Sunflower Journeys
Residents of St. Benedict in Nemaha County awoke
to the sounds of cannon shots on the morning of November 14, 1894. The cannons signaled a special occasion: It was the dedication day for St. Mary's Catholic Church. By eight o'clock, hundreds gathered at the church as the sounds of St. Benedict's brass band rang through the air. A High Mass - with sermons in German and English - was followed by a large dinner, fireworks, and dancing until midnight. Seneca's Courier-Democrat newspaper reported that "all went home rejoicing that they had taken part in the greatest festival ever witnessed in Nemaha Co."
 St. Mary's Church will be one of three Kansas stories featured on an upcoming episode of Sunflower Journeys.
Since 1987, Sunflower Journeys has showcased Kansas people, places, and culture.
