The Lexington Farmers' Market May 19, 2010
Greetings!

We're just over a month into our market season and it's already hard to imagine the time of year when we don't have four markets a week and the very few things are in season. We hope that this year will be one of the best for the Lexington Farmers' Market and we think that in many respects it will be. The new pavilion has created a beautiful multiuse space downtown and, among other benefits, given us a venue to host the Lexington Learning Cooperative for free children's activities each week starting this Saturday, as well as many other special events, cooking demonstrations, and guest appearances. Despite dicey weather, Sunday markets have had great turnouts in both customers and vendors and it's easy to see how that market is growing. More vendors are turning up on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week, so don't forget to shop the S. Broadway and Maxwell market too!

As always, we thank you for your support and can't wait to see how this market season continues to unfold.

Sarah Buzogany

Lexington Farmers' Market Assistant Manager

WEEKLY RECIPE

May is "Beef Month" in Kentucky (see News Flash below) so come to the market early to get some asparagus and green onions for this recipe.

Sesame-Ginger Beef and Asparagus Stir-Fry

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean top sirloin, sliced into thin strips
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 4 tablespoons peanut oil or vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 teaspoon oriental sesame oil
  • 1 pound thin asparagus, trimmed, cut on diagonal into 1 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1 small bunch green onions, cut on diagonal into 1 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons minced peeled fresh ginger
  • 2/3 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce (nam pla)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Preparation

Combine beef and cornstarch in large bowl. Using hands, rub to coat well.

Heat 2 tablespoons peanut oil in large skillet over high heat. Working in batches, add beef in single layer and cook, undisturbed, until meat begins to blacken on bottom, about 1 1/2 minutes. Turn over and cook until second side browns, about 1 minute. Transfer beef to large plate.

Heat remaining 2 tablespoons peanut oil and 1 teaspoon sesame oil in same skillet over medium-high heat. Add asparagus, green onions, and ginger; sauté until vegetables are tinged brown and crisp-tender, about 2 minutes. Add broth, fish sauce, and sugar; bring to boil. Return beef to skillet and cook until sauce is slightly thickened, about 1 minute. Transfer to platter and serve.

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

NEWS FLASH AND SPECIAL EVENTS

NEWS FLASH...

Let's Get Grillin' - It's Beef Month

Governor Proclaims May Beef Month in Kentucky

It's that time of year again.  The temperatures are rising outside and Kentuckians are lighting up their grills to cook beef.  Governor Steve Beshear recognizes this American tradition by proclaiming May 2010 Beef Month in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

"I urge all Kentuckians to support Kentucky's beef cattle industry, and to salute the cattle farmers for their contribution to Kentucky's agricultural and rural economy during the month of May," said Governor Beshear. "The Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund has helped in making this industry top notch with more than $50 million going into projects related to the cattle industry in Kentucky over the last decade."

Beef is good - and good for Kentucky's economy. From cattle farmers to feed manufacturers, equipment dealers and food marketers, thousands of people play a role in bringing beef from pasture to plate. In fact, beef farmers generated $574.4 million in cash receipts from the sale of cattle and calves in 2008. Kentucky has more than 2.3 million head of cattle on Kentucky farms.  As one of the largest segments of American agriculture, the beef industry ranks third largest among agricultural commodities in Kentucky.

Beef plays a key role in a healthy diet. Emerging research continues to support findings that protein, like that enjoyed in lean beef, can help people maintain healthy weight, build muscle and gain the energy they need for active lives. Since there are 29 cuts of beef that meet government guidelines for lean, consumers have plenty of healthy beef options.

Visit www.kybeef.com for ways to celebrate beef month or join in a Beef Council promotional event.  For more information on Kentucky's Beef Industry contact Alison Smith with the Kentucky Beef Council at (859) 278-0899.

This lot is generously provided to us by Central Parking and for this we are extremely grateful.  Beyond that garage, all street parking is free on Saturdays and there are also several pay lots in the area.

Finally, if you have ever lost items at any of our markets and they have not been returned, please check with Jeff, the market manager, during market hours or by phone at (859) 608-2655.

HERE'S A BIT OF WHAT YOU'LL FIND AT MARKET THIS WEEK...

VITOS ITALIAN SAUSAGE

Woodford County

The wait is over!  VITO'S ITALIAN SAUSAGE is in the HOUSE.  Come visit us at the Lexington Farmers Market across from Oliva Bella.  We will have mild & robust in links and bulk!

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

We want to thank all of our new customers at the Lexington Farmers' Market.  The weekend of May 15-16 was the best two days of sales we have ever had!  The whole family worked in Lexington - Clay and I on Saturday, and Dorthy, Maria and Hannah on Sunday.  We hope that you all are enjoying our pasture raised pork.

This past week has been an experience in pasture raising pork.  As you know, we have a 100 acre hill farm within a stone's throw of the Kentucky River in Garrard County.   I said I'd be keeping you posted with information from the farm as the year progresses.  Well, one of our Tamworth sows has decided to leave home - 100 acres was not enough.  She is getting close to farrowing (having her babies) and has taken up residence in a hollow on a neighbor's farm.  Saturday while we were at the market, she ate a whole Hibiscus plant (roots and all) from the neighbor's garden!   Every time we go to get her, she runs back down in that hollow where only a pig can go!  This week we will have to try and prove that we are smarter than the pig and get her home.  Ask us this weekend and we'll let you know who is winning the battle.

We hope to see you this weekend.  We are on Upper St. on Saturday and on the very end of the Market in front of Sloan's on Sunday.  We have the best pork you have ever tasted.  Come look through our recipe collection and find just what you need for a meal in the coming weeks.

We invite you to visit our website (which we will be updating soon) www.hillsideheritagefarm.com and also ask you to join us on Facebook where I plan to start doing regular updates.

Our entire family looks forward to getting to know each of you.

John Contini

RAGGARD CREEKSIDE FARM

Shelby County

So far this year, we've had no "animal" encounters! The rain did cause the creek to come spilling out onto our field. The "rapids" (as they appeared to us after all the work!) took out some cabbage plants and covered some pea plants with debris.  (It also included the neighbors son's kid basketball goal!)

We will have delicious Shell Out Peas and Sweet Sugar Snap Peas this week. Also, Leaf, Romain and Butterhead Lettuce. Kale and collar Green are ready!! Green onions, and tomato plants. ( Still have popular heirloom like Black Russian, Cherokee Purple and Brandywine. Also lots of Super Tasty, Big Beef, and Beefsteak plants.  Some bell pepper plants also... Some good tomatoes, beans, and corn from our Southern States (only until ours come in!)

Come see us downtown at back of pavilion on road (red and white camper on white truck). You can't miss and the tomato plants!!  We'll also be on Southland on Sundays at end of first row (near Sloan's)

"FRESH LOCAL HONEY" by NICK and BEV NICKELS

Fayette County

We WILL BE at the Lexington Farmer's Market downtown on Saturday, May 22nd and at Southland Drive on Sunday, May 23rd if it doesn't rain.

We offer the highest quality raw clover honey, pure beeswax candles and pollen.

Our delicious raw honey comes only from the fields and orchards surrounding Lexington, Kentucky. Our raw honey is unheated, and unprocessed so that all its attributes are fully preserved. Honeycomb in a jar with strained honey is also available.

Our candles are 100% unbleached, all natural beeswax. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. They contain no toxins or soot common to commercially produced paraffin candles. They are the candles of choice for those who have asthma, allergies, or headaches due to paraffin or scented candles. They are naturally fragrant with a subtle honey scent. They are made with filtered beeswax; so they produce a bright, clear, steady flame and beautiful illumination.

Bee pollen is nature's most complete food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and a complete source of protein. It can give us that extra edge to stay healthy. An all-around nutritional supplement, bee pollen is ideal for daily use. The bee pollen granules can be sprinkled over salad or cereal, added to liquids or eaten as is.

BlueMoon Farm ***Sustainably Grown***

Madison County

Well, since May 1 we've had over 16 inches of rain here at Blue Moon Farm!  We were actually hoping for a little last weekend... just a LITTLE!  We got 4 inches.  No damage this time, and we're seeing the new LETTUCE patch sprouting already.  This cool weather will help a lot.

It's GARLIC SCAPE time!!!  Remember those succulent, garlicky spears?  Perfect for steaming in with the fresh organic ASPARAGUS we've got from Colcord Farm in Paris, or chopping into a stir fry, salad or onto your pasta!  They're not around for a very long time, so get them while you can!

We'll still have a week or two's supply of  BABY GREEN GARLIC, so be sure you get your fill of it too, or you'll have to wait til next spring!  I've been grinding more GARLIC POWDER this week, so we'll be well stocked this weekend.......regular and hickory smoked.

Speaking of smoked.......we're now carrying a SMOKED SEA SALT, SMOKED CRACKED PEPPERCORNS, and SMOKED PAPRIKA from Bourbon Barrel Foods in Louisville.  You can get them individually, or save $$ by buying all three.  They smoke their products over bourbon barrel wood fires!  We also have their KENTUCKYAKI SAUCE made with KY sorghum, and flavored with KY Bourbon, WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE "mellowed" in bourbon barrels, and the only SMALL BATCH SOY SAUCE in the USA, made from KY-grown non-GMO soybeans, and aged in bourbon barrels.

Our POTTED HERBS are ready for your patio or kitchen garden.  Nothing like a little fresh ROSEMARY and THYME on your next roasted chicken, or FRESH BASIL with your GOAT CHEESE FOCCACIA PIZZA.   We will also have an endangered ECHINACEA, sweet TARRAGON on your salmon, CHOCOLATE MINT to spice up your coffee, and STEVIA, nature's low cal sweetener.

The NEW ARTISAN SOURDOUGH BREAD from Sunrise sold like crazy last Saturday!  We'll have some more this week, but supply will be limited!  Shop early so you're not disappointed!  We'll have lots of other breads too, like the favorites HERB & CHEESE, BLACK OLIVE & ROSEMARY, and 8-GRAIN.  This week we'll have CHOCOLATE CHIP-LAVENDER MUFFINS and BLACKBERRY MUFFINS as well as the other pastries.  Blue Moon GARLIC-TOPPED FOCCACIA, and GARLIC BAGELS and for the adventurous among you, GARLIC CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES!  Be brave!  Try one!  They're great!!

Stone Cross Farm raises PASTURED PORK using no steroids or antibiotics and provides us with a wide selection of delicious products for your family.  Check out their website www.stonecrossfarm.com to read about them and their thoughts on farming.  They have some great stuff for barbeques this summer....all kinds of SAUSAGES- POLISH, BRATS, ITALIAN, ENGLISH BANGERS and KNOCKWURST, or some nice PORK CHOPS or TENDERLOIN to throw on the grill.

If BEEF is more to your liking, we have Colcord Farm's GRASS FINISHED BEEF all sorts of ways.....from melt-in-your-mouth FILET MIGNON, to STEAKS, ROASTS and BURGER.

This week we'll be sampling Kenny's TOMATO-BASIL CHEDDAR CHEESE, KY ROSE (a mild bleu) and HORSERADISH CHEDDAR.  Of course we'll also have samples of our own GARLIC SCAPE PESTO too.  By the way, you can now get a pizza at the market toped with our GARLIC SCAPE PESTO!!  Look for Hardwood Pizza Company's booth!  Or how about a Fried Green Tomato and Bacon Sandwich topped with Garlic Scape Pesto mayo from Cookin' Up KY?  Yummy!!

As always, we welcome your special orders at garlic@bluemoongarlic.com

We'll see you Saturday at Cheapside, Sunday at Southland Drive.

BlEUGRASS CHEVRE

Fayette/Clark County

We'll be at the Saturday market with plenty of  fresh  chevre.  Chipotle and cracked black pepper are gaining on garlic chive, so we'll have more of those two flavors this week.  The chocolate has been a big hit, and we have been experimenting with different kinds of fancy cocoas. Surprisingly, good old Hershey's has topped the taste test with the richest chocolate flavor. An insider tip from within the market:  Try the chocolate chevre spread on hot waffles,  then top with sliced strawberries and maple syrup. Man oh man!

We'll also have Feta this week, if we don't eat it all, that is!  We've been eaating big Portobello mushrooms layered with fresh spinach from the market,  then topped with chopped tomatoes and onions and lots of crumbled feta.  Drizzle with a little olive oil and bake  at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes.  It's healthy, low calorie and absolutely addictive.

If you are a follower of  Cornbread Suppers - or would like to be (cornbreadsuppers.com) -  the downtown Monday night dinners are taking a field trip to Bleugrass  Chevre on Memorial Day at 6 p.m. Our own Abigail will be a special guest, and she will be signing her new book, Death by a Honeybee.  More details to follow.  The goats will also be on hand and will be happy to sign autographs!

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!
