The Lexington Farmers' Market May 26, 2010
Greetings!

Memorial Day is almost here and it's time to remember those who lost their lives in military service and recognize their sacrifice. Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and observance goes back to 1865 to honor fallen soldiers of the Civil War. Memorial Day became a federally observed holiday on the last Monday of May in 1971.

For many, Memorial Day weekend also marks the unofficial start to summer. The Lexington Farmers' Market truly can be a one-stop-shop for all your barbecue, cookout and picnic needs. Our vendors have local beef, pork, chicken and lamb for your grill, lots of great veggies (including things like corn and watermelon from the southern states if you just can't wait for ours to come into season!), cheeses, eggs, pasta, baked goods, specialty items, and more! Or if you plan on using your day off to garden, we have endless varieties of plants and flowers as well. So come Thursday, Saturday or Sunday to our three different locations and get everything you need to kick off summer!

WEEKLY RECIPE

In addition to your typical barbecue fare, why not try something new on the grill this Memorial Day?

Greek Lamb Kabobs with Yogurt-Mint Salsa Verde

Yield 8 skewers

Ingredients

Lamb Skewers:

  • 8 6-inch rosemary sprigs*
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme
  • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup sherry vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground white pepper
  • 1 1/2 pounds lamb tenderloin, cut into 2-inch pieces

* Can use regular skewers instead of rosemary sprigs

Salsa Verde:

  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/3 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 crushed garlic clove
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh mint
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh oregano
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon small capers
  • 1 anchovy fillet

Directions

1.     Soak the rosemary sprigs in water for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, whisk together the garlic, thyme, olive oil, sherry vinegar, salt, and pepper in a glass bowl. Toss the lamb pieces in the marinade, and allow to marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes. After the lamb has marinated, thread onto the rosemary sprigs (or skewers).

2.     While the lamb is marinating, prepare the salsa verde by placing the lemon juice, olive oil, yogurt, garlic, salt, mint, oregano, parsley, capers, and anchovy fillet into the bowl of a blender. Blend until smooth, then pour into a serving dish and set aside.

3.     Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat.

4.     Cook the lamb skewers, turning occasionally, until no longer pink, about 8 minutes. Serve with salsa verde.

THE FAYETTE ALLIANCE

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

If you want a better quality of life for all of us, please join The Fayette Alliance today for free.  Visit www.fayettealliance.com for more information.

INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

HERE'S A BIT OF WHAT YOU'LL FIND AT MARKET THIS WEEK...

Abigail's Honey

Fayette County

I am at the Market both Saturday and Sunday.

Locust honey should be here soon! In the meantime I have some wonderful Wildflower honey that has the tangy taste of Redbud trees that so many of you like.  Also Lavender, Orange, Cinnamon and Lemon Honeys.

This is the beginning of soap making weather for me.  I have made a beautiful Forest Green soap - dark earthly brown with moss green and purple.  Very pretty and smells like the forest.

Also have made my Hyacinth Soap which is blue and white.  I try to the soap resemble water as hyacinth is a water plant.  Smells divine.

"FRESH LOCAL HONEY" by NICK and BEV NICKELS

Fayette County

Since this coming weekend is the Memorial Day weekend, we WILL NOT be at the Lexington Farmer's Market downtown on Saturday, May 29th and at Southland Drive on Sunday, May 30th.

We offer the highest quality raw clover honey, pure beeswax candles and pollen.

Our delicious raw honey comes only from the fields and orchards surrounding Lexington, Kentucky. Our raw honey is unheated, and unprocessed so that all its attributes are fully preserved. Honeycomb in a jar with strained honey is also available.

Our candles are 100% unbleached, all natural beeswax. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. They contain no toxins or soot common to commercially produced paraffin candles. They are the candles of choice for those who have asthma, allergies, or headaches due to paraffin or scented candles. They are naturally fragrant with a subtle honey scent. They are made with filtered beeswax; so they produce a bright, clear, steady flame and beautiful illumination.

Bee pollen is nature's most complete food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and a complete source of protein. It can give us that extra edge to stay healthy. An all-around nutritional supplement, bee pollen is ideal for daily use. The bee pollen granules can be sprinkled over salad or cereal, added to liquids or eaten as is.

BlueMoon Farm ***Sustainably Grown***

Madison County

The unofficial start of summer is this weekend, but the color of my face when I came in from mowing the lawn this afternoon says it may be here already!  Whew!  Good weather for basil growing!  We finally put ours in the ground this week, and will look forward to bringing bunches to the market in a few weeks.  Of course we'll have BASIL SETS as well as many, many other POTTED HERBS for your garden this week.  Don't worry if you don't have a garden....most of them will do fine in pots on your deck or outside your door on your sunny porch.

Many of you will be planning family picnics and barbeques to celebrate the Memorial Day holiday, and we'd love it if you got every single thing you need at the farmers' market!  We'll have lots of meats to barbeque: BURGER and STEAKS from Colcord Farm's Grass Finished Beef herd; PORK SAUSAGES of all kinds from HOT and SWEET ITALIAN, POLISH and KNOCKWURST to ENGLISH BANGERS, and BRATS!!  Something for every appetite!  Chop up some fresh GARLIC SCAPES and saute in olive oil to top your grilled meats, or steam some SCAPES in with a bunch of Colcord Farm ORGANIC ASPARAGUS, drizzle with balsamic vinegar and serve!

We even have seasonings and sauces to help you create delicious dishes.....our own GARLIC POWDER and PAPRIKA, as well as Bourbon Barrel Foods (Louisville) Small Batch SOY SAUCE (the only one in the US), WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE, KENTUCKYAKI.  BOURBON BARREL SMOKED SEA SALT, CRACKED PEPPERCORNS AND PAPRIKA too.

Is there a potato salad or coleslaw on your menu?  Our CHAMPAGNE DRESSING goes great in either one! (and so do raw chopped scapes, by the way!)   Or maybe a pasta salad dressed with our GARLIC SCAPE PESTO!  What could be easier or more delicious?

We'll have lots of different ARTISAN BREADS from our friends at Sunrise Bakery, including the new SOURDOUGH (better get there early!) to complement your meal, or GARLIC-TOPPED FOCCACIA or GARLIC BAGELS for your picnic!  Kenny's KY made CHEESES go with all of the above!  We've got at least 14 varieties from which to choose, and even a soft Italian GOAT CREAM CHEESE from Sapori d'Italia.  The cream cheese is terrific on the BAGELS or BLACKBERRY MUFFINS!

Dessert!!  GARLIC CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES!! :-))

As always, we welcome your special orders at garlic@bluemoongarlic.com

We'll see you Saturday at Cheapside, Sunday at Southland Drive.

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

We want to thank all of our customers at the Lexington Farmers' Market.  We are continuing to experience great sales of our Pasture raised pork.

For a report on the saga of the escaped sow, we can say that all turned out well.   She farrowed before we could catch her and she has 6 healthy piglets.  We started taking her feed and feeding her in a particular spot so the she would come to us.  Tuesday evening Clay fed her with a rope loop about the feed and when she came up to eat he was able to get the rope around her middle and tie her to the back of the truck.  He called my wife saying to tell Dad to bring the other truck and trailer.  She came and got me off the tractor and we went to get the elusive pig.  It took 20 minutes but with Clay pulling on the rope after we ran it through the trailer and with Hannah and I pushing and lifting on her we were able to get that 400# sow in the trailer!  Then we had to catch the babies who were still in the grown up hollow.  Hannah caught 3, Clay caught 2 and Dorthy caught 1 that tried to escape down the road.  They are all back within the confines of our little hog ranch.

Come see us this weekend.  We are on Upper St. on Saturday and on the very end of the Market in front of Sloan's on Sunday.  We have the best pork you have ever tasted.  Come look through our recipe collection and find just what you need for a meal in the coming weeks.  Since it is Memorial Day Weekend - we are running a special on Spare Ribs.  Imagine your favorite barbecue sauce on some grilled ribs!

We invite you to visit our website (which we will be updating soon) www.hillsideheritagefarm.com and also ask you to join us on Facebook where I plan to start doing regular updates.

Our entire family looks forward to getting to know each of you.

BlEUGRASS CHEVRE

Fayette/Clark County

We'll be at the Saturday market with more cheese than ever.  Come by for a taste of our mascarpone-like chocolate chevre which is great with the market's fresh strawberries and PEACHES this week.   And we WILL HAVE plenty of feta to glorify all those wonderful salad greens, onions, sugar snap peas and tomatoes available at the market right now.

A reminder: Rona and Steve's Cornbread Supper takes a field trip to our farm on Memorial Day at 6 p.m.  Our own vendor Abigail Keam will be a special guest and will be signing her clever, quirky new book Death by a Honeybee.

The setting is Lexington and much of the mystery revolves around a fictitious (or is it?) Lexington Farmer's Market.  As one Herald-Leader reviewer said, "After you read it, you will never look at LFM vendors the same way again!"

Email gourmetgoats@msn.com for directions to the farm and more info.  Or go to cornbreadsuppers.com

On Monday our goats will also be on hand (foot?) to sign autographs.  This week the girls have been in their extreme "diva" mode (we call them the Caprine Divas!).  It's been so hot they have done nothing but munch on hay, drink buckets and buckets of cold water and lounge around in front of fans.

RAGGARD CREEKSIDE FARM

Shelby County

So far this year, we've had no "animal" encounters! The rain did cause the creek to come spilling out onto our field. The "rapids" (as they appeared to us after all the work!) took out some cabbage plants and covered some pea plants with debris.  (It also included the neighbors son's kid basketball goal!)

We will have delicious Shell Out Peas and Sweet Sugar Snap Peas this week. Also, Leaf, Romain and Butterhead Lettuce. Kale and collar Green are ready!! Green onions, and tomato plants. ( Still have popular heirloom like Black Russian, Cherokee Purple and Brandywine. Also lots of Super Tasty, Big Beef, and Beefsteak plants.  Some bell pepper plants also... Some good tomatoes, beans, and corn from our Southern States (only until ours come in!)

Come see us downtown at back of pavilion on road (red and white camper on white truck). You can't miss and the tomato plants!!  We'll also be on Southland on Sundays at end of first row (near Sloan's)

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!

ABBONDANZA

Fayette County

CIAO LEXINGTON!!  We are back at the downtown market this Saturday.  Where to find us?  Look for the Italian flag flying 20 feet over our booth.

We'll have our extra virgin olive oils from Italy, our 8 year aged Balsamico, sauces, Italian pastas and Breads.  Come let us take you on a delicious tour of Italy right here in Lexington!  (of course, if it rains, please come see us at the shop!)

Before or after the market, come by our shop at 406 South Broadway for a shot of Cuban coffee, stuffed ravioli, delightful biscotti (which are perfect for dunking in your Cuban coffee) all made in house by our own Chef Stacey.

Call the shop early in the week to order and pick up our weekly "la Cena per la Casa)" dinner to take home.  Call ahead to order, let us know what day and time you will come through (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) and we'll have it packaged and ready with your name on it.  Plan early as we are only making a limited number each week.  Call 859 983 3567 for details.

We will be at the market Saturday 8 am to 1 pm and at the shop Thursday and Fridays, 10 am to 6pm and Saturdays 10 am to 4 pm.

Fayette County

Hello friends,

The time for the market has come again, and here at Cookin' Up Kentucky we will be back in full swing this year.

Of course the first few market days will be a little slow, but you will find me there with hot coffee and my usual array of local biscuits, omelets, and of course the famous fried green tomato sandwich. I will be attending all market days this year so you can find me Saturday downtown, Sunday on southland, and Tuesday and Thursday downtown on Broadway and Maxwell.

I am very excited about being at the market fulltime this year and of course I will have more time to offer new selections for the season, which will include a full lunch menu, among some other secrets, so please come and join me...
