The Lexington Farmers' Market June 16, 2010

It's Father's Day already??? If you haven't picked up anything for Dad yet this year, don't worry, we have you covered. If your dad loves to cook or grill, we'll have plenty of meats and veggies to choose from. If your dad loves to garden, there are still many great plant, herb and flower sets he can add to his collection. If your dad loves to read, stop by the Homegrown Authors table and pick up a signed copy of two local works this week. We also have LFM merchandise- hats, t shirts, aprons, tote bags, and new mugs- that any dad would appreciate! Or if you want to spend some quality time with all of those dads in your life, come shop the market and pick up some breakfast, lunch, or a special treat at one of our food vendor booths.

As you can see from the list to the left the amount "in season" produce grows and grows every week. The beauty of eating seasonally and locally is that it makes new additions to this list more exciting and special. We hope you'll take the time to come down to the market and see all the great things we have to offer!

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

HERE'S A BIT OF WHAT YOU'LL FIND AT MARKET THIS WEEK...

"FRESH LOCAL HONEY" by NICK and BEV NICKELS

Fayette County

Since this coming weekend is the Memorial Day weekend, we WILL be at the Lexington Farmer's Market downtown on Saturday, June 19th and at Southland Drive on Sunday, June 20th.

We offer the highest quality raw clover honey, pure beeswax candles and pollen.

Our delicious raw honey comes only from the fields and orchards surrounding Lexington, Kentucky. Our raw honey is unheated, and unprocessed so that all its attributes are fully preserved. Honeycomb in a jar with strained honey is also available.

Our candles are 100% unbleached, all natural beeswax. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. They contain no toxins or soot common to commercially produced paraffin candles. They are the candles of choice for those who have asthma, allergies, or headaches due to paraffin or scented candles. They are naturally fragrant with a subtle honey scent. They are made with filtered beeswax; so they produce a bright, clear, steady flame and beautiful illumination.

Bee pollen is nature's most complete food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and a complete source of protein. It can give us that extra edge to stay healthy. An all-around nutritional supplement, bee pollen is ideal for daily use. The bee pollen granules can be sprinkled over salad or cereal, added to liquids or eaten as is.

BlueMoon Farm ***Sustainably Grown***

Madison County

GARLIC HARVEST!!!  And what a hot one it has been so far!  Our helpers are intrepid, though, and we're hauling thousands of beautiful bulbs to our barn for curing.  We tie them together in "hands", hang them on tobacco sticks, and up they go into the bays of the barn, just like tobacco (only much, MUCH healthier!).  Fans keep the air circulating and help the drying process, and before we know it, we'll be taking the sticks back down again to clean for market, almost as fast as they went up!

The bulbs which get damaged in the harvest are the first to be cleaned up and processed for the wonderful Garlic-Topped Foccacia and Garlic Bagels made for us by Sunrise Bakery each week, or dried to make our own "knock-your-socks-off" Garlic Powders.  Are we totally consumed by garlic??  Well, just ask yourself....... where else can you buy a Garlic Chocolate Chip Cookie?

This week we'll be bringing more freshly harvested MUSIC GARLIC with the tops left on.  If you've never tried garlic right out of the ground, you really must!  It reminds us of a fresh crisp apple, crunchy and juicy.  The cloves are really easy to peel at this stage too!

Don't forget that this Sunday is Fathers' Day!  If you're planning a special feast for your Dad, stop by to check out the great LOCAL PORK and BEEF products we have from Stone Cross Farm in Spencer County and Colcord Farm in Bourbon County.  We have all kinds of terrific SAUSAGES, perfect for a mixed grill!  Brats, Polish, Italian (sweet or hot), English Bangers, Chorizo, Hot Dogs and Polish Sausage!  Or if your Dad prefers, we also have great PORK CHOPS and Grass Finished BEEF STEAKS, or GROUND BEEF for BURGERS!  While you've got the grill going, why not roast some FRESH GARLIC BULBS to use as a topping for your meat or vegetables?

If you have a coleslaw or potato salad on your menu, try adding some of our CHAMPAGNE DRESSING to the sauce for a creamy, garlicky side dish. If you want to create a sauce for your barbeque, we have all kinds of cool Kentucky ingredients!  Bourbon Barrel Foods in Louisville microbrews the only SMALL BATCH SOY SAUCE in the US!  It's made from non-GMO soybeans, and they age it in bourbon barrels!  They also produce a Worcestershire Sauce which is vegetarian-friendly and a Teriyaki they call "Kentuckyaki" which is flavored with bourbon.  We also carry their Bourbon Smoked Sea Salt, Smoked Cracked Black Pepper and Smoked Paprika.  Add to those our own Garlic Powder, Smoked Garlic Powder and Sweet or Spicy Paprika Powders and you'll be sure to create a masterpiece!

Our trusty old truck has been in the shop going on 3 weeks for a major re-fit, and we are lost without her!  We haven't brought our HERB SETS to market the past few weeks because of this, but we're determined to bring some this week.  We have beautiful LAVENDERS and ROSEMARYS, as well as MINT, BASIL, TARRAGON, OREGANO, SAGE and many, many more.  If there is something you are particularly looking for, please drop us an email to make sure we bring it for you, as we're not sure how many we'll be able to fit in!

We'll have all your favorite KENNY'S CHEESES, of course.  Try a sandwich made on one of Sunrise Bakery's ARTISAN BREADS, including the new SOURDOUGH, topped with Kenny's Monterey Jack or Swiss, with a dollop of Blue Moon Farm GARLIC SCAPE PESTO for a gourmet treat!  You can also create a gourmet pizza with our Garlic-topped Foccacia, Garlic Scape Pesto and Kenny's cheese....add meats or vegetables to customize for your family!  We hope to have some of those beautiful and delicious OYSTER MUSHROOMS from Bath County too.

As always, contact us for special orders garlic@bluemoongarlic.com   Find us on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/bluemoongarlic

See you Saturday behind the old Courthouse on Short Street, 7am-2pm, and Sunday in front of Goodyear on Southland Drive, 10am-2pm.

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

It seems like summer has arrived.  For a pasture pig operation like ours, it is a fun time.  Pigs do not sweat enough to keep them cool, so they wallow in the mud!   So our job is to make sure they have a suitable place to wallow - usually a place of their choosing that we continue to add water to.  Hannah's job of pig water supervisor becomes much more time consuming and important in the hot weather.  But, I am not sure who has the most fun - her or the pigs.

We have a new offering this week.  We will now have Brats with cheese.  So if you are a cheese lover you can get your tasty pasture raised pork brats with the cheese already added.

Come see us this weekend.  We are on Upper St. on Saturday and on the very end of the Market in front of Sloan's on Sunday.  Since Clay is out of school for the summer, we are now at the Tuesday and Thursday Markets.  Come look through our recipe collection and find just what you need for a meal in the coming weeks.  Of course our recipe collection is all about PORK!

We invite you to visit our website (which still needs updating) www.hillsideheritagefarm.com and also ask you to join us on Facebook.

Our entire family looks forward to getting to know each of you.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!

COOKIN' UP KENTUCKY

Hello friends,

The time for the market has come again, and here at Cookin' Up Kentucky we will be back in full swing this year.

Of course the first few market days will be a little slow, but you will find me there with hot coffee and my usual array of local biscuits, omelets, and of course the famous fried green tomato sandwich. I will be attending all market days this year so you can find me Saturday downtown, Sunday on southland, and Tuesday and Thursday downtown on Broadway and Maxwell.

I am very excited about being at the market fulltime this year and of course I will have more time to offer new selections for the season, which will include a full lunch menu, among some other secrets, so please come and join me...
