The Lexington Farmers' Market October 13, 2010

The Race for the Cure runs this Saturday so many of the streets surrounding the market will be closed from 7am until 11am. We suggest you approach the market from north of Short St. or west of Broadway during these hours. Parking on the street should be free in these areas. Don't let this discourage you from coming down to the market! There will be an abundance of delicious, beautiful, homemade, and special items this week, as always (Check out the What You'll Find at Market section below. Lots of vendors sent in updates this week!). And of course the Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday markets will be open as well!

This week is World Hunger Week. In recognition, Faith Feeds will have a special table set up to collect donations this Saturday. You can purchase food from any farmers' market vendor or bring some from your home pantry or garden and volunteers will distribute it among the emergency relief agencies here in Lexington. See the "News Flash" section below for more information.

WEEKLY RECIPE

Amazing Autumnal Gratin

Serves: 10 as a side dish

20 minutes prep time       90 minutes total

2lbs sweet potatoes; washed, peeled and sliced thinly

2 lbs gold or other potatoes; washed and sliced thinly

4 tbsp butter

1 clove garlic; peeled

2 cups milk

1 bay leaf

3 juniper berries

2 sprigs thyme; leaves picked

¼ tsp ground nutmeg

8 oz mascarpone cheese

2 tsp salt

black pepper

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.  Liberally coat a 9x13 glass dish with 1 tbsp of the butter. Bruise the garlic clove slightly and rub the dish with it.  Place the remaining butter, the garlic clove, milk, bay leaf, juniper berries, thyme leaves and nutmeg into a heavy saucepan and bring to a near boil. Meanwhile, empty all but a few tablespoons of the mascarpone into a deep bowl. Remove the milk mixture from the heat. In batches, pass the milk through a fine sieve and into the mascarpone; whisking all the time.  Whisk until the mixture is incorporated and mostly free of lumps.  Alternate layering the potatoes and sweet potatoes into the dish; seasoning with salt and pepper between the layers.  Pour the milk mixture over the potatoes and cover with foil. Bake until tender; about 45 minutes. Uncover the dish and dot the top of the potatoes with the remaining mascarpone. Return the dish to the oven for 10-15 minutes to brown a little on top. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Chef's Note: This gratin is rich and filling; it would be great as a vegetarian main dish. If possible, use either a mandolin or the slicing blade on a food processor to get uniformly cut potatoes. It's much easier and can make a real difference to the entire dish.

Look for these ingredients @ The Lexington Farmers Market:

Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes

Garlic

Thyme

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

NEWS FLASH AND SPECIAL EVENTS

NEWS FLASH...

A Special Opportunity to Give

In recognition of World Food Day ("WFD"), shoppers at this Saturday's market will have an opportunity to contribute food to those in need.  WFD is a worldwide event designed to increase awareness, understanding and informed, year-around action to alleviate hunger. It is observed each October 16th in recognition of the founding of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945.

Volunteers from Faith Feeds will be on hand to accept your donations, and will then deliver them to agencies in Lexington that feed those with little to no access to fresh food.  Faith Feeds is a cooperative association of individuals and faith communities that gather fresh food, which would otherwise go to waste.  Since June 17th of this year the group has gleaned (from the generous farmers of Lexington's Farmer's Market and others) and donated over 27,000 pounds of food.

This opportunity is a "win-win-win" situation --- the farmers win as a result of your additional purchases, those in need win as a result of your contributions and you win by feeling good about playing a part in helping to alleviate hunger.

Look for the Faith Feeds table near the center of the pavilion.

SPECIAL EVENTS...

On Saturday and Sunday, the Friends of the Lexington Farmers' Market will be in attendance to sell market merchandise and answer questions. Central Baptist Hospital's cookbook Beyond The Fence will also be available for purchase at these tables.

Saturday:  Faith Feeds will be collecting donations to distribute to emergency relief organizations in honor of World Hunger Day. Stop by their table in the center of the pavilion to donate. The Hope Center will be accepting donations in exchange for raffle tickets at your chance to win a car!

PARKING is always FREE at all of our markets if you know where to look!  On Saturday it's as easy as parking in the Financial Center Garage (#8 on the map) across the street from Cheapside Park and next to the blue 5/3 building. This lot is generously provided to us by Central Parking and for this we are extremely grateful.  Beyond that garage, all street parking is free on Saturdays and there are also several pay lots in the area.

Finally, if you have ever lost items at any of our markets and they have not been returned, please check with Jeff, the market manager, during market hours or by phone at (859) 608-2655.

"FRESH LOCAL HONEY" by NICK and BEV NICKELS

Fayette County
We WILL BE at the Lexington Farmer's Market downtown on Saturday, October16th and on Southland Dr. on Sunday, October 17th if it doesn't rain.

We offer the highest quality raw clover honey, pure beeswax candles and pollen.
Our delicious raw honey comes only from the fields and orchards surrounding Lexington, Kentucky. Our raw honey is unheated, and unprocessed so that all its attributes are fully preserved. Honeycomb in a jar with strained honey is also available.

Our candles are 100% unbleached, all natural beeswax. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. They contain no toxins or soot common to commercially produced paraffin candles. They are the candles of choice for those who have asthma, allergies, or headaches due to paraffin or scented candles. They are naturally fragrant with a subtle honey scent. They are made with filtered beeswax; so they produce a bright, clear, steady flame and beautiful illumination.

Bee pollen is nature's most complete food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and a complete source of protein. It can give us that extra edge to stay healthy. An all-around nutritional supplement, bee pollen is ideal for daily use. The bee pollen granules can be sprinkled over salad or cereal, added to liquids or eaten as is.

Just 3 more Sundays at Southland.  Stock up!

Sorry that I was not at Southland last Sunday but sold plum out of honey.  Will have plenty this coming week.

FALL SOAP

It's time to stock up wood and do those last minute tasks before cold weather shows up.  The trees are showing color and fall is in full bloom.  Time for my Chocolate Amber Soap and Pumpkin Spice Soap which are great fall soaps. Just made a new batch of Mint Julep and Forest Green.  Also will have Sandalwood, Hyacinth, Supermoist, Oatmeal Body Scrub, the last of Spring Rain and Flowing River.

HONEY

People are starting to stock up honey for winter.  I will have plenty of honey this week.  It will be an amber clover with some ironweed, sunflower and goldenrod nectar as well as all the summer flower nectar in it.  Great honey for allergy sufferers to take.  This will be the last type of honey for the year.

We have some 12 lb honeys jugs for those who store over winter.

What to do when honey crystallizes - put jar on dashboard of car on sunny day and let the sun re-liquefy it.

www.abigailshoneyblog.blogspot.com

The WEG people are gone now, so you can come back to the Market at your regular hours.  I met some interesting people of the past three weeks and thought Lexington looked great.  I am very proud of our city and its people did a wonderful job hosting.

I went to Nashville last week to speak about fiction writing at the Southern Humanities Book Festival.  I met other writers and courtly southern gentlemen whose manners were impeccable.  Click on my blog to see pictures.

See you at the Market this weekend!

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

*PLEASE NOTE Because of the Race for the Cure, Hillside Heritage Farm will be set up on Short St. this Saturday. Look for the orange and white truck.

Hello everyone.  I am sorry I was not there last week.  Maria and Clay had to work.  Dorthy and Hannah were in Missouri at a Family Reunion.  Boone's didn't have my bacon ready.  So, I took the day off.  I really wasn't up to driving up there with my leg anyway.

Unless there is a change in what Boone's told me, we will have bacon, and pork chops (bone in and boneless) this week.  We should have most everything else as well.  We are still selling lots of Brats and Italian Sausage for cooking on the grill, as well as a whole lot of pork chops.  As the weather cools, it seems that more of you are interested in Breakfast sausage - we have plenty.  Get something that you can cook in the crock pot so that you don't have to cook all day.  A Fresh Ham roast or Boston Butt roast cooked all day in the slow cooker makes great pulled Pork or the world's Best barbeque when you add your own special sauce!

Don't forget to look through our recipe collection and find just what you need for a meal in the coming weeks.  Of course our recipe collection is all about PORK!  If you find a recipe you like, we have copies we can give you.

We invite you to visit our website (which still needs updating) www.hillsideheritagefarm.com and also ask you to join us on Facebook.

Our entire family looks forward to getting to know each of you.

3 weekends left for garlic!!

Last Saturday morning I took our dogs for a walk at about 3:30AM before leaving for the market.  It was a beautiful fall morning (night!) very cool, and quite dark with no moon at all.  As we wandered out the driveway I realized that there was absolutely NO sound!  I guess it was cold enough that the frogs in the pond had buried themselves in the mud.  The crickets were eerily still too.  No airplanes were going over, no cars or tractors moving around.  We stopped walking and just stood and listened, and I thought about all of you who live in Lexington and how you never get to hear that.....silence.  It is amazing.

This Saturday the Race for the Cure will take place in downtown Lexington.  Access to the market from 7AM-11AM could be tricky, and we suggest approaching from north of Short St., as Main and Vine will be closed, as well as Short, High, and Limestone.  On the up side, the market shouldn't be too crowded!  :-)     Of course you also have the alternative of shopping at the Sunday market on Southland Drive from 10AM-2PM.  The weekend weather looks perfect again, and with  luck maybe we will even have had a little rain before then!

The BELL PEPPERS continue to flourish!  Time to make SAUSAGE and PEPPERS.... one of my favorite New York dishes!  We've got great Stone Cross Farm ITALIAN SAUSAGE (hot or sweet), as well as the PEPPERS and GARLIC!  Here's a link to a great NY recipe  http://www.squidoo.com/SausageandPeppersRecipe  If you look at the whole page you will find sausage for sale, and you can see that it contains MSG and a few other additives.  All our sausages are MSG and nitrate-FREE!!  (not to mention that ours cost about $10 a pound less!)

We'll have lots of other sausages too, BREAKFAST LINKS, CHORIZO and ENGLISH BANGERS, BRATWURST, POLISH SAUSAGE and KNOCKWURST (hotdogs).  There's also SMOKED BACON, PORK CHOPS, ROASTS, and GROUND PORK!

Now that the weather is cooling off, many of you are beginning to stock your home freezers with pork and BEEF for the winter.  We carry Colcord Farm GRASS FINISHED BEEF.  These steers are totally grass-fed.....never fed any grain....just the way nature intended.  We'll have STEAKS, ROASTS, BURGER and FILETS.

The response to Kenny's Farmhouse seasonal variety "CHEDDAR / APPLE" was amazing last week!  We completely sold out, and had to disappoint many of our Sunday shoppers.  We've got a big supply in now, so everybody who wants some can get it this weekend.  Stop by and try a sample!  Lots of other varieties too.

BASIL BASIL, BASIL!!!  We will have it in "pesto quantity" this weekend!  Get it before the frost hits us!  It's easy to freeze in ice cube trays....after it's frozen pop the cubes out into a freezer bag.  When you're making spaghetti sauce this winter, drop in a frozen cube or two.....a nice taste of summer!

GARLIC BRAIDS for gifts, decoration, or eating!  GARLIC SCAPE PESTO!  Keep a few containers in your freezer for quick and easy dips when company drops by, or to use as seasoning in your favorite dishes....everything from green beans to steak!  Try it as a sandwich topping to perk up a lunch box.  Our "knock-your-socks-off" GARLIC POWDER makes the best oven roasted fries you ever tasted!  The recipe comes on the package!  Also available HICKORY SMOKED.  To make your own rubs, mix our garlic powder with our GROUND CHIPOTLE PEPPER, or SPICY PAPRIKA, and maybe a little Bourbon Barrel SMOKED SEA SALT.  Good on chicken, pork or beef!

We'll have other Bourbon Barrel Foods products too!  WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE- vegetarian friendly (no anchovies), SOY SAUCE- aged in bourbon barrels, KENTUCKYAKI- their yummy teriyaki.  SWEET or BOURBON VANILLA SORGHUM, and Bourbon Smoked SALT , PEPPER and PAPRIKA.

Sunrise Bakery will be supplying us with all your favorite ARTISAN BREADS, PASTRIES, MUFFINS, BAGELS and more!  We have items you can't get at the bakery!  Come have a look!

Don't forget- Blue Moon's last week at the market will be October 31st!!

Market weather just doesn't get any better than this!  Come stroll around and enjoy the day.  We'll be glad to see you! Special order?  garlic@bluemoongarlic.com   Keep in touch on Facebook www.facebook.com/bluemoongarlic  or visit our website www.bluemoongarlic.com

Look for Elmwood moving "under cover" in the Pavilion near Short Street as spaces open up - hopefully we can provide you a more sheltered shopping experience as we move into the season for cooler weather.

We will continue attending each of the 4 farmers market (Tues, Thurs, Sat,

Sun) so please stop in to see the new fall crops that are coming ready for harvest each week.  We continue to offer a full selection of our organic meats and eggs along with our produce at each of the 4 markets also.

Elmwood and your other farms will continue to be set up on Saturdays downtown at Cheapside Park just like normal during the WEG games (and after - remember our outdoor location goes through Thanksgiving!)

This week we are featuring a new bounty of hard shelled Fall Squashes - Green Acorn, Butternut, Spaghetti, Delicata, Sweet Dumpling, and a small, but nice, selection of Pumpkins.  Decorative pumpkins and specialty gourds are also ready and with dry weather this year, they should last through the holiday season.

Other crops we are harvesting including Stringless Green Beans, Yellow Squash, Zucchini, Patty Pan Squashes, Okra, Eggplant, Bell Peppers, Hot Peppers, Cucumbers (new patch), Raspberries, and fresh cut Herbs.  We'll have some Kale and Swiss Chard, possibly some Radishes, and who knows now what other items will be ready the end of the week?

Update on Organic Meats:

We'll have certified organic frozen hens at every market.

We have a small selection of Lamb that has been picked up at the butcher and now ready as well.  Email if you have a specific cut in mind.

Our 100% grass fed, organic beef is fully stocked so now is the time to begin to think of stocking your own freezer!

Special News:

We do take pre-orders for Elmwood certified organic heritage and traditional broad-breasted turkeys either in person or through email.  They are processed at KY's small USDA  inspected facility outside Bowling Green and will be ready for pickup the weekend prior to Thanksgiving.

Just contact the farm (best by email) and we'll share more details with you on expected available sizes, the differences in taste and appearance dependent on heritage or broad-breasted breeds, and pricing.

Elmwood Stock Farm will be set up on Saturday mornings at the market through Thanksgiving.  Look for us to secure your own share of locally grown, organic, wholesome, healthy farm food each week of the growing season. These days, more than ever, it's important to know the source of your family's food and you can look to a local organic farm to meet your body's nutritional needs resulting in good health.

We offer our certified organic eggs from free-ranging hens on grass pasture, organic poultry, and grass-fed beef from our organic Angus cattle. Elmwood's meats, eggs, and vegetables are produced by us on our organic family farm in Scott County.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!
