Welcome to the latest newsletter from The Motor Control Warehouse (MCW).     

 

This issue of our newsletter focuses on double reduction gearbox units and encoders. We will also be taking a look at the Invertek Optidrive PCE, P2, and HVAC inverters.

High Torque, High Precision Systems

Double reduction with encoder

 

We have recently engineered a motor, gearbox and inverter combination which will turn a shaft through 90 degrees and then back again repeatedly. The load on the machine will be high thus the torque on the output shaft needs to be at least 2500Nm, also the speed of the turning mechanism needed to be 1.5rpm, very slow!

Due to the low speed that was needed it was possible with the use of worm reduction gearboxes to obtain the high torque figures from a low powered motor. The combination we came up with was using a 0.55kW TECA 4 pole 3 phase aluminium frame motor with encoder fitted, attached to a FCNDK 63/130 double reduction 1000:1 gear unit being controlled in closed loop by the Control Techniques Unidrive SP1401 0.75kW inverter. 


The encoder will provide feedback to the Unidrive SP allowing it to determine the position of the output shaft and stop it once it has turned through 90 degrees, then reverse it back to the start position.

We also supplied our customer with a custom made output shaft made to their exact specification.

Motor Mounted Feedback Encoders

A look at our new range of hollow shaft motor mounted encoders.

Here at MCW we have used hollow shaft motor mounted encoders in a number of our projects for precise speed, and position feedback in closed loop applications. 

 

We stock a range of encoders from 256 ppr to 8192ppr. The features at a glance for our encoders are:

  • P65 protection
  • -20 to +100 deg C operating temp
  • Max speed 9000 rpm
  • Supply Voltage 5 to 32V dc
  • Current consumption max 40mA without load
  • Standard bore size 15mm
  • Comes with 5m flying lead and connection diagram
  • Output voltage 5V
  • Signals: A, B, Z, A/, B/, Z/

We are now selling the encoders on their own as well as fitted to motors. The encoders we sell have a 15mm hollow shaft, but for smaller motors we are able to provide inserts to take this down to XX mm at no extra cost. Please contact us for more information.

 

When the encoders are fitted we extend the shaft and the cowling of the motor behind the impeller, we also gland the cable out of the cowling. For more information please give us a call.

Invertek Optidrive PCE Motor Mounted Inverter

A look at the features of Invertek's motor mounted Optidrive PCE. 

 PCE

The Invertek Optidrive PCE is a new addition to our range of inverters. This inverter is intended for mounting on the top of a standard three phase AC induction motor to provide integrated motor speed control.

 

The PCE comes as switched or non-switched with an optional EMC filter, and is available as 240V single phase in, 240V three phase out or 400V three phase in, 400V three phase out. The PCE is available as a 0.75 or 1.5kW.

 

The features at a glance for the PCE are as follows:

 

  • High performance integrated motor drive.
  • Sensor less vector control.
  • Up to 200% torque from zero speed.
  • IP55 enclosure protects against dust and fluid ingress.
  • Available with optional keypad or potentiometer.
  • Supplied with universal adaptor plate to suit most motors
  • Frame size 1, L = 228mm,  W = 149mm, D = 100mm.
  • Overload 150% for 60 seconds.
  • Output Frequency up to 500Hz.
  • IP rating IP55.
  • All the usual inputs and outputs available.
  • Operating temperature -10 to 60 deg C.
  • Comes with mounting plate 
  • Keypad needed to program inverter

Invertek Optidrive P2 and HVAC

A focus on Inverteks latest offerings the P2 and HVAC drives that will be added to our website shortly.

 

The all new Optidrive P2 provides 

P2 and HVAC

world leading control for both standard induction motors and permanent magnet motors - open and closed loop. Open loop vector control of standard induction motors provides up to 200% torque from zero speed. Open and closed loop control of the latest generation of high efficiency PM motors. Closed loop encoder feedback capability for standard induction motors. Extensive I/O and communications interface capabilities ensure the drive can be integrated quickly and efficiently into a wide variety of control systems. A simple parameter structure and carefully selected factory settings ensure fast and easy commissioning.

Optidrive HVAC sets a new standard for dedicated fan & pump control. Whilst retaining the ease of use traditionally associated with Invertek Drives, Optidrive HVAC has an innovative design, combined with robust performance to provide powerful flow control and reliability in a compact drive.

  • Highly efficient operation
  • Automatic optimisation when load decreases
  • In-built sleep mode prevents lost energy when flow is lower zero 
  • Simple parameter set allows fast installation and commissioning
