: a potato ricer

Preparation

Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 425°F.

Wrap each potato in foil, then prick potatoes through foil several times with a fork. Bake potatoes until tender, 1 to 1 1/4 hours.

Heat milk, butter, salt, and white pepper in a 3-quart heavy saucepan over moderate heat until butter is melted.

While milk mixture heats, unwrap baked potatoes and, while still hot (use a kitchen towel to protect your hands or hold potatoes with tongs), pull off skin with a paring knife or halve unpeeled potatoes and scoop out flesh with a spoon, transferring it to a bowl. Discard skin.

Force hot potatoes through ricer into hot milk mixture in pan and gently stir with a large heatproof rubber spatula just until combined.

Cooks' note: Mashed potatoes are best served immediately but can be made 1 day ahead. Reheat, covered, in a heavy saucepan over low heat with 1/4 cup additional milk, stirring after potatoes are warm, until heated through; or in a baking dish, covered, in a moderate oven; or in a microwave, stirring halfway through heating, about 2 minutes total.

WUKY BECOMES LEXINGTON'S REPRESENTATIVE FOR STORYCORPS' 2010 NATIONAL DAY OF LISTENING

Lexington residents to share and record holiday memories and stories on the day after Thanksgiving

 

On Friday, November 26, 2010, WUKY will represent Lexington in the third annual National Day of Listening, a national holiday started by the acclaimed oral history nonprofit organization StoryCorps in 2008. The National Day of Listening is an effort to encourage all Americans to honor a friend, a loved one, or a member of their community by interviewing them about their lives.

 

National Day of Listening participants are encouraged to record their National Day of Listening interviews using equipment that is readily available in most homes-from cell phones to tape recorders to computers or even pen and paper. StoryCorps has created a free Do-It-Yourself interview guide with equipment recommendations and interview instructions available online at www.nationaldayoflistening.org.

 

WUKY will be partnering with the Lexington Public Library and taking part in the 2010 National Day of Listening. Interviews with individuals will be recorded at the Northside Branch Library on Russell Cave Road just off of New Circle Road. November is Good Nutrition Month

PARKING is always FREE at all of our markets if you know where to look!  On Saturday it's as easy as parking in the Financial Center Garage (#8 on the map) across the street from Cheapside Park and next to the blue 5/3 building. This lot is generously provided to us by Central Parking and for this we are extremely grateful.  Beyond that garage, all street parking is free on Saturdays and there are also several pay lots in the area.

Hello everyone.  Well, we have had two litters in the last week and one is probably being born right now! We have 16 new piglets with several more on the way.

 

We are out of bacon and probably will be until Christmas.   Last Saturday was a good day for us and we appreciate your continued support.  We will also be moving to Victorian Square after the outside Market closes, so come see us.  We plan to be there December 4 and 18.

I promised you all the recipe for our delicious Cranberry Sauce before Thanksgiving, so here it is!

Blue Moon Farm's "Not Your Average" Cranberry Sauce

Into a medium saucepan put:

1 Bag Fresh Cranberries, washed and drained

1 Cup Water

1/2 Cup Honey

1 Large Apple or Pear, peeled, cored and cut into cubes

1 Medium Jalapeno Pepper (Optional), finely minced

        (you can remove seeds first for a little less heat!)

1-2 Cloves Blue Moon Farm Garlic, minced

1/2 to 3/4 inch Freshly Grated Ginger Root

Bring to a boil, then simmer until cranberries pop.

Serve warm or cold.

It's so easy to make!!  We use it all year 'round with chicken, turkey or pork.  We hope you will try it, and we know you'll enjoy it!

Elmwood is taking the Saturday after Thanksgiving off, but then we will move indoors for the Victorian Square market.

 

PRODUCE we are featuring several types of Lettuce Heads including butterhead, red leaf, green romaine, and buttercrunch.  Other items include Purple Top White Turnips, Golden Turnips, Spanish Black Radishes, Watermelon or Beauty Heart Radishes, Daikon, Bok Choy, Kohlrabi, Swiss Chard, Lacinato Kale, Mustard Greens, Tatsoi, Curly Kale Greens, Salad Mix and more.  All certified organic and tasty sweet after several frosts.

 

Other crops include Sweet Potatoes, Red Onions, Yellow Onions, Garlic and fresh cut Herbs, all certified organic.

 

MEATS our inventory of grassfed Angus organic beef has been restocked, along with a full selection of certified organic hens and packs of cut-up chicken pieces ready to stock up your freezers for cold weather meals.

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass

 

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere. 

 

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.  

 

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.
