Your weekly market newsletter!
The Lexington Farmers' Market May 5, 2010
Greetings!

I would first like to thank you all for your patience with the newPavilionsletter for the past year. I know many of you were not receiving it on a regular basis and we hope we've finally found a way to make sure everyone gets it every week. We may continue tweaking the format for the next few weeks, but I hope to have a crisp, easy to read newsletter in your Inbox every week from here on out.

As I write this, the sky outside is black and threatening, but the forecast looks great for Thursday market and there's no rain expected this weekend. If you've yet to make it to a market, I'd say this week is a great time to check things out. If you've been a regular, thank you and we hope to continue seeing you! Spring is such an exciting time to shop with new things coming into season every week! Lettuces, strawberries, green onions, and asparagus are all delicious signs that the growing season is gearing up. We also have honey, wine, cheeses, meat, eggs, baked goods, specialty items, and hot foods prepared at the market.  There really is something for everyone at the Lexington Farmers' Market and it's a fun place to shop and support your local economy!

The Fayette Alliance is Lexington's ONLY land-use advocacy organization that regularly educates and lobbies local government for a sustainable growth model that benefits all of us.

We believe that preserving our signature Bluegrass landscape, creating a dynamic and equitable cityscape through infill redevelopment, and improving our natural waterways by fixing our sanitary sewer and stormwater systems are key components to achieving our economic and environmental promise here in Lexington-Fayette County.

We are an alliance of citizens from the entire community, including stakeholders from the agricultural, neighborhood, and infill sectors. We are a united voice for responsible growth, and only weigh-in on those land-use issues that have countywide implications. Together we can chart our future, and positively impact local zoning decisions-the very building blocks of our community.

If you want a better quality of life for all of us, please join The Fayette Alliance today for free.  Visit www.fayettealliance.com for more information.

INFORMATION FROM OUR SPONSOR WUKY

WUKY was founded in 1941 as the radio voice of the University of Kentucky. Our mission then-as now-was to bring information and enlightenment to the people of central Kentucky. Back then we even hauled radios to remote areas so people could hear our programs. Today we're pioneering the use of digital technology to bring multiple streams of great non-commercial programming to this region. Whether you're a Lexington resident or a visitor, please take a moment this weekend to tune your radio to WUKY at 91.3FM, and, when you get home, stream our signal on line at www.wuky.org. There you'll enjoy NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk and Fresh Air all supplemented by award-winning WUKY news. On weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m., you'll hear a unique blend of music that we call "Adult Rock", featuring a wide variety of artists from Talking Heads to Norah Jones to Lucinda Williams. In addition, our weekend schedule includes everything from A Prairie Home Companion to the big bands, the Grateful Dead Hour, and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. WUKY 91.3FM truly has something for everyone. We are able to accomplish all this only because of community support. Income from this and other special events, underwriting by area businesses, and contributions from individual donors account for over two-thirds of our budget so please pledge now and thank you so much for supporting WUKY.

"FRESH LOCAL HONEY" by NICK and BEV NICKELS

Fayette County

We WILL BE at the Lexington Farmer's Market downtown on Saturday, May 15th and at Southland Drive on Sunday, May 16th if it doesn't rain.

We offer the highest quality raw clover honey, pure beeswax candles and pollen.

Our delicious raw honey comes only from the fields and orchards surrounding Lexington, Kentucky. Our raw honey is unheated, and unprocessed so that all its attributes are fully preserved. Honeycomb in a jar with strained honey is also available.

Our candles are 100% unbleached, all natural beeswax. Beeswax candles are long lasting and clean burning. They contain no toxins or soot common to commercially produced paraffin candles. They are the candles of choice for those who have asthma, allergies, or headaches due to paraffin or scented candles. They are naturally fragrant with a subtle honey scent. They are made with filtered beeswax; so they produce a bright, clear, steady flame and beautiful illumination.

Bee pollen is nature's most complete food, rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and a complete source of protein. It can give us that extra edge to stay healthy. An all-around nutritional supplement, bee pollen is ideal for daily use. The bee pollen granules can be sprinkled over salad or cereal, added to liquids or eaten as is.

Hardwood Pizza Company is a small, progressive pizza company that is literally out of the box.  You gotta see it to believe it!  Our mobile wood-fired oven cooks authentic Neapolitan style gourmet pizzas at over 900 degrees!  Whether it's a classic Margherita pizza, a Garlic Scape Pesto Pizza or Goat Cheese, Walnut + Onion pizza...watch as your custom pie is prepared, cooked and served piping hot in a matter of minutes from start to finish.  The tastes and scents created by the heat of the wood fire produce a truly unique and original treat - an inspired blend of spices, fresh farmer's market toppings and tangy sauce scattered over a light crisp, chewy crust cooked to perfection.   At Hardwood Pizza Company, we interpret old world cooking traditions for modern times.

We'll make our first market appearance this weekend. Once the sidewalk is finished we'll be right in front of the Old Courthouse, but come look for us on Upper St. this week. We look forward to meeting you!

Come by and see us!!

Ed and Jackie Raggard

BlueMoon Farm ***Sustainably Grown***

Madison County

What a fun day we had last Saturday at the market!  Jean's sister Ruth was visiting from Atlanta, and worked with our crew for the day.  The day turned out to be super busy after a slow start, so we were glad to have an extra pair of hands to help, as well as just being able to spend time together!  It was fun to be able to introduce her to some of the names she's been hearing about from us for years!  Leo treated the ladies to delicious strawberry and custard crepes from Chef Jacob at Cookin' Up KY!!  YUM!!  Be sure to try one this week!

We've got some GREAT news!!  Steveo at Sunrise Bakery has started making an ARTISAN SOURDOUGH BREAD for us!  We've had so many requests for it through the years, and are thrilled that he has found time enough in his schedule to fit it in!  It's a beautiful boule, with a yummy chewy crust, and it keeps a long time!  Of course we'll have all your other Sunrise favorites too, including GARLIC-TOPPED FOCCACIA, those BIG CINNAMON BUNS, MUFFINS and our signature GARLIC CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE!

Since AP ROOTS Restaurant has closed its doors, you'll have to make your own gourmet pizza with our GARLIC SCAPE PESTO and your other favorite toppings!  There's no limit to the varieties you can make to please your whole family!

Our new patch of SALAD GREENS and SPINACH have been seeded and had a little rain to get them sprouting!  It broke our hearts to lose the first patch to the KY River flood last weekend, but that's farming!  More losses become apparent as the days go by.  We lost all the big old ROSEMARY plants and SAGE plants we had used to take cuttings from for cut herbs at the market, and a beehive given to us by Abigail.  She says it's possible that the bees left the hive before drowning and she has given us some pheromone to try to lure them into a catch box.  I hope she's right about them, and not just trying to make us feel better!

The Bourbon Barrel Foods SAUCES and SEASONINGS we've just started carrying have been met with great excitement by our customers.  Some of them were already familiar with the SMALL BATCH SOY SAUCE cured in bourbon barrels, but didn't realize they also make WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE "mellowed" in bourbon barrels, and a KY teriyaki called KENTUCKYAKI.  We've also got their bourbon wood fire SMOKED SEA SALT, CRACKED PEPPERCORNS and PAPRIKA!

Colcord Farm, in Bourbon County, will be sending us another load of their sustainably raised ASPARAGUS, so fat and delicious, and we'll have a good supply of their BLUE GRASS FINISHED BEEF.  Beef as nature intended, these sleek animals never eat grain, only the lush grasses on which their bodies were designed to thrive.

STONE CROSS FARM has filled our freezer with their KY. PROUD PASTURE-RAISED PORK, including a variety of EUROPEAN-STYLE SAUSAGES (no MSG!) and their WOOD SMOKED BACON, featured on Chef Jacobs FRIED GREEN TOMATO AND BACON SANDWICHES.  They also provide their HANDMADE SOAPS, made with food grade ingredients.

We will have an excellent selection of our SUSTAINABLY GROWN HERB PLANTS, from BASIL, to MINT, to SAGE.  Come check our plants before you plant your herb garden.

KENNY'S FARMHOUSE CHEESES rounds out our offerings this week, come by and sample 3 varieties.

As always, we welcome your special orders at garlic@bluemoongarlic.com

We'll see you Saturday at Cheapside, Sunday at Southland Drive.

BlEUGRASS CHEVRE

Fayette/Clark County

We'll see you at the market on Saturday, and our cheeses should possess  a distinctive "terroir " this week - or flavor of their environment.  But only because the goats have extremely mischievous.

Sometimes cheeses are described as tasting like particular wildflowers, herbs and grasses, and I have to confess I'm not sure if this is just a romantic notion, wishful thinking or is really legitimate.  But this week should be the true  test  because  all 40  goats made two  brazen escapes from their pasture  and consumed not only bushels and bushels of honeysuckle, but  ventured to the house  and ate all the geraniums, peonies and roses, and nibbled the tips of the hanging ferns so they are all squared off now.  Needless to say, they all had smiles on their faces as they waddled back to their barn.

So I guess we will have honeysuckle flavored cheeses this week with nuances of geraniums, peonies and roses!

Cheers!

Susan at gourmetgoats@msn.com

LA PETITE CREPERIE

Fayette County

La Petite Crêperie brings a little taste of France to the Bluegrass

The idea for opening a walk-up crêperie was hatched many years ago when I was a student in France.   After discovering crêpes they became a staple of my diet because as a hot, quick meal they fit right in with the poor student budget.    The best part was that they were never far away.   Walk-up crêpe windows are like hot dog stands in New York; they are everywhere.

My husband Mark and I took many more trips to France and ate countless more crêpes.  We decided that the good people of Lexington should be able enjoy them here.   After years of tweaking batters and looking for just the right griddle, and after serving hundreds of crêpes to our friends, family and my French students, we think we've hit on a good combination.

La Petite Crêperie hopes to recreate the experience of ordering a French crêpe à emporter.  Half of the fun is watching, smelling, and anticipating how delicious it's going to be.  Our batter contains only eggs from the market, Weisenberger white and wheat flours, Kentucky produced whole milk, water, canola oil, sugar and salt. Our sweet crêpe fillings include honey and jam from Farmers' Market vendors, and the butter and sugar crêpes are made with homemade butter from the market.   We also make a hearty breakfast crêpe with market eggs, cheese and vegetables.   Our menu will vary as other fruits, berries and vegetables come into season.

La Petite Crêperie will be open most Saturdays at Cheapside from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm and most Sundays at Southland from 10:00 until 2:00.You can visit our website, www.petitecreperie.com to find out exactly where we will be and when.  Bon appétit!

ABBONDANZA

Fayette County

CIAO LEXINGTON!!  We are back at the downtown market this Saturday.  Where to find us?  Look for the Italian flag flying 20 feet over our booth.

We'll have our extra virgin olive oils from Italy, our 8 year aged Balsamico, sauces, Italian pastas and Breads.  Come let us take you on a delicious tour of Italy right here in Lexington!  (of course, if it rains, please come see us at the shop!)

Before or after the market, come by our shop at 406 South Broadway for a shot of Cuban coffee, stuffed ravioli, delightful biscotti (which are perfect for dunking in your Cuban coffee) all made in house by our own Chef Stacey.

Call the shop early in the week to order and pick up our weekly "la Cena per la Casa)" dinner to take home.  Call ahead to order, let us know what day and time you will come through (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) and we'll have it packaged and ready with your name on it.  Plan early as we are only making a limited number each week.  Call 859 983 3567 for details.

We will be at the market Saturday 8 am to 1 pm and at the shop Thursday and Fridays, 10 am to 6pm and Saturdays 10 am to 4 pm.

HILLSIDE HERITAGE FARM

Garrard County

Greetings from one on the new members of the Lexington Farmers' Market.  I wanted to introduce ourselves to those of you who are friends of the LFM and receive this newsletter. We are a family farm in Garrard County.  My wife teaches Kindergarten in Danville, I teach Math and Introductory Computer classes at BCTC, Maria lives in Lexington and does landscaping and is tending our apple orchard, Clay is a sophomore at Berea College studying Agriculture, and Hannah is in Middle School in Garrard County, both of them help me with our farm chores.

We have a 100 acre hill farm within a stones throw of the Kentucky River. I just returned from my morning chores with the joy that comes from new life.  We were blessed with a new litter of pigs this morning.  This makes a total of 71 piglets that have been born this spring and we are only about half way through our spring farrowing.  We expect to have approximately 150 piglets this spring and then to repeat that number again this fall.  I'll be keeping you posted with information from the farm as the year progresses.  Our herd is made up primarily of Tamworths and Berkshires with a sprinkling of Large Black sows - all heritage breeds of hogs that do not thrive under the confinement conditions of modern factory farming.  We have found the ideal farm raised meat hog to be a cross between these breeds.  It gives us a pig that thrives when living outside on grass and dirt, grows at a moderate rate so that the meat is tasteful, and has just the right amount of fat.

With that information you have probably already determined that we are the market's new pork producers.  We will be offering you the best pasture-raised, antibiotic, hormone and steroid free pork you have ever tasted.  We will have homegrown vegetables and fruits as the season progresses, but our emphasis will always be on providing you with the type of pork that is hard to find anywhere else.

We invite you to visit our website (which we will be updating soon) www.hillsideheritagefarm.com and also ask you to join us on Facebook where I plan to start doing regular updates.

Our entire family looks forward to getting to know each of you.

John Contini
