The Lexington Farmers' MarketNovember 10, 2010

The "off" season is a great time to think not just about eating, but about food in general. It's pretty easy to eat locally during the summer, but it can be a challenge to think about where your food comes from in the winter. Use this season to curl up with a great book about food policy, the ethics of eating, gardening, or cooking. Authors like Barbara Kingsolver and Michael Pollan have made bestsellers lists with their works about food. Popular media newspapers, blogs, and magazines are now filled with information about nutrition, food democracy, sustainable eating and DIY farming. The best way to find good information is to read a lot of it, so take time this winter to educate yourself on what you eat, and then share what you've learned over a nice hearty meal!

Don't forget- we're still outside until the LAST SATURDAY IN NOVEMBER, the 27th as well as TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS until Thanksgiving. We will move indoors to Victorian Square Plaza December 4th and remain there every Saturday, December 4th-April 2nd (excluding Christmas and New Years Day).

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

If you want a better quality of life for all of us, please join The Fayette Alliance today for free.  Visit www.fayettealliance.com for more information.

INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

NEWS FLASH AND SPECIAL EVENTS

NEWS FLASH...

November is Good Nutrition Month

Kentucky farmers grow and raise a wide variety of food commodities and food products that are part of a nutritious diet.   In this time of Thanksgiving, remember to thank at least one of Kentucky's 85,000 farm families for providing a healthy, abundant food supply.

SPECIAL EVENTS...

On Saturday the Friends of the Lexington Farmers' Market will be in attendance to sell market merchandise and answer questions. Central Baptist Hospital's cookbook Beyond The Fence will also be available for purchase at these tables.

PARKING is always FREE at all of our markets if you know where to look!  On Saturday it's as easy as parking in the Financial Center Garage (#8 on the map) across the street from Cheapside Park and next to the blue 5/3 building. This lot is generously provided to us by Central Parking and for this we are extremely grateful.  Beyond that garage, all street parking is free on Saturdays and there are also several pay lots in the area.

Finally, if you have ever lost items at any of our markets and they have not been returned, please check with Jeff, the market manager, during market hours or by phone at (859) 608-2655.

HERE'S A BIT OF WHAT YOU'LL FIND AT THE MARKET THIS WEEK...

"Baby, take a chance with me, baby, take a chance with me." the singer begged. "Not likely, mate," replied our Princess. It had been a wearying week already. Three horses at Churchill Downs vanquished, inferior cakes consumed, coldish autumn weather turning snowy and Jack having lost his ardor apparently, I'm ready to return to that airy, sensual, smoky, coffee-obsessed hide-away in Paris, on the Rue Jacob and forget my myself after a few bowls of CaffeMarco. Life provides much; I just wouldn't know it on my own.

HAND BALMS

DON'T FORGET YOUR HANDS THIS WINTER.  Get my Lavender or Honeysuckle hand balms to protect your skin.  Also comes fragrance free.

FALL SOAP

It's time to stock up wood and do those last minute tasks before cold weather shows up.  The trees are showing color and fall is in full bloom.  Time for my Chocolate Amber Soap and Pumpkin Spice Soap which are great fall soaps. Just made a new batch of Mint Julep and Forest Green.  Also will have Sandalwood, Hyacinth, Supermoist, Oatmeal Body Scrub, the last of Spring Rain and Flowing River.

HONEY

I will have the last of the Comb Honey for this year at the Market.  It makes a great Thanksgiving Day treat or house gift.

When does honey go bad? I used to tell people - never, but have since learned that if a yeast spore gets into the honey - that will cause the honey to ferment.  Otherwise honey stays fresh for centuries - theoretically.

What to do when honey crystallizes - put jar on dashboard of car on sunny day and let the sun re-liquefy it.

After the Market, come to Frankfort for the Kentucky Book Fair from 9am to 4pm in Frankfort.  I will be there signing books and my husband, Peter, will be manning my booth at the Farmer's Market.

See you at the Market this weekend.

"FRESH LOCAL HONEY" by NICK and BEV NICKELS

Fayette County

We WILL at the Lexington Farmers' Market downtown on Saturday, November 13th. The Farmers' Market on at Southland Drive concluded Sunday, October 31st.

We offer the highest quality raw clover honey, pure beeswax candles and pollen.

Our delicious raw honey comes only from the fields and orchards surrounding Lexington, Kentucky. Our raw honey is unheated, and unprocessed so that all its attributes are fully preserved. Honeycomb in a jar with strained honey is also available.

Our candles are 100% unbleached, all natural beeswax. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. They contain no toxins or soot common to commercially produced paraffin candles. They are the candles of choice for those who have asthma, allergies, or headaches due to paraffin or scented candles. They are naturally fragrant with a subtle honey scent. They are made with filtered beeswax; so they produce a bright, clear, steady flame and beautiful illumination.

Bee pollen is nature's most complete food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and a complete source of protein. It can give us that extra edge to stay healthy. An all-around nutritional supplement, bee pollen is ideal for daily use. The bee pollen granules can be sprinkled over salad or cereal, added to liquids or eaten as is.

Greetings!  It is a bittersweet moment, but we regret to inform you that our offerings for the year have been depleted.   We revel in the fact that our mouth watering produce arrived earlier and departed later than any other market season since we have participated, but this is it for us.  Thank you so much for all of your support and love in the historic 2010 Lexington Farmer's Market season.  We anxiously anticipate providing our pesticide free, 100% homegrown goodness to all of you in April of 2011.  Thanks for a great year and happy holidays!

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

Sorry for not being there last week.  Too many irons in the fire for the family!  We will be there this week with a full assortment of products  - Dorthy is going to Boones' today to pick up pigs I took two weeks ago.

We should have most everything this week, but we are low on bacon - so come early.   We are still selling lots of Brats and Italian Sausage for cooking on the grill, as well as a whole lot of pork chops.  As the weather cools, it seems that more of you are interested in Breakfast sausage - we have plenty.  Get something that you can cook in the crock pot so that you don't have to cook all day.  A Fresh Ham roast or Boston Butt roast cooked all day in the slow cooker makes great pulled Pork or the world's Best barbeque when you add your own special sauce!

Don't forget to look through our recipe collection and find just what you need for a meal in the coming weeks.  Of course our recipe collection is all about PORK!  If you find a recipe you like, we have copies we can give you.

We invite you to visit our website (which still needs updating) www.hillsideheritagefarm.com and also ask you to join us on Facebook.

This has been a great season and we have really enjoyed getting to know so many of you.

BlueMoon Farm ***Sustainably Grown***

Madison County

We would like to thank our friends and acquaintances at the Lexington Farmers' Market for a great year.  You will not find our booths at the market anymore in 2010, and we will miss seeing you all!  This Saturday we will venture over to Louisville to set up one time only at the Bardstown Road Farmers' Market, to be sure our old friends there get the garlic they need to survive the winter!  Then comes garlic planting time, which, depending on weather, could go on into December or longer.

We can still arrange delivery of bulk orders of Stone Cross Farm Pork, Garlic Scape Pesto and more, as we will be travelling to Lexington once a week all winter to deliver to restaurants.  Please don't hesitate to drop us an email anytime and we'll be happy to put something together for you to stock your freezer, or for your family holiday celebrations!

We will be posting our "Not Your Average" Cranberry Sauce recipe again in a couple of weeks.  It's a fantastic complement to a turkey (or pork!) dinner.  Stay tuned!

By the way, if you're dining at Dudley's and craving some Blue Moon Farm garlic, try the Blue Moon Garlic Soup!  It's delicious!  A creamy, garlicky soup, served with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar and a poached duck egg!  Yum!

I'm sure we will be running into many of you at Good Foods in the coming months! :-)  They are now carrying our Garlic Scape Pesto in stock.

Windy Corner Market (corner of Muir Station and Bryan Station Rds.) also has the pesto in stock.  Take a short drive out there for a delicious lunch or dinner, and pick up some pesto too!

Thank you again for all your support and encouragement in a less than ideal growing year.  It means a lot to us!

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass

The idea for opening a walk-up crperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crpe emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon apptit!

Remember to visit our website at http://www.lexingtonfarmersmarket.com for more information about the market.
