Greetings! 

 

This month we have National Back Pain Awareness week, Breast Cancer Awareness week and Halloween. Cool! 

Well, last week I gave you a simple exercise for stretching your piriformis so that you can enjoy your favorite activity without pain, and today's exercise will help keep you from cramping up on those days that you have to sit for long periods. That'll cover back pain, we'll talk about breasts next week, and Halloween humor is at the bottom of the page!

 

The most important thing we can do for ourselves as women, to prevent not only breast cancer, but heart disease as well, is to take care of ourselves. Self-care is a top priority because you can't take care of others if you don't take care of yourself first, yet so often "me" falls to the bottom of our to-do list. 

The holidays are coming soon though, so by request, and to help you remain on top of your game, I'm bringing my Acu-Yoga for Total Wellness program to both Virginia and the Berkshires. My one day workshop in Alexandria, VA. is listed below, with links and phone numbers for registration. 

The program in the Berkshires is a four session series on Monday and Thursday evenings. We'll start on Monday Nov. 5th from 5:30 - 6:45pm and continue until Thursday Nov. 15th.

When You Have To Sit For Long Periods

One problem with our fast paced society is that we sit too much. We're in front of a computer all day, or on the telephone, or in meetings, yet our body just wants to get up and move!

There are many easy ways to stretch while sitting, we simply have to remember to do them! Here's an example from my Amazon international bestselling book "STOP Back Pain - Kiss Your Back, Neck and Sciatic Nerve Pain Goodbye!" It will help you stretch and make you more comfortable so you can keep on biking, running, and playing your favorite games well into your "Golden Years!" And you'll enjoy that long meeting more, or at least not have a pain in your butt while listening to your boss drone on...

 

Sitting Pigeon

Sitting Pigeon is a modified Sleeping Pigeon that can be done while sitting in a chair or any time that you can't or don't want to get down on the floor. It can be done easily while sitting in a meeting or working at your desk.

  • First, sit tall in your chair and relax your shoulders.
  • Then rest your right ankle over your left thigh. Make sure you don't have the ankle resting on your knee.
  • Now, take hold of the seat of your chair with both hands and lean forward with a flat back. You'll feel the stretch in your right hip, thigh and buttocks.
  • Breathe deeply for one to two minutes and then switch legs.

 

This is especially recommended for times when you have to sit in long meetings. It will help keep those muscles stretched so that they don't tense up on you. Repeat every hour.
