      Cuffs Capture the Moment
 February 2011

 Greetings!

Thoughts of warm weather tantalize us as we head into the muddy season here on the East Coast. So we turn our thoughts to Spring.

Last year, Michelle Obama admirers twittered about her "right to bare arms." Spring means it is time to adorn those arms. And so, this end-of-month Inspired by Design will focus on bracelets, actually, cuffs to be precise.

The current fashion season has many classical style references and many of these cuffs would be the perfect accent for those fabulous Grecian-style Academy Award gowns.

On another note, the CJDG is opening up membership to retailers!
We will be creating a retailer page on the CJDG website that will link to our retailers' websites.

The CJDG website has become an information hub where you can discover designer jewelry and the stories, inspiration and influences behind the pieces. With the addition of retail stores to our website, we will close the circle and give our readers information on where to buy the work that the website describes. Please contact Marylouise for the details!

Please check out our website for member profiles, our TrendWatch articles and much more. You can find archived copies of our Inspired by Design Newsletter here.

If you know someone who would enjoy our newsletter, please forward it on to them.

Many thanks.

Regards,
Jeanne Johngren

Diana Widman Design: Metallic Fabric
Feb2011_Diana_Widman_cuff

A former printmaker and bookbinder, Diana Widman uses fold forming and other metalsmithing techniques to transform metal
into fabric, or perhaps we should say, the semblance of fabric. This Genesis Sparkle bracelet has a silky, subtle texture. Finished with the glimmer of tiny diamonds, the wearer's every gesture will be accentuated.

Emanuela Duca: Cool Molten Texture
Feb2011_Emanuela_Duca_Magma_cuff

Emanuela Duca captures rugged texture and fluid movement in solid form, incorporating elements of earth and water. In her latest collection, Magma, the designs are ruptured, rough and random. Evocative of molten lava, the juxtaposition of coarse, fragmented black metal with smooth 18K gold beads elicits a desire to touch in the beholder.

Gurhan: Ornament and High Style
Gurhan Cuff

Internationally known, Gurhan's work is worn by Hollywood darlings Angelina Jolie and Sandra Bullock. Gurhan derives much of his inspiration from his native Turkey, and his worldwide travels. This cuff, reminiscent of the huge bronze gates on European churches and the antique bronzes of the Byzantine era, is a bold yet classic delight.

Feb2011_Maya_Jewels_cuff

A spectacular piece, this bracelet makes a statement wherever it goes. The brilliant lapis oval surrounded by diamonds, contrasts with the circular onyx creating a timelessly elegant piece. Somers Jewelry: The Complexity of Curves
Somers Bracelet

High polish is what these cuffs will lend any occasion. These cuff bracelets appeal to our sense of touch. Their curvilinear contrasts evoke wind patterns as they are expressed in the contoured outline of moving waves.  At once modern and classic, Somers' work  continues to demonstrate that he is a master of form.

Sydney Lynch: Playful Spring Color
Syndey Lynch Cuff
When Sydney Lynch received a packet of Umba Sapphires and Golden Tourmaline, she loved them as a group and decided to do a major piece using all of them together. The colors, soft hints of spring greens, yellows, and violet play off of each other in a way
that enhances the subtle differences between them. Like pebbles in a stream bed glimmering in the dappled sun.

Tschetter Studio: Falling Gold Leaf
Feb2011_Tschetter_black_leaf_cuff

Patricia Tschetter uses granulation in unexpected ways. Here, a tiny gold granulated leaf floats on a bed of flat black leaves that show off her use of positive and negative space. Strikingly contemporary. And because it is primarily silver, this is a very affordable style.
