Helen Hope Montgomery Scott |
Helen Hope Montgomery Scott was born in 1904 to a wealthy Philadelphia family. Mrs. Scott is perhaps best know as the inspiration for the character of Tracy Lord in Philip Barry's play, and the movie of the same name, "The Philadelphia Story." At her debut in 1922, she received four marriage proposals. She refused them all and in 1923 married Egdar Scott, an investment banker and heir to a railroad fortune. The couple entertained lavishly at the family's storied Main Line estate, Ardrossan, and rubbed elbows with such notables as Katharine Hepburn, Averill Harriman and Cole Porter, Joshephine Baker, Winston Churchill and the Duke of Windsor.

While Hope Montgomery Scott may have been the original "it" girl, here at Devon, she is known as a life long horsewoman and one of the driving forces behind the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair.

Mrs. Scott began riding as a child of four and continued to both show and hunt throughout her life. After World War II, she was elected the Chairman and Executive Director of the Devon Horse Show and remained so until her death in 1996 at the age of 90. Mrs. Scott was the heart and soul of Devon for over 40 years and her legacy at Devon remains strong to this day. Accomplishments of her tenure can be found throughout the grounds, and the "Helen Hope Mongomery Scott Perpetual Trophy" is awarded each year in honor of the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair Volunteer of the Year.
