The Lexington Farmers' Market June 30, 2010

Fourth of July weekend tends to be our biggest (and some would say best) market of the year. The summer favorites of corn, tomatoes and green beans are finally in and will be perfect for those cookouts, picnics and other celebrations. We also have lots of great meat and other veggies for grilling, plus breads, berries, flowers, desserts, herbs, and more! In addition to all our outstanding products, we'll have lots of inspiration for your cooking from the pros. On Saturday Chef KC Bruch of Sullivan University will be doing a cooking demonstration and sampling food prepared right at market and on Sunday Chef Jonathan Lundy of Jonathan at Gratz Park will be selling his cookbook. Many of our farmers also provide recipes and tips for their products, so make sure to look for those. Come try the samples and get ideas for different ways to prepare your favorite items or inspiration to try something new. You'll dazzle your cookout guests!

DON'T FORGET- this Saturday, July 3rd we will be at our S. Broadway and Maxwell location to accommodate the festivities downtown. There will be lots of free parking in the Rupp Arena lot right next to the market, off of Lexington Center Dr and closest to Maxwell St. The market will take place from 7am-3pm, as usual. We hope to see you there!

WEEKLY RECIPE

Corn has just come into season, but there's plenty of it already so throw some ears on the grill this Fourth of July! Flavored homemade butters are apparently very "in," so try this one below with some garlic from the market or look up different alternatives online.

Grilled Corn with Roasted Garlic Butter

yield: Makes 6 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 large heads of garlic
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 10 tablespoons (1 1/4 sticks) butter, room temperature
  • 6 large ears sweet corn, husks removed

Preparation

Position rack in center of oven and preheat to 350F. Cut off and discard top quarter of each garlic head. Place garlic in small baking dish. Drizzle with 2 tablespoons oil. Cover dish with foil and bake until garlic is tender, about 1 hour 10 minutes. Cool garlic slightly. Squeeze garlic out of papery skins, letting garlic fall into small bowl. Mash with fork. Stir in butter. Season to taste with salt and pepper. (Roasted garlic butter can be made 2 days ahead. Cover and keep refrigerated. Bring to room temperature before using.)

Prepare barbecue (medium heat). Brush corn lightly all over with remaining 2 tablespoons oil. Grill corn until brown in spots, turning occasionally, about 12 minutes. Serve hot, passing roasted garlic butter separately.

Note: I grill my corn with the husks on. Just pull them back, remove the silks, put the husks back into place and soak the corn for about 10 minutes before putting on the grill.

INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

It seems like summer has cooled off a little.  Hannah's job of pig water supervisor will be a little less stressful this week.  She has had a successful show season so far.  In Boyle County, she didn't place well because her pigs were not quite ready - but she got the ultimate compliment (for us) when the Judge pointed out that "you get no better meat than what you get from these two breeds."   He was referring to her Berkshire Gilt and her Tamworth Gilt - the two breeds that we sell at the Farmers' Market.  She won Grand Champion Gilt with her Berkshire at the Garrard County show.  You'll have to ask her or Clay to tell you about their adventures at the Morehead Show.

Come see us this week for your grilling needs for the 4th.  Look through our recipe collection and find just what you need for a meal in the coming weeks.  Of course our recipe collection is all about PORK!

We invite you to visit our website (which still needs updating) www.hillsideheritagefarm.com and also ask you to join us on Facebook.

Our entire family looks forward to getting to know each of you.

RAGGARD CREEKSIDE FARM

Shelby County

The animal encounters have been slow so far this year, but that doesn't mean everything has been short of excitement. Ed barely chugged the red and white truck home Saturday night after some technical problems.... It wasn't too much of a hassle, depending on how you look at it. We only had to take everything off the truck and put it in a trailer attached to our other vehicle, a Pathfinder, after emptying the trailer of items we had stored in it. The Season begins!!!

We have some of our own tomatoes starting to turn so we should have some before long!!! We'll have big red tomatoes along with our juicy smaller varieties, and heirlooms again this year (German Pinks, Black Russians, etc.) We now have zucchini, squash, cucumbers, green onions, beets, cabbage, kale, collar greens, and some banana peppers! Other great veggie's coming along!! We have Bray Orchard Kentucky Peaches!! They were great this week. Sweet and juicy!!!

We'll also have some tomatoes, beans, and corn from our southern states until ours are ready!! We will also be starting on Tuesday and Thursday at Maxwell and Broadway on June 29th!! We'll still be at Saturday and Sunday market.

"FRESH LOCAL HONEY" by NICK and BEV NICKELS

Fayette County
We offer the highest quality raw clover honey, pure beeswax candles and pollen.

Our delicious raw honey comes only from the fields and orchards surrounding Lexington, Kentucky. Our raw honey is unheated, and unprocessed so that all its attributes are fully preserved. Honeycomb in a jar with strained honey is also available.

Our candles are 100% unbleached, all natural beeswax. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. They contain no toxins or soot common to commercially produced paraffin candles. They are the candles of choice for those who have asthma, allergies, or headaches due to paraffin or scented candles. They are naturally fragrant with a subtle honey scent. They are made with filtered beeswax; so they produce a bright, clear, steady flame and beautiful illumination.

Bee pollen is nature's most complete food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and a complete source of protein. It can give us that extra edge to stay healthy. An all-around nutritional supplement, bee pollen is ideal for daily use. The bee pollen granules can be sprinkled over salad or cereal, added to liquids or eaten as is.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass

The idea for opening a walk-up crperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crpe emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon apptit!
