Greetings!

There is something about the sunlight in fall.  As the sun makes its way southward the shadows become longer and the harshness of the summer sun gives way to a softer and gentler light.  The leaves follow their ancient traditions of changing color and windblown acrobatics, and we as Americans are reminded that we need to give thanks for the immeasurable blessings that have been heaped upon our country.  I am thankful for so many things; my family, my employees, my friends, my clients and most importantly my God.  Through Him all things are possible and I can bear witness that those words are true.  No matter what you believe in your heart, fall reminds us that all the summers of our lives will give way to the fall.  Give thanks that we are blessed to live in such a great country, where we have the freedom to believe as our hearts lead, and where our forefathers fought and died so we can enjoy the fruits and bounty of their sacrifice.  Thank you Lord for all of these things and may God Bless America!

Regards,

Self-reflection. Goal setting. History. Fried chicken. Love songs.  What do all these words have in common? Incredibly, they describe the
J. Bryant Boyd, Architect office retreat; our time to evaluate the business and goals of the company and staff.

While the agenda focused on routine items like budgeting and future planning, the venue for the event was far from ordinary. We stayed at the LBJ Ranch in Stonewall, Texas.  The house was spitting distance from the Texas White House and the view out the back windows included the presidential jet.  Surrounded by such history was motivating and inspiring - and let's face it, just downright fun.

We were productive. We reviewed our jobs from the past two years - and learned a lot about ourselves and our procedures in the process. What we are very good at. What we can improve on. Learning from experience leads to self-improvement.

We were proactive. We look to the future of the company. How do we grow. How do we expand. How do we better ourselves as a company and as individuals.

We were positive.  We focused much of our evaluation and set our sights using the principals of Dave Ramsey. Those include common sense thought and evaluation, establishing and adhering to an old-fashioned work ethic and above all keeping all you do faith-based.

We were playful. We are open and honest with one another - one big happy family, you could say. Taking a break to restore our spirits we took a guided tour of the Texas White House lead by a good-natured and story-filled park ranger. And we eat. Oh my, we eat. Of special significance was dinner prepared by our girl Tuesday, Bryant's mom, Vicky. Let me tell you, she can cook fried chicken - bar none. And we sang love songs around a campfire. Here is a bit of trivia about Bryant ... his favorite traveling game is taking turns singing a song with the word 'love' in it. Not as easy as it sounds after the first few rounds. Try it - you'll be amazed how difficult it is (and how much fun).

But the best part of our bit of time together was the realization of what a tremendous future we have at J. Bryant Boyd, Architect. Our accomplishments are merely the tip of the iceberg. Where we can go. How we can grow. What we can do. Whom we can serve. Why we are here. The world is ours to inspire and be inspired by. We thank you for the opportunity to serve. And to learn.

It's Time to be Thankful
November/December 2001

November and December are traditionally the months when we tend to think more about family and friends and what they mean to us. This year however we all have been thinking more about people that were complete strangers to us, but now seem like family.  Our lives have been touched by pictures of suffering and grief that grip our hearts and minds.  We have been reminded of what life really is all about and how very fragile and precious it is.  It is sad to think that it took a terrible tragedy to remind us how much we take for granted each day.  Yet out of all the tears and pain good has come.  We open our hearts and our pocketbooks to help strangers in need. We are more forgiving, patient and hopefully less judgmental than we were before our day of awakening. We are telling each other more openly 'I love you' and really meaning it. Will this better way of relating to each other last? Can we remember to pray for each other and then do our part to be a blessing to their lives?  Are we honest enough and brave enough to ask God to show us where we are wrong and what we should do to be the person we should be? Can we put aside petty differences of opinions and look for the good in each other? Can we keep this feeling of what is really of worth and not slip back into taking for granted the many, many blessings what have been given to us. I hope so. Because if we do we will be better people and collectively a better nation.

We are thankful for the way that God has blessed our business and has brought us many new friends and opportunities to serve others in this way.  We thank you for your friendship, your business and your trust in us.  We hope that this holiday season will be the most memorable one yet to you and your family, not because of good food or great gifts, but simply because you have your life and the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others.
