The Lexington Farmers' Market June 2, 2010

Can you believe it's June already? Last week marked the one year anniversary of my employment at the market. It's been great to be here for an entire year and watch the market offerings vary with the seasons and cycle back. We've also seen a lot of changes in the market itself with the fabulous Fifth Third Pavilion to use on Saturdays, many new vendors, and an influx of new customers. The Lexington Farmers' Market is quite a dynamic organization and it couldn't weather all the changes and continue to grow without the support of a vibrant customer base and community.

The LFM is pleased to give you the opportunity to celebrate the flavor of the Bluegrass with Chef Jonathan Lundy of Jonathan's at Gratz Park. Chef Lundy will be signing his new cookbook Jonathan's Bluegrass Table: Redefining Kentucky Cuisine at the market this Saturday and next. Take the opportunity to meet Chef Lundy and purchase his new book filled with recipes that exemplify refined Kentucky cuisine, then pick one and shop for many of the ingredients right in the market! All proceeds from books purchased on these two days directly benefit the Lexington Farmers' Market.

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

If you want a better quality of life for all of us, please join The Fayette Alliance today for free.  Visit www.fayettealliance.com for more information.

INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

Caffemarco

Clark County

I've been roasting and experimenting with blending the new crop from Kenya- a Mataro Peaberry. Today I'm very excited to be offering it on Saturday, June 6. This is worth your getting up early and having a sample (rain or shine).

Loads of lyrical texture, balance, and a complexity of flavor that just keeps coming. There's enough acidity to refresh and exhilarate the palate and a smooth, dark-roasted body to feed your soul.

I'm eager to share this coffee. It won't be around long enough - maybe three weeks.

CaffeMarco Coffee will have a selection of certified organic, Fair Trade coffees for sale as well as (while it lasts) coffee by the cup.

The beans are roasted in Paris, Kentucky on Thursday every week for the Saturday Lexington Farmers Market. Thank you.

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

It seems like summer has arrived.  For a pasture pig operation like ours, it is a fun time.  Pigs do not sweat enough to keep them cool, so they wallow in the mud!   So our job is to make sure they have a suitable place to wallow - usually a place of their choosing that we continue to add water to.  Hannah's job of pig water supervisor becomes much more time consuming and important in the hot weather.  But, I am not sure who has the most fun - her or the pigs.

We have a new offering this week.  We will now have Brats with cheese.  So if you are a cheese lover you can get your tasty pasture raised pork brats with the cheese already added.

Come see us this weekend.  We are on Upper St. on Saturday and on the very end of the Market in front of Sloan's on Sunday.  Since Clay is out of school for the summer, we are now at the Tuesday and Thursday Markets.  Come look through our recipe collection and find just what you need for a meal in the coming weeks.  Of course our recipe collection is all about PORK!

We invite you to visit our website (which still needs updating) www.hillsideheritagefarm.com and also ask you to join us on Facebook.

Our entire family looks forward to getting to know each of you.

BlueMoon Farm ***Sustainably Grown***

Madison County

We've been watching the wrens tending to a nest full of babies in a birdhouse on our front porch post the past couple of weeks.  Yesterday afternoon when I went out the front door the parent birds started reading me the riot act, and when I looked around and followed the chirping, I found one little fledgling hiding behind a box, with Mom and Dad delivering food and encouragement!  This morning the other two took flight (well, more of a glide to the ground, actually!) and I went out with the camera to try to get a shot of the little cuties, but I decided I might be interfering, so I gave up.  One of them had a fuzzy feather sticking up like a cowlick on the back of his head!  We always feel good to know the babies made it to flight......there are so many hazards!  I have posted a couple of pre-flight photos on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/bluemoongarlic .  Be sure to "Like" us while you're there!

GARLIC!!!!  This week we are delighted to tell you that we'll have the very first freshly harvested GARLIC BULBS!  We'll bring them with the tops left on, and you can use the main part of the stem too!  We love fresh garlic!  It's really hard and crunchy, and juicy too!  You don't have to peel the cloves.....the wrappers are edible at this point!  Shop early so you don't miss it....there will be a limited amount this week as we will be hand selecting plants to dig.  We'll have more GARLIC SCAPES this week too.  The response to them this year has been very encouraging!  Word is getting out about how delicious they are (easy to cook with too!).   They are available for such a short time!  THIS WILL BE THE LAST WEEK FOR GARLIC SCAPES & BABY GREEN GARLIC!  Of course we have GARLIC SCAPE PESTO available year-round and soon you'll be able to get it at Good Foods Market too!  If you've never tasted it, stop by our booth this weekend for a sample, or try it at the market on a pizza from Hardwood Pizza Company, or a Fried Green Tomato and Bacon Sandwich from Cookin' Up KY!  It's a terrific topping for pasta, great as a sandwich spread, or as an addition to just about any steamed vegetable!

On Saturday Blue Moon Farm will be celebrating our helper Elizabeth's 30th birthday!  Please stop by and wish her a happy day and a happy year!  She's been with us for 3 years now, and we can't imagine market without her!  Happy Birthday, Elizabeth!

We provided food for a lot of barbeques Memorial Day weekend!  STEAKS and BURGER from Colcord Farm (Paris, KY), PORK CHOPS, TENDERLOINS, and all kinds of SAUSAGES from Stone Cross Farm (Taylorsville, KY).  Good hearty ARTISAN BREAD from Sunrise Bakery in Lexington.  The seasonings were from Bourbon Barrel Foods in Louisville.......makers of the only small batch SOY SAUCE in the US, made from non-GMO KY-grown soybeans, and aged in bourbon barrels.  We have their SOY, WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE, KENTUCKYAKI (their teriyaki sauce), BOURBON SMOKED PAPRIKA, SALT and CRACKED PEPPERCORNS.

OYSTER MUSHROOMS are back this week!!  Grown in Bath County, these tasty, tender Certified Organic beauties will be a real treat for your family.  Here's a great recipe!

PAN ROASTED MUSHROOMS

8 oz. Oyster Mushrooms

4-5 scallions, sliced

1-2 cloves freshly harvested Blue Moon Farm Garlic, minced or sliced

A big pinch of fresh chopped parsley, basil, thyme, or oregano

1/4 cup Bourbon Barrel Aged Worcestershire Sauce

Toss together in a bowl and let sit for 20 minutes.  Heat a skillet and coat with olive oil.  Sauté mushrooms and let caramelize.  Sprinkle with grated Kenny's Asiago Cheese while still warm, and toss to coat.  Serve as hors d'oeuvre or side dish to any grilled meat.

This will probably be the last week for Colcord Farm's out-of-this-world ORGANIC ASPARAGUS, so come early and get a bunch!  We hate the end of asparagus season, but the shortness of its season is one thing which makes it so special.  Steam some with Garlic Scapes while you can!!

The Sunrise Bakery SOURDOUGH BREAD has been selling out fast!!  It's so delicious, and keeps a LONG time!  We can only get a limited amount, so shop early!  GARLIC BAGELS arrive around 9:30 warm from the oven, and we'll have Sapori d'Italia Goat Cream Cheese to go on them!  Lots of other breads, pastries and more!

You can get the majority of your weekly shopping done at the market these days....the diversity of product is amazing!  We hope you will tell your friends about us.....better yet, meet them there for shopping and breakfast or lunch!

Special requests?  garlic@bluemoongarlic.com  We look forward to seeing you this weekend!

BlEUGRASS CHEVRE

Fayette/Clark County

We'll be at the Saturday market with more cheese than ever.  Come by for a taste of our mascarpone-like chocolate chevre which is great with the market's fresh strawberries and PEACHES this week.   And we WILL HAVE plenty of feta to glorify all those wonderful salad greens, onions, sugar snap peas and tomatoes available at the market right now.

"FRESH LOCAL HONEY" by NICK and BEV NICKELS

Fayette County

Since this coming weekend is the Memorial Day weekend, we WILL be at the Lexington Farmer's Market downtown on Saturday, June 5th and at Southland Drive on Sunday, June 6th.

We offer the highest quality raw clover honey, pure beeswax candles and pollen.

Our delicious raw honey comes only from the fields and orchards surrounding Lexington, Kentucky. Our raw honey is unheated, and unprocessed so that all its attributes are fully preserved. Honeycomb in a jar with strained honey is also available.

Our candles are 100% unbleached, all natural beeswax. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. They contain no toxins or soot common to commercially produced paraffin candles. They are the candles of choice for those who have asthma, allergies, or headaches due to paraffin or scented candles. They are naturally fragrant with a subtle honey scent. They are made with filtered beeswax; so they produce a bright, clear, steady flame and beautiful illumination.

Bee pollen is nature's most complete food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and a complete source of protein. It can give us that extra edge to stay healthy. An all-around nutritional supplement, bee pollen is ideal for daily use. The bee pollen granules can be sprinkled over salad or cereal, added to liquids or eaten as is.

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!

ABBONDANZA

We'll have our extra virgin olive oils from Italy, our 8 year aged Balsamico, sauces, Italian pastas and Breads.  Come let us take you on a delicious tour of Italy right here in Lexington!  (of course, if it rains, please come see us at the shop!)

Before or after the market, come by our shop at 406 South Broadway for a shot of Cuban coffee, stuffed ravioli, delightful biscotti (which are perfect for dunking in your Cuban coffee) all made in house by our own Chef Stacey.

Call the shop early in the week to order and pick up our weekly "la Cena per la Casa)" dinner to take home.  Call ahead to order, let us know what day and time you will come through (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) and we'll have it packaged and ready with your name on it.  Plan early as we are only making a limited number each week.  Call 859 983 3567 for details.
