A Patchwork of Kansas Stories
How do we hold on to our heritage? What stories, objects, and traditions link us to our past? For many Kansas communities, memory keepers - often women - preserve the language and customs of the past for new generations.
She Told Me Stories is a new film showcasing the multicultural stories of Kansas through the women who have kept these memories alive. The film features stories of immigration and cultural heritage in Garden City, Topeka, Alma, Clay Center, and Westmoreland. From stories to artifacts, the film documents these local historians' contributions to the cultural fabric of Kansas.
She Told Me Stories premieres on Sunday, December 18 at 1:30 p.m. at the Marlo Cuevas Balandran Activity Center, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, in Topeka. Audience members are invited to participate in memory keeping by bringing a personal or family artifact and recording an interview about its history. More information about the event can be found here.
The film and event are sponsored by the Women's Studies Program at Kansas State University with the support of a KHC Humanities grant.
