The Lexington Farmers' Market July 28, 2010

I'm sure there are many of you who can remember what Lexington was like 35 years ago (I unfortunately am not one of them, but I'm guessing there was less street construction.).  While Lexington has gone through many changes in the past three and half decades, the Lexington Farmers' Market has been there all along. From our start over on Cox St. we've seen many changes in our location, vendors, product offerings and customers, but we still strive to bring you the freshest, most delicious, quality farmers' market items we can. Come help us celebrate our 35th anniversary this Saturday at Cheapside Park or on the Farm Tour! Market will be held as usual from 7am-3pm with a mayoral address in the park at 10am, or check out 8 of our farms and wineries on the Farm Tour from 8am-2pm.

The third annual Lexington Farmers' Market Farm Tour will take place Saturday, July 31st from 8am-2pm in conjunction with our 35th anniversary!  This self-guided tour allows you to choose between 7 of our vendors' farms and visit the ones that interest you the most (maybe all of them)! We've received rave reviews from previous attendees, so don't miss out!

Tickets for the tour are only $10 for adults and $2 for children under 12. You can buy your tickets at the Thursday market or even early at market on Saturday.

PS- The A Taste of the Farm in the City dinner is sold out! We had an overwhelming response to this event so make sure to buy your tickets early for next year! If you are attending, see the "News Flash" section for more information and details.

WEEKLY RECIPE

 Indian Style Eggplant Curry

Serves 4-6

2 tbsp olive oil

3 Medium Eggplants

1 large onion; diced

1 small green chili; seeds removed and diced

3 garlic cloves; finely chopped

1 tsp kosher salt

2 tbsp curry powder

1 tbsp cumin seeds

1 heaping tsp ground cumin

1 tbsp mustard powder

2tsp mustard seed

2tsp fennel seed

2tsp fenugreek

 tsp allspice

1 tbsp honey

1 28oz can of crushed tomatoes

 cup frozen peas

freshly ground pepper

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Prick the eggplants all-over with a fork and coat lightly with some oil; place on a baking sheet and roast in the oven 25-30 mins or until the flesh is very soft when poked. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil, over medium-high heat, in a heavy bottomed saucepan. Add the onion, chili and garlic; cook until the vegetables begin to soften. Add the salt and all of the spices; stir briskly in the pan to toast them. Reduce heat to medium-low. When the eggplant has roasted allow it to cool slightly then cut it in half, scoop out the flesh and add it to the pan. Add the honey and the tomatoes. Stir everything together well and allow the mixture to cook together over medium-low heat for 25 minutes. Add the frozen peas and some pepper. Cook 5-10 more minutes.

Note: Serve this curry with some basmati rice and a little plain yogurt. Also feel free to modify the heat of this by using more or less chili. This recipe makes a medium spicy version.

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

"FRESH LOCAL HONEY" by NICK and BEV NICKELS

Fayette County

We WILL BE at the Lexington Farmer's Market downtown on Saturday, July 31st and at Southland Drive on Sunday, August 1st if it doesn't rain.

We offer the highest quality raw clover honey, pure beeswax candles and pollen.

Our delicious raw honey comes only from the fields and orchards surrounding Lexington, Kentucky. Our raw honey is unheated, and unprocessed so that all its attributes are fully preserved. Honeycomb in a jar with strained honey is also available.

Our candles are 100% unbleached, all natural beeswax. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. They contain no toxins or soot common to commercially produced paraffin candles. They are the candles of choice for those who have asthma, allergies, or headaches due to paraffin or scented candles. They are naturally fragrant with a subtle honey scent. They are made with filtered beeswax; so they produce a bright, clear, steady flame and beautiful illumination.

Bee pollen is nature's most complete food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and a complete source of protein. It can give us that extra edge to stay healthy. An all-around nutritional supplement, bee pollen is ideal for daily use. The bee pollen granules can be sprinkled over salad or cereal, added to liquids or eaten as is.

BlueMoon Farm ***Sustainably Grown***

Madison County

I am writing this quickly today before Leo and I go in to Richmond to visit with my parents.  They are moving on Thursday to Georgia after about 15 years here.  We are both excited for them and terribly sad to see them go.  This afternoon will be our last time together before they go, so we are anxious to get there!

We've been busy putting together more of our beautiful HANDCRAFTED GARLIC BRAIDS for this weekend.....the perfect kitchen decoration, and the best way to store garlic!  We'll have a nice selection of both hardneck and softneck braids from which to choose.

If a braid is too much garlic for you, we'll also have our 100% cotton French string bags with single varieties, or our CHEF'S DELIGHT, a string bag containing 6 different varieties (all marked), and of course our individual bulbs of MUSIC.  The extra large ones are perfect for roasting.....we'll give you the recipe!

We are glad to say that we will have OYSTER MUSHROOMS back this week.  We've partnered with a grower in Northern KY to, hopefully, have a steadier supply for you.

We'll have all the "regulars" again this weekend, from A.S.H.-Free Pasture raised KY PORK and BEEF in lots of different cuts, Kenny's KY-made CHEESES, Sunrise Bakery's fresh ARTISAN BREADS and PASTRIES, including their famous CINNAMON BUNS, and GARLIC BAGELS topped with our Music Garlic (warm from the oven around 9:30AM).  We'll even have some fresh soft Italian GOAT CREAM CHEESE for you to put on top!

Bourbon Barrel Sauces and Seasonings, Handmade Soaps, GARLIC SCAPE PESTO and CHAMPAGNE DRESSING and lots more.

It seems like Leo's birthday keeps falling on a market day year after year, and Saturday's the day!  He's not numbering them anymore, but salutations would surely make him smile!

If you have any special orders, please drop us an email [email protected] Visit our website and see photos of the farm and family at www.bluemoongarlic.com or be our friend on Facebook  www.facebook.com/bluemoongarlic

RAGGARD CREEKSIDE FARM

Shelby County

The animal encounters have been slow so far this year, but that doesn't mean everything has been short of excitement. Ed barely chugged the red and white truck home Saturday night after some technical problems.... It wasn't too much of a hassle, depending on how you look at it. We only had to take everything off the truck and put it in a trailer attached to our other vehicle, a Pathfinder, after emptying the trailer of items we had stored in it. The Season begins!!!

We have some of our own tomatoes starting to turn so we should have some before long!!! We'll have big red tomatoes along with our juicy smaller varieties, and heirlooms again this year (German Pinks, Black Russians, etc.) We now have zucchini, squash, cucumbers, green onions, beets, cabbage, kale, collar greens, and some banana peppers! Other great veggie's coming along!! We have Bray Orchard Kentucky Peaches!! They were great this week. Sweet and juicy!!!

We'll also have some tomatoes, beans, and corn from our southern states until ours are ready!! We will also be starting on Tuesday and Thursday at Maxwell and Broadway on June 29th!! We'll still be at Saturday and Sunday market.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass

The idea for opening a walk-up crperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crpe emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon apptit!
