The Wanamaker Trophy
|
The
Year of the Trophy
Chinese New Year may declare this the year of the dragon, but at Devon, 2012 is the year of the trophy.
Leonard King, Chairman of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair has long had a dream of collecting all of Devon's trophies to have them photographed. That particular dream was realized last spring when Trophy Committee members, Dick Webster, Joannah Hall Glass and Francis Jacobs worked with Devon photographer Brenda Carpenter to gather and photograph the trophies, more than 170 of them, for the first time in Devon's history.
"Our trophy collection is something that is very unique to Devon," said King, "I can't think of another horse show in the country, possibly even the world, that has such an extensive collection of trophies."
Most of Devon's trophies are silver or bronze, many of them antique and sporting the stamp "Tiffany & Co." on the bottom.
The images of the trophies, both individually and collectively, are striking, so much so that you will see them used extensively throughout Devon 2012. The famed Wanamaker trophy, seen above, will be the central image on the advertising poster this year. Trophies will also be featured on the ticket flyer, the box tickets, and will be this year's official Devon pin.

Devon to Host 2012 U.S. Show Jumping Team Observation Event
Two Classes to be Observation Events
For the first time since 1996, Devon will be part of the qualifying process for the United States Show Jumping team that will compete at the 2012 London Olympics. Devon can expect to see some of the top horse/rider combinations from the selection trials that will take place in Wellington, FL in March.
The competition in Wellington will result in the "long list" of combinations. Those Olympic hopefuls will then compete at two out of four observation events. Other observation events will be held in Del Mar, CA in early May, Lexington, KY in mid-May and Calgary in Canada the second week of June.
The two classes that will be observation events at Devon are the $100,000 Grand Prix of Devon, Thursday, May 31 and the $50,000 Open Jumper Stake, which will feature something not often seen at Devon, a water jump. The Idle Dice Open Jumper Stake will take place late in the afternoon, Saturday, June 2.
"We are delighted to have the opportunity to host an observation event. The show will benefit greatly, but so will the spectators and competitors," said Devon Horse Show and Country Fair Chairman, Leonard King. "The spectators will see many of the top riders and horses in the world vying for a spot on the Olympic team. The competitors will be able to enter an arena filled to capacity with a very large and vocal crowd. This is a great help to any rider/horse combination hoping to one day enter an Olympic stadium with the largest, loudest crowd they've ever encountered."

Another Record Donation Made to Bryn Mawr Hospital
Thanks to the tireless efforts of thousands of Devon Country Fair volunteers, The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair was again able to make a record donation to Bryn Mawr Hospital. On December 9, members of Devon's Board of Directors and the hospita
l community gathered at a reception to present hospital president, Andrea Gilbert, with a check for $402,000.
The donation will be used to fund several pieces of specialized medical equipment from the hospital's highest priority needs list including two Cardiac Catheterization Fast Track holding bays, a pediatric anesthesia monitoring system and a SonoSite ultrasound machine.

The donation to the hospital represents the proceeds of a very successful 2011 Devon Horse Show and Country Fair. Bryn Mawr Hospital has been the beneficiary since 1919. Over the past 30 years, over $14 million dollars has been donated to the hospital, w
hich would amount to over $50 million today when adjusted for inflation.

New Footing in Schooling Area for 2012
In 2010, the Dixon Oval had the state-of-the-art All Weather Competition footing installed to great acclaim by the exhibitors. In 2011, the Gold Ring had the same footing installed. Now, the largest riding surface at Devon, the schooling area, will be done for 2012. The footing is a mix of high quality sand, geo-felt and special fibers that provide a balance of compression and rebound in any weather condition.
"It has always been our intention to install the All Weather Competition footing in all three riding areas," said Horse Show and Country Fair president, Wade McDevitt. "We are fortunate that very successful years in 2010 and 2011 have allowed us to keep an aggressive pace in accomplishing that goal."
The new footing is so meaningful to long time tenant Dressage at Devon that they are contributing to the effort by conducting a capital campaign to help fund the cost of the new footing.
Installing the new footing in the schooling area also affords the opportunity to address drainage and storm water management issues. An underground cistern system will be installed below the schooling area to act a holding system and osmosis remediation system for ground water.
