Welcome to the first Better Business Bureau Bulletin of 2010. This month, the BBB will look back at the most prominent scams and rip-offs of 2009. Also, in the interest of looking forward, we will issue 10 New Year's Resolutions on becoming a smarter consumer.
Many of the past year's scams capitalized on high-profile headlines, and 2010 does not appear to be any different. 2010 is a U.S. Census year, and the often-misunderstood Census has already attracted it's share of scams. Also, major disasters such as the Haitian Earthquake on January 12, 2009, bring out the best intentions in donors, but frequently brings out the worst in scammers. We present an article on how to make sure your donations do the most good.

BBB Lists Top 10 Scams & Rip-Offs of 2009
Better Business Bureau today
released a list of the top 10 scams and rip-offs of 2009. Not
surprisingly, many scams sought to take advantage of people who were
suffering under tough economic circumstances-such as the unemployed.
Additionally, the use of free-trial offers to lock consumers into
recurring credit and debit card charges was widespread online.

The New Year is here and, because of the rough economy, it's more
important that ever to resolve to be a savvy consumer. Better Business

BBB Advises Donors on How to Vet Haiti Earthquake Appeals
As immediate relief needs are assessed in the wake of the devastating
earthquake in Haiti on January 12th, many Americans are looking for
ways to help by donating to a charity. The Better Business Bureau Wise
Giving Alliance warns that fraudulent charities as well as poorly administered, or ill-equipped organizations may emerge to solicit donations from well-meaning Americans. Do your research to make sure that your dollar will be of the greatest assistance.

An e-mail which falsely claims to be from the Better Business Bureau
about the upcoming 2010 Census is inaccurate and BBB is advising
consumers to get the facts.
