Sunflower Journeys
St. Mary's Church
Residents of St. Benedict in Nemaha County awoke
to the sounds of cannon shots on the morning of
November 14, 1894.  The cannons signaled a special occasion:  It was the dedication day for St. Mary's Catholic Church.  By eight o'clock,  hundreds gathered at the church as the sounds of St. Benedict's brass band rang through the air.  A High Mass - with sermons in German and English - was followed by a large dinner, fireworks, and dancing until midnight.  Seneca's Courier-Democrat newspaper reported that "all went home rejoicing that they had taken part in the greatest festival ever witnessed in Nemaha Co."

Sunflower JourneysSt. Mary's Church will be one of three Kansas stories featured on an upcoming episode of Sunflower Journeys.

Since 1987, Sunflower Journeys has showcased Kansas people, places, and culture.  According to the KTWU Public Television website:  Bolstered by the ongoing support of the Kansas Humanities Council, the series draws upon the expertise of local scholars to provide thoughtful explorations of the state and its social, cultural and natural resources.

Sunflower Journeys broadcasts on public television stations across the state.  Visit the Sunflower Journeys website for the current season's schedule and broadcast stations and times.

The Essential Eisenhower

Kansas Historical Society.

Dwight D. Eisenhower never forgot his Kansas roots or the lessons he learned in his hometown of Abilene.  How important was Eisenhower's Kansas heritage in the overall measure of this great American hero?  Daniel D. Holt's  presentation at the Ulrich Museum of Art in Wichita on November 17 focuses on the odyssey of a soldier from a young man wondering where the railroad tracks behind his house led, to becoming an international statesman.

The Essential Eisenhower is one of over 70 Kansas-themed presentations available in KHC's  Statehood Speakers Bureau catalog.
