CCIE invites you to join one of its working groups or committees to help transform the legal community in Colorado. Law students, attorneys, and legal professionals are all welcome. To join any of these groups, please contact Kathleen Nalty.
  • Marketing & Fundraising Committee - One of the most important committees that helps sustain CCIE's efforts and promote its mission.
  • Education Committee - Devise and plan events, including CLEs, the Rocky Mountain Legal Diversity Summit, and the Inclusive Excellence Leadership Series at the law schools.
  • Retention Working Group - Brings together associates, managing partners and general counsel and helps develop strategies to implement within legal organizations that will assist in retaining diverse attorneys.
  • Recruiting Working Group - Work with Colorado's legal organizations to increase recruitment of diverse attorneys and law students.  
  • Pipeline Working Group - Help mobilize the legal community to inspire the next generation of diverse students to consider a legal career.

LGBT Rights CLE  

free CLE program on LGBT Rights with Morris Price, Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado, will be held on December 2, 2009. CCIE is co-hosting the event with APABA, CHBA, SABA, CoGLBT Bar, the GLBT Center and DU Law School. The program, "The Changing Legal Landscape of LGBT Rights and Its Impact on Colorado Communities," will address the recent legislative changes in the area of GLBT rights and the implications of laws for all Coloradans. GLBT Dinner Honors Award Winners

GLBT Awards DinnerThe 6th Annual Awards Dinner hosted by the Colorado GLBT Bar Association took place on November 5th. Deputy Attorney General Monica Marquez was honored as this year's Outstanding Attorney and Brandi Lynn Nieto and Robb Miller, both from the Weld County District Attorny's Office, were honored as Outstanding Allies. The evening's featured speaker was Commander Dave O'Malley, the retired Police Chief of Laramie, Wyoming who was in charge of investigating Matthew Shepard's murder in 1998. GLBT Dinner 3  GLBT Awards Dinner

 DU Law Trains Leaders of Inclusive Excellence 

The second session of CCIE's year-long Inclusive Excellence Leadership Series for DU law students- Training for the 21st Century- was held on November 10th and featured Dr. Jesus Trevino, Associate Provost, DU Center for Multicultural Excellence. The next session is scheduled for January 12, 2010 and will focus in generational diversity. Contact Patty Powell, CCIE Board Member and IELS Coordinator, for more information.
DUDL's Second Tournament 
 
The Baker Hostetler Debate Classic, the Denver Urban Debate League's second tournament of the school year, was a two-day event on November 20th-21st at Thomas Jefferson High School. The Denver Post was in attendance to interview students and take photgraphs for a feature article that appeared on the front page of the paper. The next tournament is December 11-12 at West High School and volunteers judges are still needed. Training is provided for all volunteers and no previous judging experience is required. CCIE is already hard at work planning exciting new programs for the 3rd Annual Rocky Mountain Legal Diversity Summit to be held on March 16, 2010 at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. Sponsorship opportunities and registration information will be available soon!

Elimination of Bias CLE Now Available

The ABA is offering a CLE titled, "The Assumption of Justice: A Dialogue on Color, Ethnicity and the Courts," which will assist practitioners in understanding institutional racism. For more information and to order, click here.  

Corporate Counsel Keeping Tabs On Diversity

In an article published by Law 360, corporate counsel from Accenture, Mercedes-Benz, Walmart, Target, and DuPont, among others, spoke at the MCCA's 10th Annual Creating Pathways to Diversity Conference about thier intention to closely monitor diversity in the legal profession, despite the economic downturn. Gender Parity a Long Way Off

An article in New York Law Journal warns that the legal community cannot celebrate the gains that women have made without also remembering that there is still a significant gender disparity in partnership ranks. Issues like work-life balance, stereotypes, and under-representation of women in firm leadership positions are just some of the issues that still require progress. Read the entire article here.
