The Lexington Farmers' Market June 9, 2010

We are very lucky to get to use the Fifth Third Pavilion every Saturday morning, but we're not the only ones who get the privilege. Have you checked out Central Bank's Thursday Night Live this year? Every Thursday evening from 4:30-8pm the Pavilion is packed with Lexingtonians enjoying live music, food from area restaurants and vendors, and each other's company. Next Tuesday in the Pavilion is the celebration of Belle Brezing's 150th birthday and the "Taste of Cheapside" sponsored by the Lexington History Museum. Enjoy live music, a cash bar, and a silent auction. The LFM will be there sampling hors d'oeuvres made with products from our vendors.

New items are popping up at market every week as summer continues to gain momentum. Be sure to visit one of our markets and see what's new every week. We know you won't be disappointed!

WEEKLY RECIPE

Throughout the summer Calle Roubic, a personal chef from Lexington, will be providing recipes that will be available at market along with a shopping list for ingredients you can find there. Here is a sneak peak at one of Calle's recipes. Come to the Friends of the Farmers' Market table in the pavilion this weekend for another one!

Mustard Rubbed Pork Tenderloin with Herbed Shell Peas

Serves 4

10-15 minutes prep         20-30 minutes cook time

For the Pork:

1 ½ - 2 lbs Pork Tenderloin

Kosher Salt and Pepper

3 tbsp Whole Grain Mustard

1 tbsp Fennel Seeds

For the Peas:

2 lbs Unshelled Peas

1-2 tbsp Butter

1 ½ tsp Flour

4 scallions; thinly sliced

1 Bay Leaf

2 sprigs Fresh Thyme

2 Basil Leaves

1 sprig Italian Parsley

pinch of Nutmeg

pinch of Sugar

Salt and Pepper

Prepare a gas or charcoal grill for cooking. Rinse and dry the pork tenderloin in the usual way. Season the meat liberally with the kosher salt and pepper. Spread the mustard over the entire tenderloin; rub with the fennel seeds. Set aside.

Shell the peas. Melt the butter in a small saucepan; add the flour and peas; stir until coated. Add remaining ingredients; stir. Add about 2/3 c. of water to the pan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat slightly and allow peas to simmer until much of the liquid has evaporated and the peas are tender, about 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, Grill the pork over medium-high heat, about 10 minutes on each side. Check that the internal temperature has reached 160 degrees. Allow the meat to rest for 5 minutes before slicing.

Remove Herb sprigs and leaves for the peas, and add additional seasoning as needed. Serve alongside the sliced pork tenderloin, with any additional side items.

Look for these ingredients @ The Lexington Farmers Market:

Pork Tenderloin (Loin and Chops work well too!)

Shell Peas

Scallions

Thyme, Basil, and Parsley

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

If you want a better quality of life for all of us, please join The Fayette Alliance today for free.  Visit www.fayettealliance.com for more information.

INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

BlueMoon Farm ***Sustainably Grown***

Madison County

GARLIC HARVEST!!!  Long days, hard work, dirty hands and clothes, and the wonderful aroma of fresh-out-of-the-ground GARLIC!!  We love watching the barn fill up with the bounty of our land, and knowing how many of you are as excited as we are about it!  Leo says he's going to hand dig some MUSIC for market this weekend....the wait is finally over!

Many folks are unfamiliar with fresh garlic, and think they need to hang it up and wait for it to cure to use it.  Actually, it's a whole other taste treat!  The cloves are really hard, really easy to peel, and when you chop or smash them you can see the juice come out!  The flavor is slightly milder until it cures.  You can use them in cooking just like cured bulbs, or roast them!

Due to truck problems last weekend, we were unable to bring our herb sets to market, and that may be the case again this week.  If you are looking for a particular herb, please drop us an email garlic@bluemoongarlic.com and we'll tuck one in for you.  Hopefully we'll be back to normal by the following week.

Our GARLIC SCAPE PESTO is selling like hotcakes this year....I think the word is getting around about how delicious it is!  Chef Jacob at Cookin' Up KY uses it mixed with mayo as a dressing for his Fried Green Tomato and Bacon Sandwich (Yum!), Hardwood Pizza makes a pizza using it, and lots of you are taking it home to use on pasta, vegetables, sandwiches, etc.  Stop by and try a sample!

We'll have our "Knock-Your-Socks-Off" GARLIC POWDERS, including Hickory Smoked.  Freshly GROUND PAPRIKA too.  In fact between our products and the Bourbon Barrel Foods products, we have just about everything you need to make sauces and rubs for your summer grilled dinners.  Worcestershire Sauce, Soy Sauce, Bourbon Smoked Salt, Pepper and Paprika, and Kentuckyaki, a teriyaki flavored with KY bourbon!

We'll have all your favorite CHEESES from Kenny's in Barren County.  Perfect for sandwiches, picnics, hors d'oeuvres, omelets, you name it!

Stone Cross Farm's PORK CHOPS, SAUSAGES of all kinds and ROASTS are from pasture raised, antibiotic-free hogs, raised in Spencer County.  There is no comparison between these and store-bought!  Likewise the GRASS FINISHED BEEF STEAKS from Colcord Farm in Bourbon Co.  Tasting is believing!  Stop by and check out all the different cuts we have for you!

Sunrise Bakery is doing a fantastic job for us this year with ARTISAN BREADS including the new SOURDOUGH, PASTRIES, GARLIC BAGELS and more.  (Have you tried a GARLIC CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE yet?)

Special orders garlic@bluemoongarlic.com  Our website is www.bluemoongarlic.com and you can find us on Facebook www.facebook.com/bluemoongarlic

See you this weekend!

ABBONDANZA

Fayette County

CIAO from Oliva Bella Extra Virgin Olive Oils from Italy!

We're back at the Lexington Farmers Market with a roar.

Stop by our two booths and try our new line of prepared foods:  cassoulet, wheatberry salad, golden garlic dressing, garlic croutons, and all of our other house made sauces and products.  We SOLD OUT OF ALL last week at the market but, Chef Stacey has been hard at in production this week making sure we will have plenty for Saturday (we DO advise you call to reserve!).

Of COURSE we have our flagship Oliva Bella Extra Virgin Olive Oils from Italy, our Aged (8 years in wood) Balsamico for you to try, line up early for your "shot" of oil and "chaser" of balsamico.

And if you're looking for the PARTY, Marta Miranda, world famous in her OWN mind...and Chef Stacey Moore will be cooking and carrying on each Saturday starting around 10 am.

Remember that the shop is also open on Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm and there is even more to sample at the shop than at the market.  But...do NOT eat lunch first.

Be good to your belly and bring it by to see us on Saturday!  Our shop is located at 406 South Broadway (across from Wildcat Liquors....EVERYONE knows where Wildcat Liquors is!) and you and reach us at 859 983 3567.

BlEUGRASS CHEVRE

Fayette/Clark County

We'll see you at the market on Saturday, rain or shine,  and don't forget to stop by for a taste of CHOCOLATE CHEVRE.  Unaware that chocolate has a storm of controversy surrounding it (just Google "politically correct chocolate"),   a market customer kindly suggested that we might want to steer away from the H word (Hershey!) and go with a kinder, gentler chocolate.  So ... We have happily switched to an organic, Fair Trade cocoa from Equal Exchange.

And speaking of politically correct,   the harvest of palm oil is  another  touchy subject, but we have always used the organic, fairly traded version in our goat milk soaps.  And by the way, we will have a new batch of soaps this week ... flowers, goats, bees, bars too!  And Lucy will be back with her sorghum.

Okay, we've put it all out on the table.  Thanks to our educated  customers for always keeping us on our toes.

Cheers,

Susan and the Gourmet Goats

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

It seems like summer has arrived.  For a pasture pig operation like ours, it is a fun time.  Pigs do not sweat enough to keep them cool, so they wallow in the mud!   So our job is to make sure they have a suitable place to wallow - usually a place of their choosing that we continue to add water to.  Hannah's job of pig water supervisor becomes much more time consuming and important in the hot weather.  But, I am not sure who has the most fun - her or the pigs.

We have a new offering this week.  We will now have Brats with cheese.  So if you are a cheese lover you can get your tasty pasture raised pork brats with the cheese already added.

Come see us this weekend.  We are on Upper St. on Saturday and on the very end of the Market in front of Sloan's on Sunday.  Since Clay is out of school for the summer, we are now at the Tuesday and Thursday Markets.  Come look through our recipe collection and find just what you need for a meal in the coming weeks.  Of course our recipe collection is all about PORK!

We invite you to visit our website (which still needs updating) www.hillsideheritagefarm.com and also ask you to join us on Facebook.

Our entire family looks forward to getting to know each of you.

John Contini

"FRESH LOCAL HONEY" by NICK and BEV NICKELS

Fayette County

Since this coming weekend is the Memorial Day weekend, we WILL be at the Lexington Farmer's Market downtown on Saturday, June 5th and at Southland Drive on Sunday, June 6th.

We offer the highest quality raw clover honey, pure beeswax candles and pollen.

Our delicious raw honey comes only from the fields and orchards surrounding Lexington, Kentucky. Our raw honey is unheated, and unprocessed so that all its attributes are fully preserved. Honeycomb in a jar with strained honey is also available.

Our candles are 100% unbleached, all natural beeswax. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. They contain no toxins or soot common to commercially produced paraffin candles. They are the candles of choice for those who have asthma, allergies, or headaches due to paraffin or scented candles. They are naturally fragrant with a subtle honey scent. They are made with filtered beeswax; so they produce a bright, clear, steady flame and beautiful illumination.

Bee pollen is nature's most complete food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and a complete source of protein. It can give us that extra edge to stay healthy. An all-around nutritional supplement, bee pollen is ideal for daily use. The bee pollen granules can be sprinkled over salad or cereal, added to liquids or eaten as is.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!

COOKIN' UP KENTUCKY

Fayette County

Hello friends,

The time for the market has come again, and here at Cookin' Up Kentucky we will be back in full swing this year.

Of course the first few market days will be a little slow, but you will find me there with hot coffee and my usual array of local biscuits, omelets, and of course the famous fried green tomato sandwich. I will be attending all market days this year so you can find me Saturday downtown, Sunday on southland, and Tuesday and Thursday downtown on Broadway and Maxwell.

I am very excited about being at the market fulltime this year and of course I will have more time to offer new selections for the season, which will include a full lunch menu, among some other secrets, so please come and join me...
