CCIE is  planning RMLDSexciting new programs for the annual Rocky Mountain Legal Diversity Summit to be held on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.  This year's conference will feature three strands of workshops focused on: Diversity and Inclusiveness, Balanced Hours Programs, and Diversity Training.  To read more about the conference click here or to register click here.

Sam Cary Scholarship Dinner

On Friday, February 5th, 2010 at 6:00 p.m., the Sam Cary Scholarship Endowment Fund will host its 7th annual fundraising dinner, "Women of Wisdom."  This year's event will feature U.S. Congresswoman SamCaryDiana DeGette as the speaker and will honor attorneys Leslie A. Fields (Faegre & Benson), Barbara J. Welcome Denver Presents "Colorado's Achievement Gap"
A Session about the Value of Education in all Communities

The next quarterly Welcome Denver meeting and reception will focus on the value of education in all communities to our future workforce and citizens.  The session will be February 23, 2010 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, followed by a reception until 7:00 pm at the Integer Group, 7425 West Alaska Drive, Lakewood.  The cost is $50.
 

Gloria Neal will lead a continuation of the dialogue that she started with her multi-part CBS 4 series "Being Black at 5280".  Gloria's research involved the growing achievement gap between students of color and Caucasian students in Colorado schools.

Smart Soloing: Success Strategies for Diverse Lawyers

The American Bar Association is presenting a webinar on Friday, February 5, 2010, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. MST which is designed to help the recent solo/small firm lawyer build the skills to operate a successful law practice, and to candidly address some of the barriers and opportunities faced by diverse lawyers.  To learn more or to register, click here

CCIE's Retention Initiative Offers Unique Opportunities for Associates

Several diverse law firm associates from firms participating in CCIE's Retention Initative recently had lunch with Qwest General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer, Rich Baer.  The lunch, hosted by Holland RetentionLuncheon& Hart, offered the opportunity for the associates to ask questions about business  development and building client relationships.  A subsequent lunch will be offered on April 14th at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck  for additional associates to meet with General Counsel of Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Steve Smith.  To learn more, please contact Kathleen Nalty.
 
Association of Corporate Counsel CLE a Success
 
CCIE partnered with the Association of Corporate Counsel - Colorado Chapter to present a CLE on January 20th about CCIE's inclusiveness pilot program and Retention Initiative.  Lockheed Martin Space Systems General Counsel Stephen Smith spoke about his participation in the Retention Initiative and a series of workshops hosted by CCIE in September with GCs from Qwest, Xcel, United Launch Alliance, Miller Coors, and Red Robin. 
 
The workshops included diverse associates and managing partners at Steve Smith, Kathleen Nalty, Bruce JamesCCIE member firms.  Some of the more salient issues included mentorship and flexibility.  Associates would like to have more senior diverse attorneys as role models and more mentoring.  They also seek more flexibility in their schedules.  
 
 
Bruce James, Managing Partner of Brownstein Hyatt Farber & Schreck LLP, the sponsor for the CLE program, spoke about his firm's pioneering work as part of CCIE's Inclusiveness Network - the group of 10 law firms, corporate legal departments, and government law offices piloting CCIE's inclusiveness program (see the complete list of the pilot organizations at the left).

Legal Community Impacts Pipeline at State High School  Diversity Conference

Monica Marquez & Stephanie BoyettThe Colorado Pledge to Diversity Legal Group continued its support for the 17th Annual Cherry Creek Diversity Conference, on Saturday, January 30, 2010, by sponsoring the conference and awarding a $500 scholarship to CeCe Holm from Mullen High School, a co-chair of the conference.

Work Place Bias Dream TeamOne of CCIE's Dream Teams, headed by Colorado Supreme Court Justice Alex Martinez, conducted two workshops on workplace bias for some of the more than 1000 high school students attending the conference from 90 high schools across the state.
