The Lexington Farmers' Market June 23, 2010

The summer solstice was Monday which means summer is officially here! The temperatures sure are indicating that, and lots of great produce has been giving a head start, so look for all your summer favorites soon!

Not only is it the first week of summer, it's also Pollinator Week in the Commonwealth! Pollination plays a vital role in the health of our national forests and grasslands, as well as the production of much of our food supply.  Pollinators include birds and insects (such as bees) and are necessary for maintaining health, biodiverse ecosystems.  Click here to view the full proclamation for Pollinator Week. Visit www.ksbabeekeeping.org to see how Kentucky's beekeepers contribute to our food supply and visit http://www.kyproud.com/prodsearch.aspx to find local honey and taste the unbridled spirit of Kentucky's beekeepers. (Governor's Office of Agricultural Policy)

SAVE THE DATE! The third annual Farm Tour will take place Saturday, July 31st from 9am-2pm. Our farmers will open up their operations so you can see how your favorite food is grown, raised, and harvested. That evening, in conjunction with celebrating our 35th anniversary as a market, we will be hosting A Taste of the Farm in the City. This dinner in the Pavilion will showcase recipes from Central Baptist's Beyond the Fence cookbook and will feature spectacular ingredients from our members. Please stay tuned for more details and information about ticket sales.

PLEASE NOTE! On SATURDAY, JULY 3 the Lexington Farmers' Market will be held on the corner of S. Broadway and Maxwell Streets to accommodate 4th of July festivities downtown. The market will take place from 7am-3pm, as usual. Parking will be free in the Rupp Arena lot closest to Maxwell St. and accessible from Lexington Center Dr.

WEEKLY RECIPE

Calle Roubic has created another great recipe for us this week! Swing by the Friends of the Farmers' Market table for a copy of the recipe so you can shop for the ingredients right at market.

Oven-Fried Green Tomatoes

Serves 4-6 as an appetizer

15-20 mins prep time      20 mins cook time

3-4 Large Green Tomatoes

1 cup Flour

2/3 cup Yellow Cornmeal

2 tsp Kosher Salt

1 tbsp Cajun Seasoning

1 can Fat-Free Evaporated Milk (1 ¼ cup whole fresh milk works too!)

3 large Eggs

Pepper

Vegetable Oil

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees, and liberally oil a metal baking sheet. In a shallow dish beat the eggs lightly and whisk in the milk. In a separate dish, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, salt, Cajun seasoning, and a generous amount of pepper. Slice the tomatoes ¼-½ inch thick. Coat each tomato slice by dipping into the egg mixture and then the flour mixture. Coat each slice in this way twice. Place the coated tomatoes onto the baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes, turning once about halfway through baking. Serve immediately with a sauce of your choice.

Note: These tomatoes are versatile. You could use them for a side dish, on a salad or even in a sandwich! So easy, and so much healthier!

Look for these ingredients @ The Lexington Farmers Market:

Green Tomatoes

Fresh Eggs

Sun-Dried Tomato Ranch Dip/Dressing

(Great with Fried Green Tomatoes!)

Makes about 1 ½ cups

10 minutes total prep time

8-10 sun-dried tomato halves

3 tbsp Lite Mayonnaise

1 tsp Dijon Mustard

1 ¼ cups Buttermilk

3 tbsp White Wine Vinegar

Salt and Pepper

In a food processor, pulse the tomatoes and mayo until a paste begins to form. Add the mustard, vinegar, and half of the buttermilk. Process for 30 seconds.  Add salt and pepper to taste. Add the remaining buttermilk in small amount to reach the desired consistency.  Refrigerate until ready to use.

Note: If this sauce is being used as a dip, less buttermilk should be used. To use it as a salad dressing, add more, and toss with the greens just before serving.

Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. HERE'S A BIT OF WHAT YOU'LL FIND AT MARKET THIS WEEK...

RAGGARD CREEKSIDE FARM

Shelby County

The animal encounters have been slow so far this year, but that doesn't mean everything has been short of excitement. Ed barely chugged the red and white truck home Saturday night after some technical problems.... It wasn't too much of a hassle, depending on how you look at it. We only had to take everything off the truck and put it in a trailer attached to our other vehicle, a Pathfinder, after emptying the trailer of items we had stored in it. The Season begins!!!

We have some of our own tomatoes starting to turn so we should have some before long!!! We'll have big red tomatoes along with our juicy smaller varieties, and heirlooms again this year (German Pinks, Black Russians, etc.) We now have zucchini, squash, cucumbers, green onions, beets, cabbage, kale, collar greens, and some banana peppers! Other great veggie's coming along!! We have Bray Orchard Kentucky Peaches!! They were great this week. Sweet and juicy!!!

We'll also have some tomatoes, beans, and corn from our southern states until ours are ready!! We will also be starting on Tuesday and Thursday at Maxwell and Broadway on June 29th!! We'll still be at Saturday and Sunday market.

"FRESH LOCAL HONEY" by NICK and BEV NICKELS

Fayette County

We WILL be at the Lexington Farmer's Market downtown on Saturday, June 26th and at Southland Drive on Sunday, June 27th.

We offer the highest quality raw clover honey, pure beeswax candles and pollen.

Our delicious raw honey comes only from the fields and orchards surrounding Lexington, Kentucky. Our raw honey is unheated, and unprocessed so that all its attributes are fully preserved. Honeycomb in a jar with strained honey is also available.

Our candles are 100% unbleached, all natural beeswax. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. They contain no toxins or soot common to commercially produced paraffin candles. They are the candles of choice for those who have asthma, allergies, or headaches due to paraffin or scented candles. They are naturally fragrant with a subtle honey scent. They are made with filtered beeswax; so they produce a bright, clear, steady flame and beautiful illumination.

Bee pollen is nature's most complete food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and a complete source of protein. It can give us that extra edge to stay healthy. An all-around nutritional supplement, bee pollen is ideal for daily use. The bee pollen granules can be sprinkled over salad or cereal, added to liquids or eaten as is.

BlueMoon Farm ***Sustainably Grown***

Madison County

Well, old Lucky, our big white truck, is still in the shop (or "at the spa" as Leo likes to say) and we are so thankful to John Garey for the loan of a truck to pull our market trailer with.  The mechanic says we should have her back by next weekend, and I know we (all) will be glad!    On our way to market last Sunday a half grown wild turkey strolled out in front of us on our back road, and all we could picture was returning John's truck with a turkey shaped hole in the grill!  Then Tuesday a crazy wind came through and took a big tree down right next to the truck and trailer....luckily in the opposite direction!  (I sure hope John doesn't read this!)  :-)

BLUEBERRIES!!!!!  From a transitional to organic farm in Greenup County, these NO SPRAY BLUEBERRIES are the best!  So flavorful and juicy and good for your brain!  They're chock full of antioxidants!  Time to put some in the freezer for the winter!  Just wash and spread them on a cookie sheet, freeze, then bag in ziplocs.  You'll be able to remove just what you need for a serving without defrosting!

Have you ever eaten a PORK dish at the Good Foods Cafe, Dudley's, Stella's KY Deli, Holly Hill Inn or LFM's own Cookin' Up Kentucky?  Then you've tried Stone Cross Farm's ANTIBIOTIC, STEROID AND HORMONE-FREE (A.S.H.-Free), PASTURED PORK!  We have partnered with them to carry a full line of their NITRATE-FREE SAUSAGES (Italian, Chorizo, Polish, Brats, English Bangers and Hotdog/Knockwurst), as well as PORK CHOPS, BACON, BREAKFAST SAUSAGE, TENDERLOIN, LOIN and SHOULDER ROASTS.  It's tender, juicy, delicious, and nothing like grocery store pork!

Thanks for the great enthusiasm for our FRESH GARLIC!!  The garlic harvest went quicker than usual due to some being washed out in the Derby weekend flood.  While we hate it that we lost some, we're glad to be done in this awful heat!!  The barn is full, but won't pop its seams this year!  We'll have plenty to keep you in garlic breath for the year! :-))  Now we can start  concentrating on other crops for summer and fall, like PEPPERS, SQUASH, EGGPLANT, HERBS, BEANS, etc, and begin to think about making GARLIC BRAIDS for the market.  We've had so many requests for them already, we hate to keep you waiting!

Of course we have lots of our own GARLIC POWDER both SMOKED and NOT, our locally famous GARLIC SCAPE PESTO, garlicky CHAMPAGNE DRESSING, Freshly Ground PAPRIKA (sweet or spicy), and this week we will be doing a FRESH MINT harvest.  Remember the Mint Pesto recipe from this enews back in April?  It suggested swirling the pesto into brownie mix before baking.  Our friend Rona gave us a jar that she made, and because we are so busy at this time of year, we tried it just over chocolate and vanilla frozen yogurt.  It was YUMMY!!  We'll be glad to share the recipe with you if you didn't save the enews.

We'll bring a selection of HERB SETS for your garden again this week.  Are you missing anything at this point?  Let us know and we'll bring it to you.  There's still lots of time to start an herb garden, if you've been procrastinating!  Even cold sensitive BASIL will grow long into the fall!  We've got one beautiful MULTI-HERB POT left....a great addition to your porch or deck!

The Bourbon Barrel Foods we bring to you are made in Louisville.  Small batch SOY SAUCE (the only one in the US) aged in bourbon barrels!  For your barbeques there's a great teriyaki sauce called KENTUCKYAKI made with a touch of bourbon, and Worcestershire Sauce also made in bourbon barrels (it's vegetarian friendly too!)  SEA SALT, CRACKED PEPPERCORNS and PAPRIKA all smoked over fires of bourbon barrel staves!  We had a cantaloupe today with a bit of the Bourbon Barrel Smoked Salt on it, and it was terrific!

Colcord Farm's GRASS FINISHED BEEF also pairs beautifully with these products.  Whether grilled or roasted, a slosh of Worcestershire Sauce or sprinkle of Smoked Pepper will bring out the flavor of this delicious A.S.H.-Free, good for you beef!

Add Kenny's Farmhouse Cheeses, FRESH OYSTER MUSHROOMS, and Sunrise Bakery's wonderful crusty ARTISAN BREADS, MUFFINS, BAGELS & CINNAMON BUNS, and your shopping list is filled!

If you can't make it til Sunday's market and are afraid you'll miss out on something, just drop us an email and we'll be happy to hold it for you!

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

It seems like summer has arrived.  For a pasture pig operation like ours, it is a fun time.  Pigs do not sweat enough to keep them cool, so they wallow in the mud!   So our job is to make sure they have a suitable place to wallow - usually a place of their choosing that we continue to add water to.  Hannah's job of pig water supervisor becomes much more time consuming and important in the hot weather.  But, I am not sure who has the most fun - her or the pigs.

We have a new offering this week.  We will now have Brats with cheese.  So if you are a cheese lover you can get your tasty pasture raised pork brats with the cheese already added.

Come see us this weekend.  We are on Upper St. on Saturday and on the very end of the Market in front of Sloan's on Sunday.  Since Clay is out of school for the summer, we are now at the Tuesday and Thursday Markets.  Come look through our recipe collection and find just what you need for a meal in the coming weeks.  Of course our recipe collection is all about PORK!

We invite you to visit our website (which still needs updating) www.hillsideheritagefarm.com and also ask you to join us on Facebook.

Our entire family looks forward to getting to know each of you.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm. and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.  You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!
