  • Beyond Diversity: Inclusiveness in the Legal Profession, CCIE's how-to manual for legal organizations working to create cultures of inclusion will be the focus of two upcoming articles.  Be sure to read  the March issues of The Colorado Lawyer and The Docket to learn how this first-of-its-kind manual will be changing the legal landscape.

CCIE Partners with Goodwill

CCIE is partnering with Goodwill Industries of Denver to recruit employers for internships for high school students interested in pursuing the law.  Hiring a Goodwill intern is a way to create a diverse pipeline of talent into the legal profession.  Students are pre-screened and managed by Goodwill and many students are bilingual.  Click here to see more information and to download the flyer.  Interested employers should sign up by April 1 by e-mailing Alison Yeager or calling her at 303.650.7714.

ABA: The Recession Is Undermining Diversity Initiatives

An American Bar Association report, "Diversity in the Legal Profession: The Next Step," confirms concerns expressed by diversity advocates since the economic recession began: spending on law firm diversity initiatives has been impacted and layoffs are undoing all of the gains the profession has made in increasing diversity.

The report offers no hard numbers on spending cuts for diversity initiatives but does declare that "the recession is drying up monies for diversity initiatives and creating downsizing and cutbacks that may disproportionately and negatively affect lawyer diversity - thereby undoing the gains of past decades."

It is the result of a year-long study that included surveys, regional hearings, roundtable discussions and a diversity summit held in June that drew 200 representatives of law firms, corporate law departments and diversity advocates. The goal was to create a "functional roadmap for advancing diversity in the legal profession," ABA President Carolyn Lamm wrote in the report.

What Women Want: Partnership Details
AmLaw Daily Reports on a Recent NALP Decision

A recent AmLaw Daily article highlights a recent controversial decision by the National Association for Law Placement (NALP). The debate centers around NALP acceding to pressure by member law firms not to capture details about partnership structures - namely, a breakdown of equity versus non-equity partners in their ranks to include in its annual  Directory of Legal Employers

One reason given by the firms is that the distinctions are a matter of firm business and firms aren't obligated to share the information.  However, women and minority lawyers say there should be greater transparency about the number of equity and nonequity partners at law firms.
