The Lexington Farmers' MarketNovember 17, 2010

This month has been a great chance to reflect on how loyal and dedicated so many of our customers are and how excited Lexington has become about good, wholesome, local food. November markets are always a little precarious weather-wise and it's been so encouraging to see customers bundled up early in the morning braving the cold alongside farmers and vendors so they can do business together. And a little later in the day, once it's warmed up a bit, we see the baby strollers and late rising customers venture out to make the most of the LFM outdoor season. This weekend looks to be lovely so make sure you come down to Cheapside Park on Saturday (or Broadway and Maxwell tomorrow or on Tuesday) to get all the delicious produce, meat, eggs, cheeses and more to make your Thanksgiving a local feast!

Don't forget- we're still OUTSIDE for two more SATURDAYS, the 20th and 27th as well as this THURSDAY and next TUESDAY. We will move indoors to Victorian Square Plaza December 4th and remain there every Saturday, December 4th-April 2nd (excluding Christmas and New Years Day).

WUKY BECOMES LEXINGTON'S REPRESENTATIVE FOR STORYCORPS' 2010 NATIONAL DAY OF LISTENING

Lexington residents to share and record holiday memories and stories on the day after Thanksgiving

On Friday, November 26, 2010, WUKY will represent Lexington in the third annual National Day of Listening, a national holiday started by the acclaimed oral history nonprofit organization StoryCorps in 2008. The National Day of Listening is an effort to encourage all Americans to honor a friend, a loved one, or a member of their community by interviewing them about their lives.

National Day of Listening participants are encouraged to record their National Day of Listening interviews using equipment that is readily available in most homes-from cell phones to tape recorders to computers or even pen and paper. StoryCorps has created a free Do-It-Yourself interview guide with equipment recommendations and interview instructions available online at www.nationaldayoflistening.org.

WUKY will be partnering with the Lexington Public Library and taking part in the 2010 National Day of Listening. Interviews with individuals will be recorded at the Northside Branch Library on Russell Cave Road just off of New Circle Road. Please schedule a recording session with Charles Watson by calling  859 231- 5590.

"The idea of listening during the holiday season has clearly resonated with people across the country," says StoryCorps founder and MacArthur "Genius" Dave Isay. "The National Day of Listening, which coincides with Black Friday-traditionally the largest shopping day of the year-provides a meaningful alternative to holiday consumerism and proves that simply listening to one another is the least expensive and most meaningful gift we can give."

WUKY General Manager, Tom Godell, said: "Recording holiday memories and stories is a great way to connect with family and friends and provide an oral history of your relationship with them for future generations. This also serves as the kick off our sponsorship of StoryCorps' upcoming visit to Lexington in May and June of 2011."

To see how more people across the country are celebrating this year's National Day of Listening, visit: www.nationaldayoflistening.org. The 2010 National Day of Listening is sponsored by the Fetzer Institute.

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

"FRESH LOCAL HONEY" by NICK and BEV NICKELS

Fayette County

We WILL at the Lexington Farmers' Market downtown on Saturday, November 20th. The Farmers' Market on at Southland Drive concluded Sunday, October 31st.

We offer the highest quality raw clover honey, pure beeswax candles and pollen.

Our delicious raw honey comes only from the fields and orchards surrounding Lexington, Kentucky. Our raw honey is unheated, and unprocessed so that all its attributes are fully preserved. Honeycomb in a jar with strained honey is also available.

Our candles are 100% unbleached, all natural beeswax. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. They contain no toxins or soot common to commercially produced paraffin candles. They are the candles of choice for those who have asthma, allergies, or headaches due to paraffin or scented candles. They are naturally fragrant with a subtle honey scent. They are made with filtered beeswax; so they produce a bright, clear, steady flame and beautiful illumination.

Bee pollen is nature's most complete food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and a complete source of protein. It can give us that extra edge to stay healthy. An all-around nutritional supplement, bee pollen is ideal for daily use. The bee pollen granules can be sprinkled over salad or cereal, added to liquids or eaten as is.

Then we head over to the Keeneland Holiday Market on Wednesday (11/24) , Friday (11/26), Saturday (11/27) & Sunday (11/28).  So if you are out and about with family and friends for the holiday, please stop by.

BLEUGRASS CHEVRE

Clark County

We hope to be at the market with cheese on Saturday, but it will be a very small batch.  A few of the bottle babies escaped from their pens over the weekend while I was gone, very cleverly located their mothers, and started nursing.  When I got home, all the little rascals had smiles on their faces, and were saying "Na-na-na-na na."  When I tried to put them back on bottles, they clamped their little mouths shut and refused the milk replacer.  Moral of the story is Never try to outsmart a goat, even it it's only three days old!  It's a good thing they are very, very cute.

We have many more does left to kid, but this episode is taking away about three gallons of milk a day that would have made a nice big batch of cheese for the weekend.

If you want to know for sure if we'll be at the market, give us a call on Friday at 859.421.6983.

We'll see you sometime soon!

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

Hello everyone.  What an effect a fast moving low front has.  Tuesday while feeding, I had 3 sows that were rooting out a nest instead of coming up to eat.  I had to call Clay and get him to come home from Berea to help me get them up into the barn because I was feeding by myself.  As of 7:00 this morning, two had started to farrow and the others look like they are close!

We should have a complete selection of our products this weekend.  Last Saturday was a good day for us and we appreciate your continued support.  We will also be moving to Victorian Square after the outside Market closes, so come see us.

Don't forget to look through our recipe collection and find just what you need for a meal in the coming weeks.  Of course our recipe collection is all about PORK!

We invite you to visit our website (which still needs updating) www.hillsideheritagefarm.com and also ask you to join us on Facebook.

This has been a great season and we have really enjoyed getting to know so many of you.

HAND BALMS

DON'T FORGET YOUR HANDS THIS WINTER.  Get my Lavender or Honeysuckle hand balms to protect your skin.  Also comes fragrance free.

FALL SOAP

It's time to stock up wood and do those last minute tasks before cold weather shows up.  The trees are showing color and fall is in full bloom.  Time for my Chocolate Amber Soap and Pumpkin Spice Soap which are great fall soaps. Just made a new batch of Mint Julep and Forest Green.  Also will have Sandalwood, Hyacinth, Supermoist, Oatmeal Body Scrub, the last of Spring Rain and Flowing River.

HONEY

I will have the last of the Comb Honey for this year at the Market.  It makes a great Thanksgiving Day treat or house gift.

When does honey go bad? I used to tell people - never, but have since learned that if a yeast spore gets into the honey - that will cause the honey to ferment.  Otherwise honey stays fresh for centuries - theoretically.

What to do when honey crystallizes - put jar on dashboard of car on sunny day and let the sun re-liquefy it.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!
