A Different Kind of Vendor Spotlight
 | | Michael Clark, Planet Earth |
As many of you know, our friend, Michael Clark, owner of Planet Earth Diversified, has been a long-standing and hard-working vendor at the Charlottesville City Market for many years. On the evening of June 29th, Central Virginia was hit with a major storm that knocked power out to thousands, including Michael's farm in Stanardsville. While attending to the generator (necessary to keep his valuable crops tended!) it exploded, and Michael suffered serious burns to his face and arms. Thankfully, he'll be alright once he has time to heal. But who has time to heal when you have a farm and crops to tend?
Michael missed the City Market on June 30th because he was in the emergency room - all the while protesting that he had a refrigerated truck, loaded with produce to sell! Michael and Leslie had to scramble to deliver that produce to local restaurant accounts, deal with his injuries, and if all THAT weren't enough, the greenhouse is fire-damaged and needs to be rebuilt. Oh, yeah... and all this while it was 100 degrees outside and the power's been out.
Market Central set up a ChipIn page for online contributions to help Planet Earth recoup and rebuild - and to give Michael and Leslie a little recovery fund to do what needs doing to keep their farm in operation. We've nearly reached the goal, and we'll be taking down the page soon, so if you'd like to make a contribution, please do it soon here. Thank you to everyone who has already contributed -- the kind hearts and genuine concern of the market community has been wonderful, and we know that Michael and Leslie appreciate your support.
Planet Earth WORK CREW: Many customers have expressed an interest in forming a work crew at Planet Earth, and fellow vendor Tom Cervelloni ("The Donut Guy") is organizing. If you're able to head out to the farm in Stanardsville on Thursday morning, July 12, and lend a hand, please email Tom for specifics. The crew will be cutting and clearing trees that have fallen on crops. Volunteers should have gloves and work shoes, and bring water and a packed lunch. Thank you in advance, kind people!
