Client's Chronicle: Greenbank Project
Greenbank, Whidbey Island, WA

About This Project
FabCab is pleased to announce a new project breaking ground soon on Whidbey Island. This 882 sq. ft. 2-bedroom getaway cabin will be perched on a bluff, overlooking the Saratoga Passage.  It will be oriented toward the south and have a large wall of windows to take advantage of the spectacular water views.

Client Testimonial
"Our dream design included a small footprint, open floor plan, high ceilings, windows galore, and environmental kindness overall.  FabCab design provided all that AND smart and genuine people to work with throughout the process.  Nothing but good.

FabCab Tips: Japan's Innovative Design
TOTO toilet

FabCab's founder, Emory Baldwin, recently traveled to Japan on behalf of TOTO, the world's largest plumbing manufacturer to see their innovative products, as well as several other companies' research centers. He was part of a delegation of 16 U.S. architects that were selected by TOTO and the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

There is a great effort in Japan to find ways to address their 'aging crisis.'  From that impetus, are springing many ingenious products.  Every major Japanese company seems to have its own research center that is studying how they can make their products work better for people of any age or ability.  TOTO leads this movement within Japan in their dedication to the concept of Universal Design (making products more useable by a wide range of people).

It was inspiring to the entire U.S. group to see that the Universal Design movement was so pervasive throughout Japan. TOTO's generosity and hospitality brought together experts of diverse backgrounds and facilitated a meaningful discussion which helped each of the participants to have a broader understanding of Universal Design.  The trip served as a catalyst to bring Universal Design to the forefront of architectural consciousness in the United States and a call to action to include socially responsible design as a critical component of all good design.

Emory is grateful and honored to have been part of what is was surely a pivotal moment in the history of Universal Design, at least as it relates to architecture in the US.
