Our Presidential Past

Coolidge Portrait
Calvin Coolidge

Just about a year before he became our 30th President in 1923, Calvin Coolidge, then Vice President, was a winner at Devon, though not in the usual sense.

According to a May 28, 1922 New York Times article, Mr. Coolidge was at Devon to watch the Corinthian Challenge hunter event.  While visiting the Country Fair, he  laid down a quarter and took a spin at the  "Wheel of Fortune."  When the lucky VP's number came up, he won a box containing 100 cigarettes.

Sixty-one years later, the Surgeon General determined that giving cigarettes to the Vice President of the United States was hazardous to his health.

Devon's Gift to Bryn Mawr Hospital in Action

Last month, we featured an article on the 2010 donation to Bryn Mawr Hospital. This month we thought it would be great to take a look back at the 2009 gift and see just what these annual donations mean to the hospital and its patients.

In 2009, $320,000 raised by Country Fair volunteers was earmarked to fund equipment for the nursery and NICU.  In April of 2010 a new state-of-the-art infant security system was installed. The system is called HUGS and works via a tiny radio transmitter installed on the wrist or ankle band of infant and pediatric patients.  Electronically monitored exit points throughout the hospital detect any unauthorized removal of a patient.  The system also prevents accidental infant/mother mismatching which actually occurs 20,000 times a year in the United States.

Bryn Mawr Hospital's new HUGS security system ensures peace of mind for new parents.
"We're very grateful for the Devon Horse Show's generosity in supporting the needs of our pediatric patients," says Robert Stavis, PhD, MD, Chairman of Pediatrics and Clinical Director of the NICU at Bryn Mawr Hospital. "This system gives parents and staff great comfort knowing that babies are safe in Bryn Mawr Hospital."
