Greetings! 

 

It's only the beginning of October and I've been pranked already! By critters, that is...

The other night I heard footsteps out on my porch and then a big crash! When I looked out, this is what I found...

 

My small table, and the lantern that was on top of it, were down. 

You have to understand, I live at the very end of a dead end dirt road in the country, with only one other year round resident on the street, and no children anywhere in the neighborhood! It's so quiet here, that, in summer with the windows open, I can hear the footsteps of someone walking down the street. 

Although I did not see who knocked over the table, I suspect the racoons were hoping that the lantern was something they could eat, but when they checked it out, everything came crashing down and they skedaddled! Anyway, it was an interesting evening; a little excitement to start the month of Halloween out properly!

 

October also happens to have an entire week designated as Back Pain Awareness Week, so I will be sharing some of my top back pain prevention techniques and exercises with you this month.

 

In today's article, I'll explain some of the activities that aggravate back pain and how to enjoy those activities without that dreaded sciatic nerve pain!

To Bike or Not To Bike...  

If you've ever asked yourself that question because of back pain, read on!

 

Running, biking, kick boxing and tennis are the most common Baby Boomer activities that can give you a real pain in the butt. All of these fun sports shorten the muscles surrounding your sciatic nerve; so if you play often, but don't stretch, you'll feel the pain.

 

Just the other day, one of my clients told me that it couldn't possibly be her mad, mad biking that's causing her butt and leg pain because she's been biking for years. When I asked her if she stretched before or after she got on the bike, she responded: "I just jump on and go!" Well, that may have worked when she was 20 years old, but now that she's a full fledged member of the Baby Boomer generation, she has to treat her body better if she wants it to function properly. Years and years of not stretching have not helped, the pain simply took it's time showing up, sort of like my daughter, Loretta "fashionably late," as she likes to refer to it.

 

Most runners know that you need to stretch the hamstrings after running, but the piriformis can also be a big pain in your butt (pun intended). The piriformis stretches from your hip to your tailbone and when it gets tight it pulls one toward the other, throwing your whole pelvic area out of whack - Ouch! Simply stretching both before and after your exercise will keep your muscles healthy and flexible, and, most importantly, stop your pain. Stretching after you exercise is even more important because you need to stretch and relax the muscles that have just been tightened; those muscles and joints are thoroughly warmed up now, making the stretching easier, and reducing the chance of straining. Yes Martha, you can even injure yourself by stretching too enthusiastically!  

 

 Here's a good stretch for your piriformis:

  

"Through the Hole" is an easy-to-do exercise that stretches all of the muscles around your hip, lower back and buttocks.

  • Lie on the floor, on your back, with knees bent and your feet flat, about hip distance apart.
  • Cross your right ankle over your left thigh, and bring your left leg up off the floor,
  • Now reach through the hole between your legs with your right arm and reach around the back of your left leg with your left arm until your hands can clasp and gently pull your legs closer to your body.
  • Check to make sure that your head is still on the floor and your neck is not arched. Tuck your chin in toward your chest a little to straighten out your neck, or place a small pillow under your head.
  • Breathe deeply for one to two minutes while gently stretching, then slowly lower your leg and uncross.
  • Repeat with the opposite leg.

Note: Make sure that your ankle is not resting on your knee. Place it on your thigh or on your shin, but keep it off the knee.

Remember to stretch gently. Pull your leg only as far as you can without pain. A little discomfort is okay, but not pain.
