A mother is the truest friend we have,

when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of  prosperity;

when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us,

still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.
~Washington Irving

Spiritual Cleansing

"As you believe, so you become. As you become, so you believe."  ~Unknown

The month of May is women's empowerment month and also the time when we recognize the hard work and dedication that women put into their careers, families and helping others.  We do this by celebrating  Mother's Day.  I've featured some wonderful events for this month that focus on empowerment, re-inventing yourself, healing, health and wellness. I know we all can use some encouragement to motivate us to live a more fulfilling life.

However, in order to have a fulfilling life, we must take proper care of ourselves. It's so important to eat right, exercise, get a sufficient amount of rest and most important, be spiritually balanced and stress free. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we didn't carry the weight of the world on our shoulders? As difficult as it may sound, it's possible to achieve the kind of lifestyle we desire.  It takes focus, discipline and determination, but anything is possible when we put our minds to it.

I find that when I have spiritual balance I am very productive and feel a sense of peace. I'm optimistic about life and unstoppable when it comes to achieving my goals.  Then the question becomes, why then do I fall off track when I know what works for me? The answer that comes to mind is what a very wise woman once told me, "Sometimes part of the journey is going off our paths then getting back on in order to complete the journey."

Just recently, I found myself in a dark place, feeling trapped and disconnected because I knew that I had been making careless decisions, which brought about unpleasant consequences.  Although, I continued to make progress and move forward, I began losing touch with God.  When I am not harmoniously in tuned with God, everything in my life goes haywire.  When my heart, mind,
and spirit are all in the right place, my life has balance.

My meltdown  was gradual,  I had stopped feeding my spirit with
daily prayer.  Instead of listening for God's voice, I began forging ahead aimlessly on my own.  Eventually, everything came to a screeching halt and I had to make the decision about which road I was going to take.  Feeding our spirits produces the same results in the same way we feed our bodies.  What we consume in our minds and bodies will determine the outcome.  In just a short time, my life was filled with turmoil and chaos leaving me spiritually bankrupt.

I knew right away that what I needed was spiritual cleansing.  This meant that I had to rid myself of all of the negative thoughts, self-perceptions and behaviors that were not serving me positively.  The negative place where I allowed myself to go to was keeping me in bondage.  I had placed myself in my own self-prison. My mind held my body, spirit and thoughts captive and stole my self-confidence and inner peace. The good news is that I am the judge and the jury.  I have the power to take off the shackles and handcuffs when I choose because I hold the key.  I can unlock my cell and walk out at anytime and be free.  I needed to nurture myself, stop punishing myself and reconnect
with God.

In closing, I've renewed my relationship with God with a conscious decision to pray daily.  I stay mindful of the importance of nurturing  and empowering myself to leave no room for self-doubt.  I continue to remind myself that I am a powerful, responsible and capable woman!

Whenever you find yourself in a dark place, remember that you hold the key to changing your outcome.
Always believe in the power of GOD and the power in YOU!

Advocate Quasona Cobb

Quasona Cobb

I am a 21 year old student and advocate fighting against domestic violence and sexual abuse.  I advocate because of my own personal experience in a relationship that lasted from my mid-teenage years into my early twenties. In the winter of 2011 I sat down with Glamour Magazine to contribute to their piece on dating violence.  In the article I shared about the abuse I experienced and the tragic turn that it took in December, 2010.  I also talk about my will to survive and I how I am overcoming the most traumatic experience that's ever happened in my life. The article will be featured in Glamour's June, 2011 issue, which will be on sale in the first week of May, 2011. I will also be featured in an online special, "Tell Somebody" with other survivors of dating violence. I am also currently seeking opportunities to work with organizations to advocate, educate and prevent dating violence in relationships, with the focus on young adults.

"I feel God puts you in a situation where he tests your faith and strengthens you to survive and overcome it.  It's my duty to share my testimony to help other girls see the signs and protect themselves from something like this happening to them. You have no idea who you can reach out to and how you can help someone else that is going through the same things that you've overcome. I think this [advocacy] is my destiny and life mission, so I'm putting my heart and everything I have into this."

I WILL SURVIVE

Poet, Maurie B. Handsome

I've placed my faith in a face I've never seen before because I know in my mind I will survive.

I am looking to the hills with my head held high, Lord, I know in my mind I will survive. My heart feels no different; no kidding, I know I've been through a lot but at least I'm still living.

I'm still driven, still smile through the tears, as I stroll the valley because I have
no fear. I'm going to weather the storm, I know I am, I'm going to make it to
the top, I know I am.

I'm the engine that could, I think I can, I'm Dr. Martin Luther King,
I dreamed I am.

When it's all said and done and at the end of the day; no pain, no gain, I'm game, let us pray.

Prayer:

Psalms - King James Version

91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under
the shadow of the almighty.

91:2  I will say of the Lord , He is my refuge and my fortress; my God in Him
I will trust.

A Whisper To A Scream

A Whisper To A Scream

Author, Elissa Gabrielle

Peace In The Storm Publishing LLC

The colors of love comes in several shades for Queen Thomas, and has been prevalent on her canvas of life as she continues to paint by the numbers. Successful beyond measure, but flawed to a degree where bright hues tend to fade a bit, happiness should be much more than an illusion. Queen is a young African American defense attorney passionately advocating justice for her brown-skinned clients, despite being subjected by black and blue bruises from her ex-boyfriend. Then there are the shades of gray that matters most when trying to balance the memorable scales of a loving relationship with a father that raised her as a single parent. Along with that are the dark clouds of uncertainty accentuating the need to suppress the void of missing the touches that only a mother can manifest.  Is a successful but committed relationship so hard to fathom where integrity and faithfulness is not compromised? What is it about men that they fail to understand when dealing with a woman who only wants to be loved? The whispers get louder with promises of primal screams as the colors take on a different tint as the plot thickens. Enter Quincy Hughes, a handsome doctor easy on the eyes but with an underlying intrigue that allows curiosity to kill much more than the cat. Quincy is on a mission...He relentlessly pursues her despite his mystique, and forces Queen to question the taboo concept of accepted love vs. forbidden fruit; and whether there's a future in it for her. Is she ready to tackle the relevancy of this different persuasion? And what about her ex-lover -- will he settle for second best and allow Queen to pursue matters of the heart, albeit with someone else?

Sensual and brimming with sexuality, this heart-wrenching drama is written in a fashion that can only be delivered by Elissa Gabrielle, the best-selling author of Good to the Last Drop. A Whisper To a
Scream is groundbreaking fiction. A sexy, moving and riveting tale that will pull you deep into an unforgettable erotic, socially-conscious, and emotionally-charged ride.

Tonya and Gary are dealing with trust in their marriage
and must come to terms with major issues that are adversely affecting their family as a whole. Finding their way back to the loving arms of one another has proven to be a difficult task.

Will Denise stop making excuses for the man she loves, or will she continue to allow abuse to shatter her life? Will Tonya and Gary return to each other and trust be restored in their marriage? As every act of abuse takes away a small part of them, will there be nothing left to take?

The Putting Away is a heart-wrenching, yet formidable tale of how the power of God can heal any situation, even those that are put to the test.
