"FRESH LOCAL HONEY" by NICK and BEV NICKELS
Fayette County
We WILL BE at the Lexington Farmer's Market downtown on Saturday, September 18th and at Southland Drive on Sunday, September 19th if it doesn't rain.
We offer the highest quality raw clover honey, pure beeswax candles and pollen. Our delicious raw honey comes only from the fields and orchards surrounding Lexington, Kentucky. Our raw honey is unheated, and unprocessed so that all its attributes are fully preserved. Honeycomb in a jar with strained honey is also available. Our candles are 100% unbleached, all natural beeswax. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. They contain no toxins or soot common to commercially produced paraffin candles. They are the candles of choice for those who have asthma, allergies, or headaches due to paraffin or scented candles. They are naturally fragrant with a subtle honey scent. They are made with filtered beeswax; so they produce a bright, clear, steady flame and beautiful illumination. Bee pollen is nature's most complete food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and a complete source of protein. It can give us that extra edge to stay healthy. An all-around nutritional supplement, bee pollen is ideal for daily use. The bee pollen granules can be sprinkled over salad or cereal, added to liquids or eaten as is.

ABIGAIL'S
Fayette County
Miss Abigail has won 16 KY State Fair ribbons for honey.
I will be at Southland if I don't sell out on Saturday. |
Why is it recommended that you purchase honey from local beekeepers?
Here is one reason - honey laundering from China.
Click on - http://eatocracy.cnn.com/2010/09/01/the-buzz-on-honey-laundering/?hpt=Sbin
Buy honey from beekeepers you trust!
MEAD MAKERS
We have some 12 lb honeys jugs for those who make mead.
We did our last honey harvest last Wednesday.
While it is the best honey harvest we have ever had due to the profusion of clover this summer, it is still limited. So it may be time to look at your needs for the winter and decided how much honey you will need. We will stay at the Market this fall into November unless it gets cold. After that we shut down until April of 2011.
What to do when honey crystallizes - put jar on dashboard of car on sunny day and let the sun reliquify it.

ELMWOOD STOCK FARM
Scott County
Look for Elmwood moving "under cover" in the Pavillion near Short Street as spaces open up - hopefully we can provide you a more sheltered shopping experience as we move into the season for cooler weather.
We will continue attending each of the 4 farmers market (Tues, Thurs, Sat,
Sun) so please stop in to see the new fall crops that are coming ready for harvest each week. We continue to offer a full selection of our organic meats and eggs along with our produce at each of the 4 markets also.
Elmwood and your other farms will continue to be set up on Saturdays downtown at Cheapside Park just like normal during the WEG games (and after - remember our outdoor location goes through Thanksgiving!)
This week we are featuring a new bounty of hard shelled Fall Squashes - Green Acorn, Butternut, Spaghetti, Delicata, Sweet Dumpling, and a small, but nice, selection of Pumpkins. Decorative pumpkins and specialty gourds are also ready and with dry weather this year, they should last through the holiday season.
Other crops we are harvesting including Stringless Green Beans, Yellow Squash, Zucchini, Patty Pan Squashes, Okra, Eggplant, Bell Peppers, Hot Peppers, Cucumbers (new patch), Raspberries, and fresh cut Herbs. We'll have some Kale and Swiss Chard, possibly some Radishes, and who knows now what other items will be ready the end of the week?
Update on Organic Meats:
Our next weekend for fresh, not-yet-frozen, certified organic hens and packs of cut-up chicken is September 10th-11th. And, we'll have frozen hens at every market.
We have a small selection of Lamb that has been picked up at the butcher and now ready as well. Email if you have a specific cut in mind.
Our 100% grass fed, organic beef is fully stocked so now is the time to begin to think of stocking your own freezer!
Special News:
We do take pre-orders for Elmwood certified organic heritage and traditional broad-breasted turkeys either in person or through email. They are processed at KY's small USDA inspected facility outside Bowling Green and will be ready for pickup the weekend prior to Thanksgiving.
Just contact the farm (best by email) and we'll share more details with you on expected available sizes, the differences in taste and appearance dependent on heritage or broad-breasted breeds, and pricing.
Elmwood Stock Farm will be set up on Saturday mornings at the market through Thanksgiving. Look for us to secure your own share of locally grown, organic, wholesome, healthy farm food each week of the growing season. These days, more than ever, it's important to know the source of your family's food and you can look to a local organic farm to meet your body's nutritional needs resulting in good health.
We offer our certified organic eggs from free-ranging hens on grass pasture, organic poultry, and grass-fed beef from our organic Angus cattle. Elmwood's meats, eggs, and vegetables are produced by us on our organic family farm in Scott County.
Visit our website to learn more, review our price lists, and pre-order your special items.

Stone Cross Farm from Spencer County has been working hard getting their new cheesery up and running, and we will have a limited supply of their new cheese this weekend! We've been waiting a long time, and we're excited! Of course we'll have all your favorite cheese from Kenny's Farmhouse Cheese in Barren County too!

Colcord Farm in Bourbon County supplies us with their can't-be-beat GRASS FINISHED BEEF. We'll have STEAKS, BURGER, FILETS and ROASTS.
Have you tried any of the SEASONINGS from Bourbon Barrel Foods yet? We have a nice selection for you.....the only Small Batch SOY SAUCE made in the US...aged in bourbon barrels, WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE, KENTUCKYAKI, as well as SEA SALT, CRACKED PEPPERCORNS, and PAPRIKA all smoked over fires of bourbon barrel staves.
Of course there will be lots of GARLIC!! BULBS, POWDERS, BAGS, and our beautiful handcrafted GARLIC BRAIDS. We'll have our GARLIC SCAPE PESTO and garlicky CHAMPAGNE DRESSING too! Try them as sandwich spreads, for a gourmet lunch! And for dessert, Lexington's one and only GARLIC CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE!! You just have to try them!

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM
Garrard County
It was great to see so many of you on Saturday. I have grown to look forward to the time when we are at the Lexington Farmers' Market. Yes, I made it to the market just 11 days after my knee replacement surgery. I only climbed into the back of the truck about 5 times and if you were there when it happened, I want you to know it wasn't as bad as it looked! Although we were out of bacon when we started, we had a great day and I want to thank all of you for your continued purchases.
Unless we have trouble getting to Boone's, we will have bacon this week. We are still selling lots of Brats and Italian Sausage for cooking on the grill as well as a whole lot of pork chops. Consider getting something that you can cook in the crock pot so that it doesn't heat up your kitchen too much. A Fresh Ham roast or Boston Butt roast cooked all day in the slow cooker makes great pulled Pork or the world's Best barbeque when you add your own special sauce!
Don't forget to look through our recipe collection and find just what you need for a meal in the coming weeks. Of course our recipe collection is all about PORK! If you find a recipe you like, we have copies we can give you.
We invite you to visit our website (which still needs updating) www.hillsideheritagefarm.com and also ask you to join us on Facebook.
Our entire family looks forward to getting to know each of you.

LA PETITE CREPERIE
Fayette County
La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass
The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France. After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget. The best part was that they were never far away. Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.
My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes. We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here. After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.
La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter. Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be. Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market. We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables. Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.
La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00. You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when. Bon appétit!
