Dear BBB Accredited Business,

November is half over, and the heaviest retail shopping season of the year is in full swing. Since all businesses are also consumers themselves, and are actively made up of consumers, we encourage our Accredited Businesses to read and share the following articles with their employees regarding being safe and making wise decisions while spending money this season.

Also, the FTC has recently passed amendments to the Telemarketing Sales Rule which prohibits advance fees before providing services such as debt settlement or debt reduction. It also offers several other protections. More information is available in the article.

With Thanksgiving upon us, we wanted to thank all of our Accredited Businesses for their support and their voluntary participation. As our gesture of thanks, please read how to properly show off your BBB Accreditation in the article below, and feel free to contact us with any questions.

'Tis the Season for Holiday Scams

holiday shopping onlineOver the holidays, consumers can fall victim to identity thieves, hackers and deceptive merchants online. The Better Business Bureau is warning holiday shoppers and donors to look out for five common scams this season.

Don't fall for these five holiday scams!

New FTC Regulations Protect Consumers from Debt Relief Companies

The Federal Trade Commission recently announced amendments to the Telemarketing Sales Rule which will prohibit for-profit companies that sell debt relief services over the phone from collecting any advanced fees prior to settling or reducing debt. These new regulations offer consumers additional protections when trying to reduce credit card or other unsecured debt.

How To Get a Temporary Job Over the Holidays

Many job hunters will get an early present this year as retailers are increasing the number of hires for the holiday season. Competition for these jobs will likely be fierce, and the Better Business Bureau recommends applying early and taking steps to put your best foot forward.

BBB Encourages Proper Use of BBB Accredited Business Logo

small logo cluster

The Better Business Bureau serving Southeast Louisiana wants to encourage Accredited Businesses to use the BBB Accredited Business logo, but properly. Many BBB Accredited Businesses are still using the outdated CARE logo, or incorrectly using just the BBB torch. We want businesses to use the most correct logo in the best possible ways. When used improperly, it could cause confusion, misunderstanding, or even mistrust.  Proper use of the BBB Accredited Business logo distinguishes your business from your competitor by demonstrating your commitment to truth in advertising, assurance that your business will stand behind its product or work, and a commitment to supporting the BBB's work of advancing trust in the marketplace.

Be Sure When You Spend

The BBB serving Southeast Louisiana reminds you that during this time of the year, and all times of the year to remember some key principles that will help you when shopping.

  • BE SURE of the price you pay.  Prices may fluctuate during the holiday season.  Don't be upset when you find a better price after you buy.  Checking prices ahead of time allows you to be confident when you buy.
  • BE SURE of the company's return or exchange policy.  Policies are different from store to store. One may have a strict "No refunds or exchanges" while another may have a much more forgiving policy.  It's better to know up front.
  • BE SURE to understand all terms when buying gift cards including any stipulations as to when and how they can be used, expiration dates, and penalties for non-use.
  • BE SURE to understand any terms of a layaway program beforehand, if you choose to use one.
  • BE SURE of the trustworthiness of your online retailer.  Use the company's name or web address to check BBB.org for a Reliability Report.  If you feel uneasy, attempt to contact the company beforehand by phone or e-mail.  If you have trouble beforehand, you may have similar trouble if a problem arises afterward.
