Greetings!
Lately we have been talking about sustaining happiness and the subtle connection in relationships.
We have found that it has as much to do with the relationship we have with ourselves, as it does with the relationships we have with others!
The authentic heart connection we all desire, comes from our ability to perceive and respond to our own inner messages with simultaneous awareness of those around us.
In other words, in relationship... it's not about pleasing others and it's not 'just about me'!
Learning how to really hear/feel what someone is saying and to really be heard/felt by those you care about, is a skill that can be learned!
I have designed a very special advanced retreat that offers a tune up for inner balance and includes advanced training in living with simultaneous awareness of ourselves and others.
The intensive program is only offered once a year, and this year the focus is on the Sacred Dance of Relationship, so be sure to check it out! It's called Finding Inner Balance and you can read more about it below.
Today's article is Part 5 of My Sabbatical and it is about simultaneous awareness with my horse on the morning of the day I was finally ready to ride!
I am deeply appreciative that you are joining me in this wonderful journey! Please remember to send this on to anyone you feel might enjoy and benefit from our sacred work with the horses.
Go to Facebook and click on 'Like' at the top of the page for daily updates.
Have a wonderful week and thank you so much for your support. As always, I love hearing from you!
With Warmest Regards, Barbara Alexander Epona Ridge

- Mindfulness Practices, Living Fully in the Moment
Here you will bask in the progression from personal alignment and inner awareness to the advanced levels of healthy communication and connection to others.

We start with a focus on the lower energy centers, the first through fourth Chakras which help us understand and value emotions, our sense of security, honor in relationships, care of oneself and self confidence.
We continue into the 5th, 6th and 7th energy centers working with our sense of choice and strength of intention, personal expression, inner peace, and the use of personal power to create.
The advanced experiential sessions enhance our use of personal energy, direction, projection and control as we learn how to live with consensual leadership and experience the ultimate in relationship.

It's All About Relationship
July 23-25, 2010 (Friday 7-9pm, Saturday or Sunday 9:30-4:30)
Learning About Connection (A fun retreat for anyone in a relationship)
"What does he think he's going to do with that whip?" | Join us for a fun introduction to learning the art of healthy connection, a skill that can change your life for the better! Studies have shown that 90% of communication is non-verbal, yet most of us spend our time getting all of our information from the 10% of verbal communication that we are aware of. There is an art to the sacred dance of connection between humans that the horses are graciously teaching us. It is the subtle realization of the non-verbal world combined with simultaneous awareness of others. It is the foundation for healthy leadership. Horses help us to learn where clear communication can occur in different situations, in addition to teaching us how to 'just be' with someone without needing to fix or change them. You will learn some tools to help you hear your own truth and to be able to stand in it without crossing other people's boundaries or having other people cross yours.
You will learn about simultaneous awareness and how to honor each other on your path, opening the doors for two balanced individuals to be together in one relationship...
It is an equine facilitated human skills course that can benefit everyone!
Through individual experiences with horses and each other, we will have fun learning about what is working as well as how we can be even better!

Feature Article: What Is Anxiety Telling Me?
The Sabbatical: Part 5
Zorro picture taken by Julie Azar | This is one of a multi-part journey from My Sabbatical, where I learned so much about being a real friend to myself and in the relationship with my horses. I hope you enjoy it! Barbara Alexander
Part 5: Today, I Want to Ride
It's spring and the sun is streaming through the leaves in the trees. It makes shadows and plays tricks on the eyes as the wind blows and seems to create moving things on the ground.
Here we were again, walking down that sandy-dirt road that led through the forest from their paddock to the arenas, only this time I wasn't lost and it wasn't pitch dark... this time the sun was out and I knew where we were going.
The sounds of wildlife were everywhere... the birds singing... the squirrels rustling in the leaves...
It was almost blissful, until - within a split moment - I felt a shock in my gut and a sudden shift of energy.
Zorro stopped, his head held high and his ears turned forward. He was standing at full alert... his eyes were so wide I could see the whites. I looked where he was looking.
'What is it Zorro?'
It took me a few moments, scanning the road through the forest and the varying shades of green and brown.
How little we see when we only see what we think is there...
There she was: a doe, standing still as a statue in the middle of the road, about 300 feet in front of us. She blended with the dirt and sandy base and appeared to be as shocked as I had felt. Her stance was similar to Zorro's and I admired their natural keen sense of awareness.
'It's OK Zorro,' I said as I reached up to gently pat his neck, 'I see her too... she's a deer.' I breathed a sigh of relief and smiled. Just then, another doe came hopping out of the woods and flicking her pretty white tail, they both crossed the road and went off into the woods together.
It was in those few moments that followed, that I realized the resident anxiety in my gut, and even though the deer were gone, I could still feel that familiar feeling there.
As we walked on I knew there was more to this than the deer crossing...
The next few moments felt like time stood still. What could I do to relieve this feeling? I know it's the thoughts I think that lead to my experience, and I know that Zorro and I are a direct reflection.
So, why anxiety? What was I thinking that continued to cause this negative emotion? What was it that I really wanted that I was worried may not happen?
And there it was... I didn't want to fall off of Zorro... I wanted to have a nice relaxing ride.
'Whenever you are feeling less than good, if you will stop and say, Nothing is more important than that I feel good-I want to find a reason now to feel good, you will find an improved thought.
Anytime you feel negative emotion, you are in the mode of resisting something that you want, and that resistance takes its toll on you. It takes its toll on your physical body, and it takes its toll on the amount of wonderful things that you are allowing to come into your experience.'
