The Lexington Farmers' Market September 8, 2010

Well it is good to be back in the author's seat and I am glad Sarah was able to get away on a much deserved vacation.  As you know, we have had an extraordinary spring and summer during this, our 35th annual market season.  From the opening of the Fifth Third Bank Pavilion in mid-April to our first ever market dinner held there in late July, this has been an unprecedented year for the Lexington Farmers' Market.  In addition, we look forward to selling at our usual locations during the World Equestrian Games and hope we can continue on the same path and create new precedents for the last part of this outdoor market season.

Regarding the food at the market, the summer crops are truly hanging in there and the heat is causing some delays in production for the last of those crops and the first planting of fall vegetables.  That being said, the next few weeks offer a great time to experience the fresh taste of these two fine growing seasons and to see the changes reflected, quite simply, by what our farmers are offering on their tables.  This time of year also offers a great time to remind our loyal customers that our markets are open for several more months, rain or shine, and that we will move indoors during the winter.  So, please join us at any or all of our market and know that we appreciate your support and look forward to serving you during the remainder of the year.

Jeff Dabbelt

Lexington Farmers' Market Manager

PS: After many requests, we brought the long sleeve t-shirts back for fall. We also just received a new shipment of LFM short sleeve t-shirts. We now carry S-3XL in adult sizes and have kids' t-shirts as well!

PS: We continue to have a very positive response to our EBT and Debit machine and hope you'll help spread the word and let others know about this great service. Stop by the Friends of the Farmers' Market booth for more information or to swipe your card.

WEEKLY RECIPE

Chicken with Red Bell Peppers

yield:  serves 4

Ingredients

·         2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter

·         2 tablespoons olive oil

·         2 red bell peppers, thinly sliced

·         2 large garlic cloves, chopped

·         4 skinless boneless chicken breast halves

·         All purpose flour

·         1 cup canned low-salt chicken broth

·         1/4 cup dry white wine

·         2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Preparation

Melt butter with oil in heavy large skillet over medium-high heat. Add peppers and garlic and sauté until pepper are tender, about 10 minutes. Using slotted spoon, transfer peppers to bowl.

Season chicken with salt and pepper. Sprinkle flour over chicken to coat evenly. Add chicken to skillet and sauté until light brown, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer chicken to plate. Return peppers to skillet; add broth and wine. Increase heat to high. Boil until liquid thickens to sauce consistency, scraping up browned bits, about 5 minutes. Return chicken and any juices to skillet. Cook until chicken is cooked through, about 3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer chicken and peppers to platter. Sprinkle with parsley.

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

"FRESH LOCAL HONEY" by NICK and BEV NICKELS

Fayette County

We WILL BE at the Lexington Farmer's Market downtown on Saturday, September 11th and at Southland Drive on Sunday, September 12th if it doesn't rain.

We offer the highest quality raw clover honey, pure beeswax candles and pollen.

Our delicious raw honey comes only from the fields and orchards surrounding Lexington, Kentucky. Our raw honey is unheated, and unprocessed so that all its attributes are fully preserved. Honeycomb in a jar with strained honey is also available.

Our candles are 100% unbleached, all natural beeswax. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. They contain no toxins or soot common to commercially produced paraffin candles. They are the candles of choice for those who have asthma, allergies, or headaches due to paraffin or scented candles. They are naturally fragrant with a subtle honey scent. They are made with filtered beeswax; so they produce a bright, clear, steady flame and beautiful illumination.

Bee pollen is nature's most complete food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and a complete source of protein. It can give us that extra edge to stay healthy. An all-around nutritional supplement, bee pollen is ideal for daily use. The bee pollen granules can be sprinkled over salad or cereal, added to liquids or eaten as is.

Abigail's

Fayette County

Miss Abigail has won 16 KY State Fair ribbons for honey.

I will be at Southland if I don't sell out on Saturday.

Why is it recommended that you purchase honey from local beekeepers?

Here is one reason - honey laundering from China.

MEAD MAKERS

We have some 12 lb honeys jugs for those who make mead.

We did our last honey harvest last Wednesday.

While it is the best honey harvest we have ever had due to the profusion of clover this summer, it is still limited.   So it may be time to look at your needs for the winter and decided how much honey you will need.  We will stay at the Market this fall into November unless it gets cold.  After that we shut down until April of 2011.

What to do when honey crystallizes - put jar on dashboard of car on sunny day and let the sun reliquify it.

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

It was great to see so many of you on Saturday.  I have grown to look forward to the time when we are at the Lexington Farmers' Market.  Yes, I made it to the market just 11 days after my knee replacement surgery.  I only climbed into the back of the truck about 5 times and if you were there when it happened, I want you to know it wasn't as bad as it looked!  Although we were out of bacon when we started, we had a great day and I want to thank all of you for your continued purchases.

Unless we have trouble getting to Boone's, we will have bacon this week.  We are still selling lots of Brats and Italian Sausage for cooking on the grill as well as a whole lot of pork chops.  Consider getting something that you can cook in the crock pot so that it doesn't heat up your kitchen too much.  A Fresh Ham roast or Boston Butt roast cooked all day in the slow cooker makes great pulled Pork or the world's Best barbeque when you add your own special sauce!

Don't forget to look through our recipe collection and find just what you need for a meal in the coming weeks.  Of course our recipe collection is all about PORK!  If you find a recipe you like, we have copies we can give you.

We invite you to visit our website (which still needs updating) www.hillsideheritagefarm.com and also ask you to join us on Facebook.

Our entire family looks forward to getting to know each of you.

John Contini

 BlueMoon Farm ***Sustainably Grown***

Madison County

The word WOW hardly seems enough to describe last Saturday's market!  Cheapside and Short St. were ROCKIN'!!  The weather couldn't have been more perfect for spending time browsing for special foods and other unique products, and you all seemed to be having a ball!  The Blue Moon Farm crew enjoyed the day too, and returned to the farm Saturday evening exhausted and exhilarated at the same time!  Every farmer we spoke to said the same thing......we need more days like that!!  It is quite a boost to morale at a very tired time of the season!  So.....thanks!!

On the downside, no rain!  We need it so badly on Poosey Ridge.  Our BABY SQUASH MEDLEY production will be down severely this week due to lack of moisture.  The patch has been surviving on heavy morning dews.  Squash is very efficient at catching any available water on its big, wide leaves, and funneling it down the base of the plants, where it can do the most good.  There are some storms in the state today, so maybe we'll luck out this time!

For the upcoming weekend we'll have all the regular favorites for you and your family.  We have yummy foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner, including ARTISAN BREADS and PASTRIES from Sunrise Bakery in Lexington, A.S.H.-Free, pasture raised PORK from Stone Cross Farm in Spencer County, or BEEF from Colcord Farm in Bourbon County, wonderful SHIITAKE and OYSTER MUSHROOMS from Bracken County, and A.S.H.-Free Raw Milk CHEESES from Kenny's in Barren County.  To that we add our own FRESH GARLIC, BABY SQUASH MEDLEY, GARLIC SCAPE PESTO, GARLIC POWDERS, CHAMPAGNE DRESSING, and FRESH CUT BASIL.

Bourbon Barrel Foods in Louisville keeps us stocked up with their great products, like the only small batch SOY SAUCE (which is aged in bourbon barrels) in the US,  and salt, pepper and paprika which have been smoked over bourbon barrel staves.

The folks at Stone Cross Farm who supply our PORK, also make sure we have their wonderful HANDMADE SOAPS, like HEMP SEED OIL,  AVOCADO, or LAVENDER OATMEAL.

The Saturday Lexington Farmers' Market at Cheapside is a real event!  Make sure you experience it before winter comes....and better yet, bring a friend who has never been there!  We'll look forward to seeing you!

For special orders, email us at garlic@bluemoongarlic.com   Stay in touch on Facebook at www.facebook.com/bluemoongarlic  or visit our website at www.bluemoongarlic.com

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!
