The Lexington Farmers' MarketOctober  27, 2010

The end of October is here already. The weather this summer and early fall has been pretty wacky and we finally got the rain we've needed for months yesterday. Amazingly, things like tomatoes are still hanging in there and will be around for another week or two along with your favorite fall things like greens, pumpkins, squashes, radishes, turnips, sweet potatoes and much more.

If you're planning a Halloween or fall party, make sure to stop at the LFM to load up on fabulous decorations and things to eat. On Halloween my mom would make a festive "veggie monster" out of cauliflower, peppers, broccoli and other fall produce in the shape of a scary face so my brother and I wouldn't binge on candy during trick-or-treating. But if you are going to indulge, our market has some truly gourmet sweets like mini pies, sweet breads, truffles, and pastries for adults and kids alike.

Don't forget, THIS SUNDAY is our LAST Sunday market of the year. Be sure to come from 10am-2pm to stock up on lots of goodies for winter if you primarily shop the Sunday market, but remember, we are a YEAR-ROUND market! We will run outside on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays until the end of November and then move inside to Victorian Square Plaza on Saturdays, December-April from 8am-1pm. Support the LFM all year long!

WEEKLY RECIPE

Roasting Pumpkin Seeds

When you're carving your Halloween pumpkins, don't throw away the seeds!

Toasted and salted, pumpkin seeds have a nutty flavor. They're even better flavored with sweet and savory spices.

How to Roast Pumpkin Seeds

1.  Rinse pumpkin seeds under cold water and pick out the pulp and strings. (This is easiest just after you've removed the seeds from the pumpkin, before the pulp has dried.)

2.  Place the pumpkin seeds in a single layer on an oiled baking sheet, stirring to coat. If you prefer, omit the oil and coat with non-stick cooking spray.

3.  Sprinkle with salt and bake at 325 degrees F until toasted, about 25 minutes, checking and stirring after 10 minutes.

4.   Let cool and store in an air-tight container.

INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

"A Breath of Fresh Air: U.K. Students Promote Asthma Awareness While Saying Thanks"

On October 28th at the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning, Kentucky Children's Hospital and Nick Pulliam will partner with U.K. Community Art Education students to thank Kohl's for a generous donation to the hospital's pulmonology clinic, and to raise awareness about asthma. This fun family celebration is free and open to the public. The Kentucky Children's Hospital will sponsor children's activities, door prizes, and a dance performance by local artists from Mecca Dance Studio. Lexington mayor Jim Newberry will be stopping by, and Community Art Education students will present a custom made community art piece to be hung in the hospital's pulmonology clinic.

Following a substantial donation to the Kentucky Children's Hospital by Kohl's, Nick Pulliam, a Communications major at the University of Kentucky was called upon during the course of his internship, to oversee this family oriented event. In developing a special reception to thank and honor Kohl's for their contribution to the pulmonology clinic, Nick has joined forces with the "U.K. Convergence: Community Art" group. Led by instructor Marty Henton, this group of U.K. students represents a wide range of talented local art advocates, arts administrators, visual and performing artists, and educators interested in working within the Lexington community. In the weeks leading up to the October 28th celebration, the group organized several community art experiences, emphasizing asthma awareness, while also creating works of art to be used in the final installation piece. U.K. Students will be at Thursday Night Live in downtown Lexington on October 21st, and also at the Farmers Market on October 23rd. Not only does the final exciting Kentucky Children's Hospital event help U.K. students become locally involved, it also highlights the importance of Asthma awareness, and most of all, the generosity of caring corporations like Kohl's.

The event will be held  in the Jesse Stuart Ballroom from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday October 28th at the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning located at 251 West Second Street.

This lot is generously provided to us by Central Parking and for this we are extremely grateful.  Beyond that garage, all street parking is free on Saturdays and there are also several pay lots in the area.

FALL SOAP

It's time to stock up wood and do those last minute tasks before cold weather shows up.  The trees are showing color and fall is in full bloom.  Time for my Chocolate Amber Soap and Pumpkin Spice Soap which are great fall soaps. Just made a new batch of Mint Julep and Forest Green.  Also will have Sandalwood, Hyacinth, Supermoist, Oatmeal Body Scrub, the last of Spring Rain and Flowing River.

HONEY

I am so busy that I am will not be doing infused honeys next year.  I still have quite a few 2 oz gift jars left for stocking stuffers this year - so come and get them while they last

We have some 12 lb honeys jugs for those who store over winter.

When does honey go bad? I used to tell people - never, but have since learned that if a yeast spore gets into the honey - that will cause the honey to ferment.  Otherwise honey stays fresh for centuries - theoretically.

What to do when honey crystallizes - put jar on dashboard of car on sunny day and let the sun reliquidify it.

NEWS FROM THE RIVER BLOG - for pictures click on

The weather is getting colder.  It is finally fall.  I am frantically trying to do those last minute chores needed to be done before winter sets in like making sure all the hives have enough honey to make it through and put away all equipment nice and clean.   I know you are doing the same thing because the Holidays are right around the corner.  Where did the year go?

My philosophy is that all women need the three P's - pony, puppy and pool.  I have a dog friend that needs a good home.  If you are looking for a good dog (which is a precious thing) click on my blog and check this baby out.  You can email me for details.

See you at the Market this weekend.

"FRESH LOCAL HONEY" by NICK and BEV NICKELS

Fayette County

We WILL BE at the Lexington Farmer's Market downtown on Saturday, October30th and at Southland Dr. on Sunday, October 31st if it doesn't rain.

We offer the highest quality raw clover honey, pure beeswax candles and pollen.

Our delicious raw honey comes only from the fields and orchards surrounding Lexington, Kentucky. Our raw honey is unheated, and unprocessed so that all its attributes are fully preserved. Honeycomb in a jar with strained honey is also available.

Our candles are 100% unbleached, all natural beeswax. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. They contain no toxins or soot common to commercially produced paraffin candles. They are the candles of choice for those who have asthma, allergies, or headaches due to paraffin or scented candles. They are naturally fragrant with a subtle honey scent. They are made with filtered beeswax; so they produce a bright, clear, steady flame and beautiful illumination.

Bee pollen is nature's most complete food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and a complete source of protein. It can give us that extra edge to stay healthy. An all-around nutritional supplement, bee pollen is ideal for daily use. The bee pollen granules can be sprinkled over salad or cereal, added to liquids or eaten as is.

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

Hello everyone, we are still at the market - but we have moved up in the world.  We are now on Short St - not far from the Pavilion.   Just look for the pictures of the pigs and our Orange aprons.

We should have most everything this week, but we are low on bacon - so come early.   We are still selling lots of Brats and Italian Sausage for cooking on the grill, as well as a whole lot of pork chops.  As the weather cools, it seems that more of you are interested in Breakfast sausage - we have plenty.  Get something that you can cook in the crock pot so that you don't have to cook all day.  A Fresh Ham roast or Boston Butt roast cooked all day in the slow cooker makes great pulled Pork or the world's Best barbeque when you add your own special sauce!

Don't forget to look through our recipe collection and find just what you need for a meal in the coming weeks.  Of course our recipe collection is all about PORK!  If you find a recipe you like, we have copies we can give you.

We invite you to visit our website (which still needs updating) www.hillsideheritagefarm.com and also ask you to join us on Facebook.

This has been a great season and we have really enjoyed getting to know so many of you.

BlueMoon Farm ***Sustainably Grown***

Madison County

Ahhhhhh.......rain!  Too late for this year's crops, but much needed for working ground to plant garlic in a couple of weeks!  We live in a tin roofed house, and the sound of the rain is very soothing.......it made it hard to stay awake this afternoon!

This is Blue Moon's last weekend at the market!!

I spent some time grinding AJI AMARILLO powder today.  There's not a lot, but for those of you who have been waiting, at least there's a little!  It's a hot and fruity flavor, one of our favorites.  I also found a little more SMOKED GARLIC POWDER which I had ground a couple of weeks ago, and tucked away for later.  Last Sunday we sold out, and I had myself convinced that there was no more.  I was delighted to find some for our last 2 market days this weekend!

The GARLIC BRAID rush has started!  So many of you wait until the last minute to buy one!  We've been busy braiding this week to ensure that we have a great selection for the weekend.  It's a beautiful decoration for your kitchen, with the added bonus that it's edible!  Another great way to have "fresh" garlic all winter is to buy bulbs, peel the cloves, chop into a freezer container, cover with olive oil and store in your freezer.  The oil doesn't freeze hard, so when you're ready to cook the work is already done!  Just take a spoon and scoop out oil and garlic into your pan and you're ready to go!

We were so sorry to disappoint our Stone Cross Farm BACON customers last weekend!  A snafu at the processor left us with one pound for the entire weekend!  Our freezer should be well stocked this week, and we'll be happy to set some aside for you if you'll email us in advance.  [email protected]  Of course we'll have all your other favorites as well.....PORK CHOPS, ROASTS (Loin, Boston Butt, Tenderloin), SAUSAGES (Italian, Polish, English Bangers, Brats, Knockwurst and Chorizo), BREAKFAST SAUSAGE, and more.

Each week we've been bringing you some special breads from Sunrise Bakery.....some varieties which they make only for us.  If you're worried about not being able to get them after this weekend, consider buying a few and freezing them for winter use.  Think about a slice of GARLIC FOCACCIA with a steaming bowl of stew in January, or some HERB & CHEESE with your spinach lasagna on a cold winter night!

One of our traditions at Blue Moon Farm is GARLIC BAGELS with goat cream cheese, lox and onion for a lazy Christmas morning.  The great MUFFINS and CINNAMON BUNS do well in the freezer too!

Speaking of the freezer, be sure yours is stocked up with GARLIC SCAPE PESTO for the winter!  It keeps just about forever, and you can use it in almost anything!  From mashed potatoes to spaghetti sauce, bruschetta to sandwiches, everything tastes better!  If you've never tried it, this weekend is your last chance for a sample at the market!

We'll have more of Kenny's (only seasonally available) Aged Cheddar with Apple this week to finish out our season.  Shop early to be sure you get the cheese you want!

Everyone has been raving about the Bracken County SHIITAKE and OYSTER MUSHROOMS, and we'll have them again this weekend.  They are easy to dry and re-constitute for use all winter, so consider buying a bunch!

Bourbon Barrel Foods SOY SAUCE, WORCESTERSHIRE, KENTUCKYAKI, BOURBON SMOKED SALT, PEPPER and PAPRIKA and SORGHUM make great stocking stuffers!!

We'll have lots of GARLIC and GARLIC POWDER (speaking of stocking stuffers!), of course, so get it while you can!

As always, we look forward to seeing you this weekend!  We've had some great market weather, and this weekend looks like more of the same!  Come see us, and say "so long" for the year!

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass

The idea for opening a walk-up crperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crpe emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon apptit!

Remember to visit our website at http://www.lexingtonfarmersmarket.com for more information about the market.
