Dear BBB Accredited Business,

With so much attention focused on the flooding of the Mississippi River, the spillways, and areas that will be flooded, we present some information on the scams that rise with the flood waters, and don't go away when the water does. Hopefully, this article will help people avoid the inappropriate charities and scam contractors that surface so often after disaster strikes. 

Also, in more everyday advice, we present information on making arrangements with a lawn care service. One of the most important things in dealing with any contractor is making sure all expectations are clearly outlined in the contract. We also present some tips on identifying phony checks and the technical aspects of bogus checks.

Beware of Scams , Hidden Dangers, As Flood Waters Rise, then Recede, BBB Advises 

 

As Southeast Louisiana experiences the flooding that many other areas have already experienced, the BBB warns of potential upcoming dangers to be aware of. Scammers are often quick to move into devestated areas. Fly-by-night contractors may offer "deals" to those desperate to repair damaged homes and businesses, then fail to carry out the work. Fake charities may spring up to take advantage of the sympathy people feel for victims of the disasters.

hand writing a checkCon artists are good at making fake checks. Just ask the thousands and thousands of people who have been scammed. Remember, consumers who cash phony checks are responsible for the money those fraudulent checks represent.

BBB Advises Consumers to Set Clear Expectations When Hiring a Lawn Service

 

Hiring a lawn service can ease the burdens of caring for your yard. To avoid headaches or misunderstandings, BBB advises consumers to make sure you and the lawn service have clear, written expectations for what the company will provide for the agreed-upon fees.

BBB Mentioned on NBC Dateline, "The Hansen Files"

The NBC Dateline episode on Sunday, May 15, 2010 featured reporter Chris Hansen, who wired an undercover homeowner's home in an effort to investigate the quality of service calls from home repairmen. There were several competent, honest repairmen, but issues ranging from overcharging for unnecesary work, to simply poor diagnosis were addressed.
